Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

It's certainly much more mellow and friendly here than on en.wiki. It's much harder to argue and fight over images; and with all the different nationalities represented here, an argumentitive American, Brit, or Frenchman probably sees something he wants to get pissy over, discovers that his potential opponent only speaks Dutch, Russian, or German, and says fuck! and goes about his business instead. Also POV, ownership, experience, referencing, and all the other contentious things on en.wiki have few or no counterparts here on Commons. The PNG files use too much memory, and so the Commons gives too coarse images to the articles on en:WP.

Not sure what you mean about "too much memory"; as long as you keep PNG dimensions under 12,500,000 pixels (e.g. a square 3,535 pixels to a side) there should be no problem. Putting a PNG in an SVG or PDF really doesn't help with Wikipedia/Wikimedia display. If you're desperate to avoid PNG, try GIF or a JPEG. If your PDF files are in vector format, then try to capture this vector source into a vector SVG. AnonMoos SVG format is really the best for schemas or draw. raster picture should be used only for photos, screen capture or graphics that can't be in a vector format. JPEG is really the worse format except for photos because of lost in compression.

SVG from LaTeX in Ubuntu?

Tiger66 -- The worst of all is something which is pretending to be in one format, but not actually really in that format (e.g. a PNG pretending to be an SVG). You're right that JPEG isn't preferred for this type of graphic, but an honest JPEG would still be better than a phoney SVG... AnonMoos (talk) 03:34, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

PDF created from LaTex

Dear AnonMoos and Tiger66,

I updated the pdf source from which I created the png files. Let me link it...

My Linux machine is running, but I haven't had (and don't expect to have) an afternoon to play with command lines to convert LaTeX files to SVG. (I've gotten lazy in Windows 7. Perhaps I can separate each graphic as a separate file in LaTeX, and export each to SVG (without pdf)....

English Wikipedia

well, they have removed my user page, but somehow did not ban me. perhaps Commons is not as broken as I thought. anyhoo, i see that Risker is suggesting that you mail evidence to arbcom. my experience with arbcom is that they are useless, or worse than useless, because they led me to believe they were deliberating my case, so for eight months there was no reply. a reply only came when i wrote to them, and i was told that basically they hoped i would go away.

the reason for this message is to point out that Risker's request is like the court asking the defendant to send his alibi to the prosecutor instead of telling it to the jury. im not very good with analogies, but that one seemed appropriate. good luck with your case. ironholds will win, because thats the way its rigged. if they dont let you post your evidence, suggest that the case be dropped or similar, because they will not let you post the evidence that would show who should win. good luck, Kiefer.
