Hallo Lycaon,

I noticed you have noticed my draft Valuable Image Proposal. I am curious to hear what you think of it?

Blacksmith Lapwing

Your lapwing photo with a lot of space in front of the bird is sensible artistically, but maybe not so sensible for an encyclopedia. Is it possible to crop out some grass in front of the bird, to centre the picture on the bird? I would really like to replace some of the photos of captive birds with your much better photo. Miombo

JMK 17:37, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

I am reasonably sure it was Miombo. The trees were quite high, and I don't remember having seen such high mopane. The guide (from the Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia) also told us this was miombo forest. I must confess that I don't know about the bark though. And as I had only a small point-and-shoot camera at the time with small memory card, I don't have extra pictures :-(. Lycaon 23:01, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Issues and thoughts

Confused bot drops load in wrong location
  1. Thank you for helping with the QIBot droppings! The bot seems to work better if the gallery tags are left for him/her/it though.
  2. I worked for almost 10 years in a restaurant that was listed as a wildlife art gallery. With the exception of one painting of the rear end of a deer (which was hung, interestingly enough, for the viewing pleasure of the non-smoking section) almost all of the paintings had the critters with their heads up and ready to move if necessary. It is an apology for not liking that one single solitary image of yours that I haven't liked. Your choice to accept it or not.
  3. I was going to write to TonyWills about changing from playing Tetris to Space Invaders, but it is actually just easier to mention this idea here. Do you have thoughts about this and if so, would you share those thoughts with me?

Thanks -- carol 11:31, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for help. I tried to do this my self, but I wasn`t happy with the results. Here I`m not so happy too (tree looks strange). But now I see areas in shadows where realy to dark. Well. I thought it is Anthemis arvensis, but now I thinks it`s not. The second one is this strange one, it grew in a quite dry place. Sfu 21:36, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

My search for where the '(' came from....

I found it here where you were cleaning up the page. I started to look for it thinking that perhaps the bot would choke on it; I ended up deciding that the bot would probably not even recognize it and also seeing that you had been doing some things to keep the nominations in order. While I was searching through the edit diffs, there were a few where I stopped and asked myself -- what the heck was he doing here? And always, when I figured it out it was the right thing.

I am going to leave that '(' there because of my theory that the bot won't even see it.... -- carol 17:08, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

wiki* no respector of time

I figured that the hours that were added to my banning on a different wikipedia could multiply and be used here for whatever I wanted. Especially since my ban was because of a misappropriate use of the word stalk which I rather assume I wasn't doing. Bumblebees business

How much do you know about these beasts? I have a couple of questions that I haven't readily found an answer to:

  1. ) Do bees grow appreciably once they have emerged from a larvae stage, or are there various sizes dependant on how well fed they were as larvae perhaps?
Well, I see that early season bumblebees, that were produced by the Queen working alone, are usually small, but it is now well into the season ....? --Tony Wills 05:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
  1. ) Do their colours fade with age
  2. ) Do they become progressively bald with age?
-) --Tony Wills 00:54, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
The reason I ask these strange questions is that we supposably only have 4 species of introduced bumblebees, two of which generally occur in the North Island. All the examples that I have examined closely are of the colour form of 'Bombus terrestris', but there often seems to be two distinct sizes, also some have very thin 'pile'. --Tony Wills 05:40, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Question and/or killing time

I still have a few minutes left before the lighting here is good for what I was doing; I have a question about something you did on another wiki. I am bored with waiting for word on the hierarchy of image types there, so please, allow me to ask a question about this other wiki here....

How come you took your diagram of the starfish off from the genus (I think that is where I put it) wikispecies page that I put it on? I thought about it as much as I think about many things before I put it there. It seems that a diagram is best for an example of a genus -- leaving the photographs for the species -- at least it seems that way to me. -- carol 01:46, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Pink tulip image

Hi Lycaon,

You declined my photograph of a pink tulip at Commons:Quality images candidates because of oversaturated colors. I've tried to fix the image, so could you please take another look at it and see if the problem persists? Thanks a lot! --bdesham  19:57, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Surely

Time you had the tools for yourself? I would be happy to nom you, regards --Herby talk thyme 09:12, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks but bad timing. I'll be out for most of the time for the coming two-and-a-half months. (4 weeks at sea, two weeks Crete and then Sardinia 10 days). Maybe, I've you'll still have me, end of April? Lycaon 10:07, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Pliny, starfish diagrams and other wiki

I think I just read where Pliny the elder had a huge distaste for both basil and Sardina but don't ask me to find it now.

Your POTD today, I tried to go through the proper channels to determine when and where and even if it is a good idea to use diagrams at wikispecies (like at the genus level) but no one cared to offer any advice or image type hierarchy logic there. Are you certain that removing that change I made there was a good one? -- carol 12:04, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Just so you know I read this. Give me a couple of hours, I'll come back to you. Lycaon 13:04, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
Can you define 'hour' and 'couple of hours' for me? -- carol 01:45, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
Sh*t. Been to busy. If one is only home for 2x24 hrs. And now I'm gone at sea again until Friday. See you then ;-). Lycaon 06:06, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

My preference for Wikispecies is photographs, and when those are not available I'd go for drawings of animal/plant habituses. Only as a last resort I'd use anatomical drawings. Maybe it is a personal preference, but IMO an anatomical drawing of an A. rubens is not general enough to epitomize a higher taxon. Other people may have different opinions, so if you revert, I won't re-revert. ;-) -- Lycaon 17:04, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Land legs

It is either the colors of the gif (the animation is condensed from a 2 hour ordeal) or the viewer does not have land legs at the moment of viewing.

I considered to try to fix the gif -- but an avi exists and it would be about 16 million times better to work with that. -- carol 14:32, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

An image question

Hi, Hans,
I know you are at sea (lucky you are), so my question could wait. Here's the question. I was at tide pools and took this image of the bubbles. These bubbles behaved as soap bubbles do, except they were lasting foreever including their colors (until next big wave washed them away). The bubbles were all over tide pools. I wonder, if there could be some tide pools animals, or algae, who made that effect by secreting mucus, or some organic material. The colony of Harbor Seals was also in a very close proximity. Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 14:34, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

I figured this out.Thanks.--Mbz1 23:42, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Sea mouse VIC

Hi Lycaon, Michael has test nominated a photo of his of a sea mouse as a VIC. In my review of his image I see your image of the species as a competitor, but conclude that Michaels image is the most valued of an individual. However, I am not a domain expert and I may be missing some important points in my argument. Do pass by if you feel there are additional relevant comments to be added to the VIC. Cheers -- Slaunger 22:56, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Unknown flowers

Hi Hans,

Hope that the sea was not too rough. Spring is coming here and new species (for me) of wild flowers appear everyday. Maybe you can help identifying these: Image:Flowers February 2008-5.jpg‎ Image:Flowers February 2008-4.jpg‎. The second are really small, about 5mm diameter -- Alvesgaspar 00:52, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Joaquim. The sea was quite rough (waves up to 5m), but we survived ;-). I see you already found out the easier one (G. aparine). The other one I don't know on sight, though I've seen it before. I might come up with an answer this weekend. Cheers. Lycaon 17:08, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Quality image question

Hi, you reviewed the image I nominated (Image:FlamingoSD.jpg), and said that it did not have a proper ID. I added more information on the image's page, do you now believe it to be sufficient, or is there more things that I need to include? Just curious, this the first nomination I've tried. --Nehrams2020 05:35, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, that would indeed have sufficed if the identification had been correct ;-). The bird on your photograph is actually a Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor). Just change the info and I will re-assess your picture. Cheers. Lycaon 07:22, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Wow, that was embarrassing. I'm not too knowledgeable on the different kinds of flamingos, and the SD Zoo website claimed that the exhibit was home to the Caribbean Flamingos. But looking at the other images of the Lesser Flamingos, I believe you are correct. Thanks again for the help. --Nehrams2020 08:53, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Pilz

I found it out. It's a Schizophyllum commune with a male Pollenia sp on top :-) --Richard Bartz 18:15, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
I've noticed. It's a great picture!! Lycaon 21:00, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Hello, please can you tell me with which camera you took this picture : Image:Liocarcinus marmoreus 2.jpg. I plan to buy a camera, and I'm interested to produce macro photographs for commons. You can answer on user:Yug/Camera. 220.135.4.212 17:04, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

a little question

Ey do you happen to know who is the user with the must featured images? and how many would these be?... i got kind of curious today.. :P --LadyofHats 08:27, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Oops, tough question. It might be Richard Bartz here on Commons with at least 50 FP's, but on en: it surely is Fir0002 with more than 100. The latter is no longer nominating on Commons because he does not submit photographs that are of a sufficient large size. And for FP illustrations, you most likely know who is heading the pack ;-)). Lycaon 08:40, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi!

Nice 2 have you back, Hans --Richard Bartz 23:21, 5 April 2008 (UTC) says "hello"

Thanks Richard :-). Lycaon 15:56, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

I'd already applied NR to this image. Looking at the two versions side by side I only see some reduction in sharpness. --Dori - Talk 22:31, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Didn't seem to have been completely successful, didn't it? Lycaon 06:08, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, you can only remove a certain type of noise after that you'll be taking out the detail with the noise. Besides I didn't think it was that noisy (or rather the noise that's left is more like film grain rather than digital noise so it's not as disturbing). --Dori - Talk 12:53, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Misumena vatia

Oh, well. Thanks for the heads-up, anyway. At least now I know what it's not. :-) I think there may be someone over at fr:wp who might be able to ID the species; if not, I'll try elsewhere.
Cheers and happy editing,
Arria Belli | parlami 22:29, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Hans, I hope you bring from Spain a good collection of nice critters. What do you thing of this version of your "sinister" (funesta) beetle? The original is a bit dark imo -- Alvesgaspar 09:05, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Ola, Joaquim ;-). Your edit looks good too. I'm afraid a lot of my pictures are bit on the dark side recently. And to add insult to injury, I yesterday dropped my camera with not so happy result. I might have to by a new one :-(.
BTW, I'll be travelling to Portugal this summer (3 to 4 weeks). Any tips for lodging for 3 to 4 people, preferably south but possible 12 days south and 12 days north. We don't like hotels however ;-). Cheers. Lycaon 09:12, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
  • Sorry about your camera. But if we see it from the positive side, you have now an excellent excuse to buy an Alfa 350 ;-). What precisely do you have in mind for your lodging in Portugal? There are excellent aparthotels in the south, though not cheap during summer. For 3 or 4 people it is normally a good solution. Alvesgaspar 20:46, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

recipe for a sleep potion

I used to joke about reading the bash manpage when I needed to sleep but couldn't -- this is however, is becoming a reality when reading the rules in this latin dictionary for suffixi. My goal seems worthwhile to me though; while I truly loved the 1931 (but I thought it was 1933) M. Grieve tome; I loved it as a period piece and atmospheric work and not so much for helpful information. It is now a decade later, the work is online and what I see is so much paste from that book. Paste about Pliny and paste about latin words -- my new short term goal is to re-research this (loaded google search) and I have some insights into latin which need verification; perhaps you can help? This entry makes me think that 'ex' is used to honor the person that was the not recognized (but perhaps the real) authority or author or whatever. I just don't know if this is part of the latin syntax stuff. Also, I search and search for something concise about 'io' as a suffix -- and anything that looks like 'io', but the drowsy falls upon me around the time that I reach the section with the heading "Imperative Mood" (yawn). Can I pick your brain about this and if you agree, should I bring tweezers or a shovel? -- carol 02:26, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Looks more like you're in another mood again. There is nothing wrong in admitting you made a wrong judgement and leave it at that. Everyone makes mistakes at times. Galleries are equally valuably as means of categorization as categories proper. Have a close look at the files concerning again, I will give you the option of restoring yourself first. Cheers. Lycaon 14:09, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Does the mood look good or bad? I really like articles for the encyclopedias and categories for the image collections. The thing is, they can both exist. It is silly to only have one or the other -- especially with all of the galleries that exist here which are just pasted lists of images. Pasted lists of images have less information than categories do which at least give a hint at the filename and size. Category are my preference, but both can exist. If the category becomes more informative than the gallery; I cannot help this situation more than asking that they both exist. -- carol 14:38, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
BTW ex means out in Latin as in outside, or out of the box but also out of fashion which brings us to out of use or former (author), not as a favour but as a kind of history. Lycaon 14:11, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
The english wikipedia entry says 'homage' which implies more honor than what you say here. I am really thinking that Senecio was named after Seneca the younger. My translation of Pliny describes a man which would be like that genus. My translation (from penguin, btw) also assigns the remedy that Grieve said was for Groundsel as being for Erigeron. They just make stuff up, don't they? (like you and my moods) -- carol 14:38, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Also, did you answer the question about io? -- carol 14:40, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
