First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Serliana[edit]

A me paioni archi a tutto sesto a colonne binate...

Ciao. --User:G.dallorto 01:41, 31 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comments Crop out the stairs and the grass patch and you have my vote. A more radical crop up to the sculpture's base gives interesting results but may not be everyone's cup of tea. Also needs slight curves adjustment, a bit too dark ATM --Vladanr 19:59, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chapels o Orartories?[edit]

:-)))))--Threecharlie (talk) 11:41, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ancora sull'architettura religiosa[edit]

Grazie :-)))--Threecharlie (talk) 12:28, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Vista panoramica[edit]

Intanto ti ringrazio e a presto Claudio

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Picture of the Year 2013 Results[edit]

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Marcok,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

Aspetto news :-)--Threecharlie (talk) 13:13, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I hope no one minds my weighing in on someone else's talk page, but in English a "porch" and an "arcade" are entirely different. A "porch" is raised above ground level; an "arcade" is at ground level or perhaps one step above. A "porch" is mainly a place for sitting; an "arcade" is mainly a place for walking, and may even extend straight through a building, where as a "porch" is strictly along the edge of the building. - Jmabel ! talk 16:01, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Jmabel: , help me for understand, therefore in Category:Porches in Emilia-Romagna the only porch is File:Piazza Santa Fara - Bobbio.JPG?--Threecharlie (talk) 23:04, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'd say so. I might call even that one an "arcade" (in a different sense of the word than I was thinking of above) because it is composed of a series of arches. But it is the only one I would call a porch. - Jmabel ! talk 00:15, 30 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marcok! I noticed that you've uploaded a few files tagged with {{Copyright by Wikimedia Italia}}. Specifically:

I'm afraid the wording of this template is not consistent with our licensing policy. Our licensing policy requires all content on Commons to be free. There used to be one single exception from that, which was that non-free content was allowed if the copyright was held by the Wikimedia Foundation. However, that exception has been removed from the policy (after the Wikimedia Foundation finally joined the free content movement), and more importantly: the exception never applied to Wikimedia chapters, which are legally independent of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Could you please review the licensing of these files? Given that the Wikimedia Foundation has released its logos under a free license, is there any content in the files mentioned above which the Wikimedia Italia chapter or any other contributor can claim copyright over and does not wish to release under a free license?

Thanks, LX (talk, contribs) 19:51, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message, LX. I'll modify I have fixed the tags. --Marcok (talk) 20:16, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fotos of Barletta Colossus[edit]

Dear User Marcok,

my name is Stefan E. A. Wagner, I am Archaeologist from Germany. At the moment, I am writing a scientific essay about the Barletta Colossus and I urgently need some pics of this statue.

I would use it for scientific publishing only. NO commercial use. I saw on Wikimedia, that you are a very good and clear fotographer, so I would feel very honored, if you could imagine to give me some pics for publication. Of course I would cite you as the photographer and you also would get a free version of my essay, if it will be published.

Please answer me on the following E-Mail-adress:

@Threecharlie: Tutto quello che so è in it:San Nazario (Italia) (non è proprio vicina dato che è in Valsugana). --Marcok (talk) 09:00, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Grazie :-)--Threecharlie (talk) 09:22, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Questa invece sì...[edit]

Rieccomi, problema simile a quello precedente.

Cordiali saluti. LIONEL76 (talk) 19:10, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cordialement. LIONEL76 (talk) 19:10, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
English: Good morning Marcok. Your photographs above are those of the castle of Azay-le-Rideau and not those of the castle of Chenonceau. cordially. LIONEL76 (talk) 19:10, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

--Marcok (talk) 08:37, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Architetto Sebastiano Locati (1862-1939).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

And also:

Yours sincerely, Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:54, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ronhjones: You tagged many images with a source provided. Most of the images were imported from it.wiki. You also tagged many images of monuments authorised for Wiki Loves Monumnets (where ALL monuments are authorised). But you also tagged as copyviol my own works, and I find it not acceptable for Commons:AGF. Please remove unnecessary tags and be careful. --Marcok (talk) 07:49, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
They were correctly tagged as a derivative works. There is no link to show they are PD, or a death date of the creator, or who the creator is - you cannot claim a 70 years after author dies, unless you show us the author and death date. Italian wiki might allow such omissions, but commons needs to be able to check that the license is valid for both the country of origin and the US. Also I note there are no licenses for the US in the images - that is another reason that could cause deletion. {{PD-100}} does not include licensing for the US. They need to be changed to an appropriate license in COM:TAG. Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:15, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ronhjones: Sorry, but most images you tagged are already with sources, and almost all are so old they are clearly out of copyright. For example File:Antiquitatum_variarum_volumina_XVII_pagina.jpg. Sometimes the sources are in the description field (it happens importing old images). You also tagged many Wiki Loves Monuments images I personally shoot (probably ignoring that ALL WLM-Italy monuments were previosuly authorized, even if there was a clear link to follow!). And so on. This means you apparently didn't spent any time to analyze - or even watch - every single image before tagging them. I'm a long-running Commons user and also an admin in it.wiki, but during the last 15 years till now I newer saw a such behaviour. As a GLAM WiR I imported - or helped importing - thousands images, also using other usernames. When an image can be easily fixed (like most images you previously listed), every Commons user generally helps fixing it. And all images will be fixed... if you leave enough time to Commons users. So I'm very sorry for the lack of collaboration. I think this doesn't create a good environment, expecially for new users. --Marcok (talk) 14:08, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty of files there where you are assuming that the image is past 70 years photographer's death, and you state "unknown". That is obviously very wrong. If it is truly unknown and the country is 70pma, then it has to be pre 1898 and use both {{PD-old-assumed}} + {{PD-1923}}. Just a quick look shows quite a few in the 1900-1920 region - you cannot guarantee they are PD, unless you can show the creator's death. Ronhjones  (Talk) 14:35, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
File:AlexanderPopovic.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Concorso Wiki Loves Monuments Italia 2018 (English version)

Grazie, Nemo 16:07, 12 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019[edit]

Bonjour,

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.

Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. Foto pagina Eugenio Soncini[edit]

Dunque i diritti erano suoi e sono passati a me. Ecco perché ho dichiarato che sono mie. Non è corretto? Cosa dovrei dichiarare? Grazie dell'aiuto. --Magneaz (talk) 10:49, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bain collection[edit]

@: I see you are tagging the Bain collection files for deletion because a jpg and a tif exist of the same file. The standard procedure has been to save both, and link one to the other. See for example: File:Prince Henry LCCN2014712471.jpg, the outliers are an artifact from migrating and renaming the images prior to User:Fae migrating the entire collection and using a standardized naming scheme, so they link automatically. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 20:10, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Vos photos à Versailles[edit]

Bonjour,

Salutations --Thor19 (talk) 09:14, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

--Marcok (talk) 10:01, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Monti by city[edit]

--Marco Chemello (BEIC) (talk) 08:17, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Toscana[edit]

Buongiorno Marcok,

Qui puoi consultare Il regolamento completo e per qualsiasi dubbio puoi scrivere a contatti@wikilovesmonuments.it.

Ti aspetto! Grazie, --Ferdi2005(talk) 10:37, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Grazie per aver partecipato a WikiLovesMonuments 2023 - Italia[edit]

(English version available here)

Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys[edit]

Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.

To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform). Both will run until approximately end October 2023.

  1. A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
  2. A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!

Many thanks! With kind regards, SFauconnier (talk) 10:16, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2023 in Toscana[edit]

Category discussion warning

World War III has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
