First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

... in Marseille ?!?[edit]

C'est quoi cette frénésie de créer des centaines de catégories "...in Marseille" ? Pour le Guiness des records ? Pour que chaque photo ait une catégorie pour elle toute seule ? Laissez donc les photos arriver. On est toujours à temps de créer une catégorie quand il y a plusieurs photos sur le même sujet. C'est horripilant de devoir ouvrir une catégorie à chaque fois qu'on veut consulter une photo. Et on ne peut pas supprimer une catégorie créée. Bon, c'est bien ce que je craignais, c'est la course à l'échalotte. "Ils" y sont, nous devons y être. C'est pas mon truc.
Restons sur le seul exemple de "Animals in Marseille". Avions-nous vraiment besoin de créer cette catégorie pour y placer les quelque cinquante photos d'assiettes de bouillabaisse ou de rouille ? D'abord c'est de la cuisine, pas de la zoologie. Et puis la bouillabaisse n'est pas strictement "in marseille". Tiens, au fait, il y a une catégorie "Animals of Bouches-du-Rhône". Et, amusant, "Animals in Marseille" n'en fait pas partie. Et puis, encore plus pittoresque : "Bouillabaisse" est catégorisé dans "Marché aux poissons du Vieux-Port (Marseille)‎", qui est lui-même catégorisé dans... "Bouillabaisse" !
A force de mettre des catégories partout, on cafouille, et l'utilisateur est perdu de vue. Mais bon, çà occupe. --Fr.Latreille (talk) 16:25, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Tiens, un autre exemple, et puis j'arrêterai car je sens que je me heurte à un plus obstiné que moi. A quoi sert la sous-catégorie Category:Archives départementales des Bouches-du-Rhône in Marseille de la Category:Archives départementales des Bouches-du-Rhône ? Les archives départementales des BdRh sont à Marseille, et nulle part ailleurs. Il n'y a donc aucune pertinence à créer une sous-catégorie. --Fr.Latreille (talk) 20:15, 24 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Dans l'article de Wikipédia fr:Archives départementales des Bouches-du-Rhône, je lis :
Une annexe des Archives départementales était située à Aix-en-Provence. Depuis septembre 2004, elles se trouvaient dans bâtiment, conçu par l’architecte Jean-Michel Battesti, d'une superficie de 3 600 m2, et conservaient principalement des archives issues d'institutions basées à Aix-en-Provence : l'archevêché, la chancellerie du comté de Provence, le Parlement, les États ainsi que la sous-préfecture et le rectorat. La décision de fermer cette annexe a été prise en 2017. Les archives qui s'y trouvaient ont été transférées à Marseille. Le bâtiment est cédé à la municipalité d'Aix-en-Provence qui y installera ses propres archives.

Châteaux vs castels[edit]

Bonsoir,

J'ai placé dans la page de discussion de Category:Castles in Marseille une remarque au sujet du classement des châteaux dans les catégories nommées castles. Je crois qu'il faudrait faire quelque chose à ce sujet. --Fr.Latreille (talk) 23:38, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

C'est à peine si on comprend qu'il s'agit d'un rond-point (si ce n'est le titre, curieusement au pluriel), et si on sait pas où il se trouve, cette photo n'a aucun intérêt.
