First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Yes, I saw that... it was a little roguish of me to post that on your feedback page, apologies... it is a little large and colorful, though - almost intimidating. I prefer short, friendly welcome messages myself. The large ones make it look like there is a great deal to learn, and indeed there is, but one can easily contribute without knowing 99% of it, and learn as one goes along. One puppy's opinion. KillerChihuahua 11:25, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I got mine too after I'd been here a while [1] I still click the links on it all the time. I just don't like to see someone who has a talkpage with no talking on it, and didn't know how else to break the ice. See this [2] for the company your in for having recieved one from me :-) DVD R W 16:12, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And an observation on the colorfulness of that template, I think the Commons tends to attract the more imagey people, who think more about graphics than text. That is why I think this welcome message has taken off here, I could be wrong though. DVD R W 17:05, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking for the damn thing. It was formerly not particularly important, especially before OTRS even got started, you know? So not like I made a habit of it. Also trying to recover my email from my dead computer, having no success there either.I have, however, taken the step of re-emailing PZ and asking him to send a new email, this time directly to permissions, so one way or another this should be handled quite soon. I have removed the big loud template from my page; please do not replace it, thanks. I am more than willing to continue this discussion but as it was clear before you placed the template that I was aware of the base situation, templating me seems unnecessary. Since PZ sent me the image for use on Wikipedia himself, there is no question of permission, merely of legal paperwork. Surely a little patience is not too much to ask. File:Barnstar_nature.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

OTRS frustration[edit]

Hi KillerChihuahua. I am having a problem uploading a photograph in connection with OTRS. I have the email permission from the photographer and have sent it on to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Now I am trying to upload the photo in Commons. I click that it is someone else's work and get hung up in the "Release Rights" step. I don't understand how to input the OTRS information about getting permission already and having a license to enter. The wizard isn't making it clear to me. I re-read the directions under "OTRS" which tell me I am supposed to upload the photo then "tag the file [double-parenthesis]subst: OP[double-parenthesis]" but I don't understand what to tag or how to do this with the wizard. Do you mind explaining this to me? It would help with the massive frustration which has been building for the last hour as I have tried to unsuccessfully to upload the file. I am sure the wizard is great, but in the old days I used to be able to handle this OTRS business with no problem, grumble, grumble. Thank you. Hisland7 5 Aug '12 ####

Sorry, I wasn't online yesterday. Are you still struggling with this, or have you found help elsewhere? KillerChihuahua (talk) 17:01, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My struggle continues. In fact, I'm stymied. Your interest is very much appreciated. By the way, I thought I used to sign discussion pages with #### for my username and date. It didn't seem to work.
No, it's ~~~~. You were right that it was a symbol repeated four times, but it is a tilde not a hash. Let me take a look at the pages as they are currently, and I will get back to you here shortly. KillerChihuahua (talk) 17:29, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, the parens are actually curly braces {{ and }} and that indicates a template. OP is OTRS pending, which means the permissions has been sent to OTRS and the image is waiting on an OTRS volunteer to verify the permissions. After you select the file to upload, the next screen is release options. Choose the radio button for This file is not my own work. and fill in the source and author name. Below, choose Another reason not mentioned above and type or paste {{subst:oP}}. That should do it. KillerChihuahua (talk) 17:38, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You are so kind to help me. I followed your instructions. What happened next was a red error prompt telling me the following, "This does not seem to be valid wikitext, or does not contain a license." So then I pasted after {{subst:OP}} the license in the exact wording from the permission template, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0, but I still got the same error prompt. Can you think of what I might be doing wrong? Thank you again for your help.Hisland7 (talk) 18:55, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure; have you considered taking a different tack? Try using the old form rather than the Wizard. It is located at Commons:Upload. KillerChihuahua (talk) 20:21, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
