Tip: Categorizing images

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Lycaon picture adjusted

Dear Michael, I've uploaded an adjusted version if your picture

but I think that, unfortunately, the picture was overexposed in some areas in some colour channels and as a JPEG it's only correctable to a limited extent. Though it takes more storage space and time, I've come to prefer shooting in RAW to make it easier to fix this sort of problem afterwards. Dear Peripitus, thank you very much for your alternate image File:Lycaon pictus running - adjusted.jpg. I love it. I think, I should make images in RAW, I will try to work with them in the next time. I tried to make an color balanced image with Adobe Photoshop CS2 from the File:Lycaon pictus (Temminck, 1820).jpg. It took a lot of time, but I learned to find a way to a color balanced image. My image is colder in the colours than yours and probably not so sharp. Did you make good experience with GIMP 2.4.6? Have a nice summer time! --Michael Gäbler (talk) 01:00, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Most welcome, pleasure to help. I think the problem is that the image is mostly green (grass) and red (the wonderful creature) with little blue. The camera's software in cases like this gets the colour balance wrong. I like GIMP as it is free ! (no $) but it is similar to adobe Photoshop CS2 with mostly the same options. Now for RAW processing I use Bibble which is unfortunately not free but has easy tools to fix colour balance, sharpness, rotation, cropping and other things....the next version is promised to be better and I am hopeful. I find in CS2 and GIMP the best tool to adjust colour is "curves". It takes some practice but the results can be very good - Peripitus (talk) 11:55, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Lakeside of Mono Lake

Hi Michael,

Regarding your excellent photo File:Lakeside_of_Mono_Lake.jpg, I was thinking aloud in FPC discussion that maybe some red needs to be added. You did it, but I think my advise was wrong after all. I started to be interested in this color problem and decided to give it a try. I hope you don't mind me touching your picture, but I was playing around with it this morning and tried different things. Here is my edit with the original:

I ended up boosting middle blues quite a lot and actually lowered the upper reds. I'm not perfectly happy with the result, but at least it is different from the original now. :-) I'm really curious to hear your thoughts about this. Are the colors more natural or is it worse now? It is an interesting problem how to maintain all the brilliant tones of excellent photos like this when transferring it from film to a digital form.

Feel free to use or ignore this edit as you wish. I think the best option would be if you had the time and energy to try similar adjustments to the original scanner raw file.

Hi Matti,

please excuse, I had not enough time in the last days; therefore I will response today. Thank you very much for your interpretion of my image. You took a lot of time to optimize the image. It shows the light of the midday sun on the lakeside of Mono Lake at lunchtime. I think, if you take an own image at this time on this place you will make even this image. The dominating colour is blue. The blue sky is reflekted from the water and changes the other colours and is dominant and powerfull.

Ten years ago I wanted to get the original colours of the place without blue cast in the other colours. I took the ancillary lens „HTMC KR 3 (81 C)“ to remove the blue cast of the midday time and to remove the colour fault of the slidefilm Kodachrome 25. I also wanted to show the colourful stones on the ground of the Mono Lake under the reflecting surface of the lake in their own colours. Therefore I used a circular polarize filter to take off the reflections on the water.

This is the reason for the different colours in both images. Your powerfull image is ok, it shows the light of the midday sun at the Lake. I think, my colourfull image is also ok, it shows the real colours without the blue cast of the midday time. But what image shall I show in Wikimedia? There is a reason for your image. We live in the north of Europe and have only a few sunny weeks. Therefore we prefer sunny days with blue sky and we ignore the blue cast in the sunlight. There is also a reason for my image. The view into the water to the colourful stones in my image has a three dimensional feeling. In this case I kept my own image. But it has been too dark. I made it now a little bit light-coloured to show the sun of the south. By the way: I like the Tufa columns on the lakeside of Mono Lake. They remembers me on images of Max Ernst like this. Max Ernst lived in the United States during the World War II.

Hi, thank you for sharing with me some details of this image. It was very interesting to know. The first impression when I saw this image was the nice transparency of the water. I didn't thought about filters then since I personally don't own any (yet). But of course, polarizer explains that. Great work.

About the colors, it was really interesting to read your analysis about north europeans preferring bluer sunny days. You are most probably right. The thing I was particularly happy with with my edit was the blue sky, but I wasn't happy with the blue cast on the flora. Your explanation makes a lot of sense also regarding this. The flora in your latest version gives nicely the impression of a very hot summer day - my version feels like a really cold day. :-) I'm actually at the moment reading a thick 1970's book about color photography - let's see if it discusses also different cultural preferences. I just started it.

After this interesting discussion and your midtone lightening I decided to support your FP nomination.

I'm a scholar working with flood imagery in the 18th century Netherlands and I'm very interested in a copper engraving association with the Wikipedia page related to the disaster "Christmas Flood of 1717." :File:Christmas flood 1717.jpg Despite the lengthy source information at the bottom of the site, the stated documentary origin of the image is not available (using worldcat or other methods) and I'm curious where the original author of the webpage originally located this image.

I'm a new wikipedia user and I'm not sure if this is the proper channel to find this information. Hopefully, you will be able to direct me to the proper contact if not.

Lieber Michael Gäbler, bitte entschuldigen Sie meine späte Antwort. Bisher kann ich nur mit einem Beweis-Dokument hinsichtlich der Ortsangabe "Sophienstraße" aufwarten (habe ich in Ihren dankeswerten Artikel eingefügt). Die CDV hatte ich mir mal als "Reminder" zugelegt. Derzeit stehe ich allerdings kurz vor dem Abschluss einer ersten Phase zur Erforschung von Karl Friedrich Wunder. Ich kann kaum darstellen, wie zeitintensiv das bisher schon war (zumal gerade mein Haus - meine Mietwohnung - totalsaniert wird). Ich werde jetzt verstärkt auf Giere achten, kann allerdings derzeit nicht konzentriert zum Thema Giere forschen, da ich für mein Phasenmodel zunächst parallel weitere Rechte von anderen Urhebern klären muss. Tieplätze

Hallo Michael Gäbler, vielen Dank für das Anlegen der Kategorien zu Tieplätzen. Ich hatte gehofft, dass es da mal Kategorien geben wird, mich aber nicht getraut, das selbst zu machen. Und jetzt, wo es mal jemand macht, fange ich gleich an zu motzen; bitte verstehe es mehr als Fragen, die mich damals vom Anlegen der Kategorien abgehalten haben:

1. Category:Ties in Lower Saxony: Den Namen finde ich unglücklich gewählt, weiß aber keinen besseren. Problem ist imho ein Sprachliches: Es gibt ja, wenn auch nur als Weiterleitung, auch die Category:Ties, die auf Category:Neckties weiterleitet und etwas doch ziemlich anderes meint.
2. Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Germany (Ties): Nicht jeder (ehemalige) Tieplatz ist als Kulturdenkmal ausgewiesen, weil einige doch ziemlich umgebaut sind und weil wohl auch bei der Inventarisierung teilweise unterschiedliche Maßstäbe angelegt wurden. Man sollte auch überlegen, ob ein ehemaliger Tieplatz, der womöglich auch den entsprechenden Straßennamen trägt, auch dann als Tie einsortiert werden soll, wenn z.B. Steinmauern usw. entfernt wurden und statt der Linden Kastanien da stehen. Ich fände es eigentlich sinnvoll, auch so etwas als Tie zu kategorisieren, auch wenn es nicht denkmalgeschützt ist.
3. Einleitungstext Nds.-Kat: Leider bin ich kein Fachmann, aber ich bilde mir ein, es gebe auch neue Ansiedlungen mit der Endung -hausen. Und wie gesichert sind die Daten? Nach meinem veralteten Stand schlugen sich vor nicht allzu langer Zeit die Historiker noch die Köpfe ein, ob man Ortsnamen überhaupt zeitlich zuordnen kann und wenn ja, wie. Bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts war man ja mit solchen Dateirungen sehr hemmungslos und fängt jetzt mit etwas mehr Forschungsstand wieder etwas vorsichtiger an. Eine so kurz dargestellt Einleitung mit sehr genauer Beschreibung, wie ein Tie aussah und genutzt wurde, welche Orte einen hatten und wann die gegründet wurden, wirkt für mich sehr wie Heimatforschungsliteratur aus dem Ende des 19./Anfang 20. Jahrhundert, die inzwischen überholt ist. Mag sein, dass das nicht stimmt, aber es wirkt so. Ich bin mir nicht einmal sicher, ob Steintreppe, Steintisch usw. notwendigerweise zum Tie dazugehörten oder nur üblich waren (und möglicherweise im Zuge der Romatik bei einigen Ties ergänzt/geändert wurden).
4. File:Tieberg-1827-28.jpg zeigt ja nicht direkt einen Tie, sondern eine Flurkarte. Wieso ist sie unter den Cultural heritage monuments (Ties) einsortiert? Wenn Du was außerhalb Niedersachsens brauchst, hätte ich von meinen Bildern noch den Tie in Eichenberg (Hessen): File:Eichenberg Tie.jpg.

1. Zu Category:Ties in Lower Saxony: Über diese Sprachgleichheit zum Schlips habe ich auch nachgedacht. Aber das Wort Tie ist der wissenschaftliche Name für den Versammlungsplatz der Germanen in den jeweiligen Dörfern, den wir auch in der Kategoriebezeichnung verwenden müssen. Wenn wir neben Tie den Namen von Ländern angeben, dürfte es keine Probleme geben, da es bei dem englischen Wort Tie eine Weiterleitung zur Category:Neckties gibt.
2. Zu Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Germany (Ties): Hier liegt ein grundlegendes Problem für bestimmte Bundesländer. Es gibt beispielsweise keine Listen von Kulturdenkmälern in Niedersachsen. Deshalb wird diese Category bei solchen Ländern bis zur Veröffentlichung einer solchen Liste leer bleiben, da die staatlichen Denkmalsämter für die Benennung von Denkmälern zuständlich ist. Ich behelfe mich darum für Niedersachsen mit der neutral formulierten Category:Ties in Lower Saxony ohne Hinweis auf Cultural heritage monuments (Ich habe dort die Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Germany (Ties) gelöscht.). Wenn Du willst, dann mache auch eine solche Category für Hessen mit Deinem Bild File:Eichenberg Tie.jpg. In eine solche Category kann man auch ties einsortieren, die im Laufe der Geschichte verkleinert oder verändert wurden. Ich finde Deinen Vorschlag gut, sich in dieser Category nicht an die Vorgabe Cultural heritage monuments zu binden. Die Vorgabe Cultural heritage monuments ist keine wissenschaftliche Vorgabe, sondern eine staatliche.
3. Zu Einleitungstext Nds.-Kat: Ich beziehe meine Kenntnisse von dem Tie aus dieser Fachliteratur:
   1. Aktuelle Literaturangaben im Wikipedia-Artikel Thie
   2. Gerhard Meier-Hilbert: Geographische Strukturen: Das natürliche Potential. Seite 33 (pdf Seite 27). Gerhard Meier-Hilbert gibt hier beispielsweise an, dass Ortsnamen mit der Endung -berg im allgemeinen auf eine Ortsgründung vor 300 n. Chr. hinweisen. Wenn Du nach dem Lesen der Monografie "Tie und Anger. Historische Dorfplätze in Niedersachsen, Thüringen, Hessen und Franken" den Eindruck hast, dass meine Angaben nicht präzise sind, dann ändere sie bitte, wie das in Wikipedia und Wikimedia üblich ist. Hier gibt es eine wunderbare Teamarbeit, die ich sehr schätze.
4. Zu File:Tieberg-1827-28.jpg: Dein Einwand ist berechtigt. Ich habe das Bild aus der Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Germany (Ties) herausgenommen.

Es tut mir leid, dass ich mich jetzt erst wieder melde. Vielen Dank für die ausführliche Information. In Niedersachsen gibt es ja Listen der Baudenkmale, wenn auch nicht der Kulturdenkmale; immerhin sind einige Ties als Baudenkmal eingestuft (z.B. Niedernjesa, Waake, Reinhausen, Diemarden, Ischenrode, Ludolfshausen, Rittmarshausen, Weißenborn, um nur mal aus dem südöstlichsten Niedersachsen ein paar zu nennen), sofern denn noch ausreichend erhaltenswertes davon da ist, aber eben nicht alle. Mag sein, dass die nicht mehr ausreichend erhaltenen Ties Bodendenkmale darstellen, aber die entsprechenden Listen sind eben nicht öffentlich. Man muss sie wahrscheinlich einzeln in die Denkmalkategorie setzen. Meinst Du, es ist sinnvoll, die Tie-Kategorie unter Category:Squares in Lower Saxony einzusortieren? Kommt mir zwar auch nicht völlig passend vor, aber vielleicht liegt das an meinem schlechten Englisch, dass ich mir unter "squares" nur schwer einen Tieplatz vorstellen kann. Die Ties können wir nicht unter Category:Squares in Lower Saxony einsortieren, weil diese Kategorie nur für Plätze in Städten bestimmt ist: Ties gibt es nur in Dörfern oder in früheren Dörfern, die durch Eingemeindung zu Stadtteilen geworden sind. Interessant wäre für die Baudenkmäler in Deutschland die Category:Historical monuments in Germany und die Unterkategorie Category:Historical monuments in Lower Saxony. Diese Kategorien bestehen bisher noch nicht. Die Wikipedia-Liste für Niedersachsen ist im Aufbau, aber unvollendet, auch die Primärliteratur ist noch nicht vollständig veröffentlicht. Das war es wahrscheinlich auch, weshalb mir "squares" unpassend schienen: sie sind städtisch, "Platz" ist da weniger festgelegt. Den Vorteil von "historical monuments" sehe ich noch nicht, die "cultural heritage monuments" sollten doch eigentlich alle Kulturdenkmale (ob Bau-, Boden-, Garten-, Industire- oder bewegliches Denkmal) abbilden, sofern es dafür Listen gibt (was ja nur teilweise und überwiegend bei Baudenkmalen der Fall ist, vor allem bei Bodendenkmallisten sind aus gutem Grund oft nicht öffentlich und Listen beweglicher Denkmale gibt es auch nur eingeschränkt. In Niedersachsen bin ich bislang immer nach der Reihe "Baudenkmale in Niedersachsen" gegangen und in Göttingen nach einer 10 Jahre alten Liste des Landesamtes, dort gibt es für die Innenstadt aber im Konzept "Stadtgestalt und Denkmapflege" eine neuere Kartierung, wenn auch bei mir noch nicht als Liste. Aber die Baudenkmallisten sollen ja alle sowieso in die Wikipedia kommen, habe ich gehört. Für Baudenkmale ist es also nur eine Übergangszeit. Für die gab es ja schon mal die Kategorie "listed buildings", was natürlich auch schwierig war wegen der länderspezifisch und erst recht staatenspezifisch divergierenden Kriterien für die Einordnung. Wenn "historical monuments" dazukommen, dann muss ich überlegen, ob ich überhaupt noch versuche, irgendetwas zu kategorisieren. Praktikabel, z.B. für einen WLM-Teilnehmer im Herbst, der nicht monatelang über die Kategorien nachdenken kann, aber schöne Bilder hat, scheint mir das noch nicht. Ich habe aber kein Konzept, wie man es besser machen könnte, weil es einfach von den Vorgaben her nicht durchgehend schlüssig ist. Und dann kommen Objekte wie Ties hinzu, die teilweise heute so degeneriert sind, dass sie offiziell eben nicht als Denkmal eingestuft werden, aber dennoch mal historische Stätten waren. Ich würde sie am liebsten (wie bisher) ähnlich behandeln wie Burgen, deren Kategorien ja auch keine Unterkategorien von Denkmalkategorien sein sollten, weil eben nicht logisch zwingend jede Burg zwangsläufig auch Kulturdenkmal sein muss, obwohl es fast immer so passt. Jeder Tie ist ein dörflicher freier Platz (zumindest gewesen), jeder Tie hat im Mittelalter eine Rolle im gesellschaftlichen Leben gespielt, aber nicht jeder Tie ist zwangsläufig heute (Bau-, Boden-)Denkmal. "Historical monuments" bringt mir da nicht mehr Klarheit, es lässt mich an die französische Einteilung von Kulturdenkmalen denken, ansonsten könnte es in Niedersachsen jenen Teil der Kulturdenkmale bezeichnen, der aus geschichtlichen Gründen unter Schutz gestellt wurde (brauchen wir dann auch Categroy:Scientific monuments in Lower Saxony, Category:Monuments of urban design in Lower Saxony und Category:Monuments of art in Lower Saxony?) --Dehio (talk) 20:22, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

Hallo Michael Gäbler,

in Kürze ist es wieder soweit. Der nun schon traditionelle Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments wird im September zum vierten Mal stattfinden. In ähnlicher Form hatte unlängst der Wettbewerb "Wiki Loves Earth" eine erfolgreiche Premiere. Zu allen bisherigen vier Wettbewerben haben seit 2011 gut 3000 unterschiedliche Teilnehmer (User) ihren Beitrag geleistet. Du warst dabei, und bist auch herzlich eingeladen, am bevorstehenden WLM-Wettbewerb wieder dabei zu sein.

Allein in Deutschland wurden in den letzten drei Jahren im Rahmen von WLM rund 100.000 Fotos zu den insgesamt ca. 850.000 Kulturdenkmalen bundesweit hochgeladen. Jährlich haben sich mehrere Hundert Wiki-Fotographen daran beteiligt. Auch im kommenden Denkmalmonat wird dies gewiss wieder der Fall sein. Der Tag des offenen Denkmals am 14. September bietet bundesweit vielfältige Möglichkeiten, Denkmale nicht nur von außen, sondern auch von innen zu fotografieren. Denkmallisten sind dabei ein wichtiger Orientierungspunkt und zugleich auch Ziel der Einbindung der Fotos. Auch in diesem Jahr sind wieder neue Denkmallisten hinzugekommen, die hilfreich bei der Planung von individuellen oder Gruppen-Fototouren sind und auf eine Bebilderung warten, wie z.B. zu Görlitz oder Zittau. Unter den Landeshauptstädten fehlt nur noch Stuttgart. Aber auch hier ist Licht in Sicht.

In der Mitte Deutschlands hat die Denkmallandschaft der thüringischen Landeshauptstadt Erfurt nun das Licht der Wikipedia-Welt entdeckt. Mehr als 50 Tabellen enthalten 3.700 Denkmale. Allein die wunderschön restaurierte Altstadt umfasst 1.800 Denkmale. Eine von WMDE geförderte WLM-Fototour nach Erfurt am Wochenende vom 29. – 31. August lädt herzlich ein, diese einzigartige Kulturlandschaft zu dokumentieren. Mehr Informationen findest Du auf der Projektseite.

Could you add regional location information on this photo? I understand from a previous query on your talk page, that the exact location cannot be given due to reasons of privacy, but maybe the very un-specific region could be pointed out by you? I am re-organizing Featured pictures of Denmark and your photo is the only one, which I have not been able to categorize to a Region, although from the photo I guess it is most be at the North Sea Coast (which covers three Regions: Syddanmark, Midtjylland and Nordjylland). Category:Kodachrome 25 removed and reorganised

Hi,

I notice you created Category:Kodachrome 25, so I thought it would be polite to let you know I have rearranged it. This only had one entry; everything else was in the subcategory Category:Photographs taken on Kodachrome 25 film.

Since its parent was an almost-empty "holder", I moved Category:Photographs taken on Kodachrome 25 film to be a child of Category:Photographs taken on Kodachrome film (a new category) instead.

I have removed Category:Kodachrome 25 and moved its one entry into Category:Kodachrome (which is for the films, cases and cartons themselves).

I appreciate your work in categorisation, I just felt that in this case the category ended up being a little redundant.

nun ist es wieder soweit. Vom 1. bis zum 30. September findet zum fünften Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments statt. Im Mittelpunkt steht bekanntlich das Fotografieren von Kulturdenkmalen. Du hast an einem der letzten Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen und wir freuen uns auf weitere Bildbeiträge von Dir.

Viele interessante Motive, nicht nur Burgen und Schlösser, sondern auch Fachwerkhäuser, Brücken und Brunnen, technische und Industriedenkmale und vieles mehr gibt es noch zu fotografieren, damit sie in der Wikipedia dokumentiert werden können. Nützliche Tipps findest du auf unserer WLM-Projektseite. Du kannst gerne individuell Fototouren durchführen oder aber Dich auch Gruppentouren anschließen. Besonders freuen wir uns auf Fotos, die Lücken in den Denkmallisten der Wikipedia ausfüllen.

Darüber hinaus kannst Du auch an der Arbeit der Jury teilnehmen, die Mitte Oktober die Fotos bewerten und die Gewinner ermitteln wird. Bis zum 15. August kannst du hier Deine Bewerbung einreichen.
