Commons categories and descriptions

[edit]

Commons categories require descriptions describing the category, and should not be simply a blank page. See Category:Chiang Wei-kuo for another example. Since Commons does not exist to only serve one language Wikipedia, multiple language descriptions are used in the majority of cases. There is a drop-down box for language that is usually set by default to the language where the reader is directed from on their local Wikipedia, which means readers don't usually see the whole bunch of languages, unless they click the drop-down box and select "Show all". -- 李博杰  Talk contribs 03:27, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see all the languages, they occupy the whole page and a person who doesn't understand he needs to scroll down will never find them. Also, many entries are incorrect. --Moscow Connection (talk) 22:32, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to fight against you, but the list is just awful. Many translations don't look right and the whole list looks rather untidy. You uploaded so many pictures, but now no one will see them. And the list is useless anyway. (At least, let's leave 10 languages or so.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 22:42, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You have your browser automatically set to default to "Show all", it's stored as a browser cookie. (As far as I know, it's not an account setting, because it applies for all viewers, anonymous IPs as well.) When someone visits Commons for the very first time, if they follow a link from the English Wikipedia the page by default looks like this, and when they follow a link from the Chinese Wikipedia it looks like this. This problem would essentially only affect long-term Commons contributors/editors, and not the bulk of visitors who follow links to this Commons category from Wikipedia projects. -- 李博杰  Talk contribs 05:13, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have nothing stored as a cookie cause I delete cookies regularly. I've just tried to follow links from different languages, but I still see all the languages in the list. And yes, Chrome shows the language option, but it is automatically set to "Show all". Let's delete the list, it's useless and I'm sure it makes it very difficult for most people to find the pictures. --Moscow Connection (talk) 06:25, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And the list is very ugly, too. :) It looks like a collection of first sentences from different languages + several Google-translated entries. The category has several thousand views per day. Please delete it as soon as possible. --Moscow Connection (talk) 06:30, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I will detlete it now. It is just too terrble, believe me. But feel free to revert if you don't want to listen to a voice of reason. :) --Moscow Connection (talk) 06:35, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK. -- 李博杰  Talk contribs 06:51, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for not reverting. :) It's better like this. And sorry for not waiting for your reply. I didn't visit the Commons often but this list really shocked me every time. --Moscow Connection (talk) 10:57, 31 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
