This image was originally posted at http://www.profi1a.de/dogwiki/index.php/Bild:Irishwhitered.jpg and i just moved it here to the commons a long time ago before i knew proper standards for moving a photo and providing all image info such as the original uploader, it was posted under that license, however that website no longer exists and I suppose that picture should be deleted, there are several other pictures available of that breed now anyway...--Ltshears (talk) 13:49, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ok. did you note that someone changed the source to www.irishredandwhitesetterclub.org/ch_ardbraccan_dunboynre.jpg? -- \mu/ 07:31, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes , i don't know who changed the source, but it wasn't me. Maybe the original owner of the image did it. The source that was posted up doesn't even link to that image, it links to a completely different image.. not sure.--Ltshears (talk) 15:23, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
the link change was a bit odd, but good that you didn't take the "missing permission" tag personally :) I don't think that you did anything wrong when you transferred files from dogwiki back in 2006. Of course, our practice has changed a bit since then, I know. Anyway, deletion will go its way now. -- \mu/ 16:38, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Hey, no problem.. i know i moved several images back then and i don't take any offense.. Thanks --Ltshears (talk) 18:57, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image categorizations of dogs and such[edit]

Thanks for adding categories to the relevant images, but for my images, do you mind keeping the date formats as is (Month/Day) instead of changing them around to Day/Month? This is a personal and cultural (American) preference and all of my images have the date in this format. Thanks. BrokenSphere 05:08, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ISO dates are commonly preferred in international projects. Did you know that [[2008-05-15]] is smartly and unambiguously handled by MediaWiki? see the linking of 2008-05-15 (which is automatically displayed as "15 May 2008" for users with English interface, too). Please note, that other users only know what May stands for in case they know English months names, whereas ISO dates are easily understandable at first glance for everyone. Further reading: ISO 8601 usage -- \mu/ 05:20, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I wasn't aware of that, so please excuse my ignorance. Is it desirable though to link the dates for each image like that or stick with the numbers unlinked? --BrokenSphere 16:07, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Dunno, depends on one's personal preference, I guess :) In the long run it's planned to use ISO dates from {{information}} templates for some additional features afaik (like "show me all firework images that were created on New Year's Day 2005 in Canada" or so), but I don't know if linking will be needed or if all ISO dates will be autolinked then (if this will happen at all in the next two years; waiting could feel a bit DNFish *g*). Some time ago I read about a possible functionality like that ISBN 1234567890 Invalid ISBN linking, but forgot where it was. It's all up to the future development of MediaWiki. -- \mu/ 17:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

az:[edit]

I have change everything, as you said and I follow to this page [1]. Did you want this or I did not understood anything. Explain please for what we need this page. Thanks.--Irada (talk) 08:13, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks :) -- \mu/ 09:14, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes. I have understood. It is very glad that could to help and thanks for explanations. Now all is ok :))--Irada (talk) 11:27, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding ((flickrreview))[edit]

Hi MU - can do, I hadn't done as (being an admin myself) I wasn't sure it was needed. Is it policy that pics uploaded by one admin need to be reviewed by a second admin? I always check the license very carefully for every pic. - MPF (talk) 16:46, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I didn't know :) I hope that all experienced users (admins or not, doesn't matter) know which licenses on flickr are usable and that they check carefully (I sometimes upload files from there too). But I guess it's always reasonable to let the bot (or, if the bot fails, another user) double-check the license. I know of several cases where the flickr license was changed afterwards and we had no proof at all that the license ever was a free one. Some of these files have been deleted therefore. -- \mu/ 17:03, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! Guess I ought to stick User:Admin on my page, it isn't something I've particularly wanted to brag about but suppose it is useful to mention. Good point about the potential for future license changes at flickr. - MPF (talk) 17:23, 14 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hair ice[edit]

I don't think this term exist in English. I can only find one single publication using this term, and that seems to have been written by a German.[2] The common English term appears to be either "Frost flower" (and its variations, though mostly used for slightly differently looking ice formations on live plants, but the formation mechanism is similar) or "Needle ice" (that typically refers ice needles forming on the ground—known in German as "Kammeis"—but again the mechanism of formation is similar. Methinks "Hair ice" is a neologism coined by translating the German term; I don't know if English even has a term for precisely this kind of ice formation. I think leaving these images at Category:Frost flowers would be better than inventing a new term. Or do you have more sources that would show that the term "hair ice" indeed is used among geologists or meteorologists in the English-speaking world and that it does refer to this phenomenon, too? Lupo 16:02, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lupo, I'm currently rewriting the "Haareis" article and related ones later. One good source is [3]. -- \mu/ 18:10, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Hey, that is indeed a very interesting source. Only problem (regarding the terminology) is that the authors' mother tongue is German again: they're both Swiss, form the University of Berne, and have German surnames. Ditto for Lenggenhager, whose publication I had found above... But well, if they can conclusively prove that the formation process indeed is different from needle ice or frost flowers and indeed depends on a fungus being present in the wood, maybe it's their prerogative to coin a term. Lupo 20:04, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
-- \mu/ 07:49, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
