First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

No problem

Thanks for picking up on the "rubbish"! Regards --Herby talk thyme 16:45, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

And many thanks for user the "scope" template too! Saves me another job. If you are doing that can you also add a {{Welcome}} one at the same time. Being a reasonably good multilingual template it may just help users who are trying to contribute. Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 18:29, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Socks & ducks!

Thanks for the message. I see what you mean & I have warned the user.

However this is what is usually referred to as a "duck case". If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck & looks like a duck.... There is no question in my mind you are correct - however equally there is no evidence to suggest that the user has further accounts (or really is causing much disruption, more inconvenience) so for now I will not run CU. Please do not let that stop you from asking again if you see something that concerns you. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:13, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Ähm

what page or image is this releated to? abf /talk to me/ 17:53, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Indef blocked user

Not sure what you mean - most of the info is here thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:01, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Given the amount of copyvio deleted material between the multiple accounts I would consider any remaining material's licensing to be very suspect. However while I know a bit about some things licensing is not my area in depth - you would be better contacting someone who knows more about the people (the originator of the CU req maybe) or folk who no more about flickr licensing & abuse of flikr licensing. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:37, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

commons sig

I think you have done it now but nice idea. In practice I think you should do what I did (& I imagine others too). Search around till you find the elements of what you want in other peoples signatures and then combine the bits you want to make your own. In practice this will give you good experience using wiki markup language and (because you will have to look around quite a bit) more experience of the project. Wander through community talk pages as well as user pages - you will learn quite a bit I hope & find your ideal signature. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:01, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Huelva

Hello. Sorry, but I don´t speak English. See on "Huelva". I wrote that article and I do not deal why you request the erased one. It is an original article, without copying. I want to be completing next days. Can you help me? Please, cancel the order of erased. Thank you. --Calapito 13:44, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the information. --Calapito 13:57, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

re:Thanks

Hi Kanonkas, no problem at all, I first thought about speedy too, but then saw the cat and therefore made the redirect, thanks for being watchful, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 17:39, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Not within our scope?

Hi Kanonkas. Please explain the message you left in my talk page. "Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope". I only have photos of various places. None of them is within Wikipedia Common's scope? Why? Regards, --Helentr 19:59, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

I have not written any articles, apart from my user page. So there is no problem with the photos? I am relieved.Regards, --Helentr 20:18, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, that is all right, although puzzling for me. I don't remember writing any "Gallery article", but then maybe I have lost too many gray cells :) Anyway, I don't find anything missing. It is just that, if I had made some mistake, I would like to know what it was, so that I will not repeat it. Regards, --Helentr 09:31, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Userpage

Shall I protect your userpage after this attack of vandalism? Regards, abf /talk to me/ 11:44, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

No content pages

Yes - I'm not really sure. Created by a "known" user with no content.... I've put it on my watch list! Thanks (& expect one on Meta today - sorry for the delay!) --Herby talk thyme 07:25, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Kanonkas! In Source line on my pictures license i add "My Father private collection Beer Sheva Israel" Is this enough? Thank you--Rst1 20:19, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Flickr images

Hi. As a result of your request at Commons talk:Flickr images/reviewers, I have added you to the reviewers list. Please see the instructions at Commons:Flickr images/reviewers and add {{User trusted}} to your userpage. You can ask me if you need any help. Cheers, giggy (:O) 04:37, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't mind; I'd be happy to hear from you if you have any problems. Cheers, giggy (:O) 03:27, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Re: Trusted User

Thanks for your note. I put that on my talk page after I found out what "trusted user" meant, so that people would know what happened. Later I went through and removed my name from the flickr review templates in the images I had put my name.
A question: How difficult is it to get trusted user status? Do you think I would have any chance? J.delanoygabsadds 23:29, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Your recent full page protection

Hi there,

yes thank you for pointing that out. I felt that the page had to be protected because I don't want the Commons to run into trouble with copyright issues with various museums and felt the matter very urgent. But I should have requested another sysop to protect it instead, that is true. I am now having a good talk with the user involved in this issue and it looks like we should be able to settle this without an edit-war or page protection. cheers Gryffindor 06:25, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Wanna help with COM:VI?

Hej Kanonkas, I have noticed your appprentice-mentor type of dialogue you have been having Rocket. Seems like you two are working nice together :-) From your posts I see that you are very eager to learn and contribute here and I was wondering if you could help me out with a few practicalities relating to the Valued images project, which has been under development and test during the last 4-5 months? If you do not know about the project and the goings on, the main content page is COM:VIC (and the related pages in the navigation window to the right) and the projects discussion page Commons talk:Valued images candidates. We are currently quite busy making the last preparations to go online, and we could need an assistant or two to do some well described tasks. Have a look around, and find the project relevant and feel you have the time and will to help, do contact me. Med de bedste hilsener, -- Slaunger 22:05, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

You 've got mail

Hello Kanonkas, I sent you mail concerning comment/discussion/deletion of a picture of mine in the Commons. I thought it would be no problem to use an image from Flickr, which is tagged as 'öffentlich'. --Heavyuser 11:16, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Levit image

Sorry -- for some reason, I thought Levit was born in the 1800s, which would have made the image free to use. Sorry! rootology (T) 16:57, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Re: Your Thanks

Hi Kanonkas. I’m sorry for my bad English. I apologize for that. I really enjoyed your thanks. I think that images are most important for an encyclopedia. I hope I can help and don't make many mistakes!!! Sincerely --Jacopo Werther 23:07, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Giggy's RfB

G'day

I just wanted to say a huge thanks for your support in my RfB. It just closed, and I'm now a bureaucrat. If you ever want to discuss any of my actions, as a 'crat, admin, or plain old user, please don't hesitate to leave a note on my talk page.

And I admit it, you were first! :D Cheers, giggy (:O) 10:42, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Guess what time it is!

Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/Kanonkas. Just add you acceptance note under my comments then add it to Requests and votes (it goes on top). Good luck! Rocket000 11:04, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Is it failing to sign due to excitement time, Rocket? ;) giggy (:O) 11:06, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
It must have been... Thanks. And thanks for not using {{Unsigned}} or something. That would have been embarrassing >< Rocket000 11:40, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Just a friendly reminder that in these cases it is preferable to place {{subst:welcome}} before any other messages. It is one of our best-translated templates, and it generally useful to new users. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:44, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Dear Kanonkas,
Concerning the last picture from Nizar Chaari I upload, he sent it to me with several other pictures, precising that all pictures of him are free of rights. I have his mail (in French) if you are interested. Moumou82 18:43, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you ! I have asked the author to officialy confirm his free release of pictures to OTRS. Is it possible to wait deleting the picture until tomorrow so that Mr. Chaari can send the mail to OTRS ? Moumou82 19:02, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Comment at COM:DN

Some serious advice Kanonkas, this edit wasn't particularly helpful. Your not an admin yet, and even if you were: There are better ways of trying to get users to calm down and be communicative that wording it like an outright treath. Stay melon - you should learn from the way Matt worded his reply there. Also remember that not all conbtributors speaks English as well as you do... Regards, Finn Rindahl 21:45, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Kanonkas, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references....
As I said in the close, please heed the comments of all, particularly your neutrals and opposes, and please do not hesitate to ask for help if you need it. Many people want you to succeed and will be glad to help. Best wishes and I look forward to working with you. ++Lar: t/c 14:05, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

PS, please update your entries in Commons:List of administrators by adminship status in other Wikimedia projects as I don't know which projects you have adminship on. You may want to create a wikimatrix such as I did. Again, congrats and best wishes! ++Lar: t/c 14:14, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Doors of Night.jpg

I have uploaded this image, and attempted to add a fair use rationale to the page. Specifically the following template: {{Doors of Night}} This is because I believe that the image fits into the non-free fair use category. However the template does not appear as I expected it to. See [3]. However I do not know how to implement this template on the page itself. Your help would be appreciated. Jordan Busson 13:40, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. Jordan Busson

User Talk

Hi, I just archived User talk:WeHaWoe/Archive#My Request for Adminship where I had a question you probably oversaw. No wonder ;) -- but, besides, have a few more questions:

  • What's the COM Template for "automatic" archiving by bot?
  • How do I ask for proofreading by a native French? it's about Template User:WeHaWoe/Pink_CC/fr.
  • How do you think about thatone? Talk on User talk:WeHaWoe/TestSite was less than welcoming and is lame. May be my arguments were lame, too, that I was not convincing, maybe I just had the wrong day or had invited the wrong people to comment. Would it make sense to ask for comments or kind of "review" in COM:VP? Would you eventually do that for me? (I suppose you'd put it better). TX, WeHaWoe 06:28, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

User talk:DenghiùComm

Es tut mir leid wenn ich Sie nochmals störe, aber ich versehe immer noch nicht um was es geht. Ich habe NIE irgend etwas auf Commons aufgeladen. I know you delete that picture because it is unfree for commercial use, however, in Wikipedia, it is also deleted as well. Image:Taiska.JPG

You added template No source for the image [4]. The image has the author (name and username in fiwikipedia), the original upload log (showing that the author uploaded it to fiwikipedia) and the source (transferred from fiwikipedia). (And of course the original licence CC-BY-2.5.) Would you please detail what information is missing. --AB (talk) 23:41, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Considering your worry of whether the image has ever been in fiwikipedia [5] you can find the upload here [6] and the deletion here [7]. If you will see the original data attached to the image when it was in fiwikipedia you should contact some administrator in fiwikipedia. (Though AFAIK it is the responsibility of the administrator in fiwikipedia to verify these things before s/he deletes an image marked with NowCommons in fiwikipedia.) Hope that you will find the information soon and remove the No source tag. --AB (talk) 08:36, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Johnny Fox

You deleted the wrong Johnny Fox picture.

I uploaded Johnny Fox.jpg, with the space, to the Commons, so I could use it on Wikipedia. I then found that there was an existing Johnny Fox.jpg on Wikipedia. I wanted to use my picture instead of the one existing on Wikipedia, so I re-uploaded my picture to the Commons as JohnnyFox.jpg, with NO space. I left the note on the talk page of Johnny Fox.jpg WITH a space asking for it to be deleted. You deleted JohnnyFox.jpg with NO space so I'm back to where I started. If you can undelete JohnnyFox.jpg with NO space, and delete Johnny Fox.jpg WITH a space, I'd appreciate it. I'd rather not have to screw around with the existing Johnny Fox.jpg on Wikipedia just to make room for my mistake on the Commons.

All things considered, I wish I'd just ignored Wikipedia telling me I should upload the image to the Commons instead of to Wikipedia. Propaniac (talk) 13:53, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

First, what all do I need to make Twinkle work here? Is there any dependencies I also need to import (e.g. some .js function WP has that Commons doesn't)?

And second, when I was looking at your subpages for twinkle scripts, I found User:Kanonkas/Helpful which gave me some ideas for templates and possibly creating a language neutral list of admins, a visual version of Commons:List of administrators. We have some nice language icons I can use. I was wondering if there was any icons we can use for stewards and for admins that are admins elsewhere. (Using WP's globe for generic admin makes it confusing, but that icon's used enough on Commons and other projects that it makes sense, we just need something else. Maybe the projects' favicons like ?). I was also thinking about adding icons for skills people have (e.g. for bot owners/technically-minded users or for those who are good at retouching photos). I have no problem finding icons (actually I categorized many myself), but I would like to hear any ideas or suggestions. Rocket000 (talk) 18:49, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Nevermind, the first question. I just found Commons:Twinkle. Rocket000 (talk) 19:03, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Still working on this? Or can I redirect it? I added a few params to {{User admin}} so now you can change the colors. Rocket000 (talk) 15:19, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Your removal of a message on Image:WWERawHD.jpg

I have put the message back as it's not supposed to be taken as yelling but is like that so it gets noticed. If you would like to switch the message to caps and Lowercase letters...be my guest but the message has to stay.--   ChristianMan16  17:55, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

I put that there at request of the deleting admin or restored it. He said to put it there so things like what he did wouldn't happen again.--   ChristianMan16  18:47, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
It tagged in some way though so people don't assume it a copyvio...cause my bet is not all admins look at the deletion log.--   ChristianMan16  19:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

I own the copyright to all those images. You can see on my Flickr account. Do I need to reupload them with a new licence, or can I edit the license on the ones I have already uploaded?

Yes I am the Flick account holder of where those pictures were uploaded from. To be honest I am confused as hell about the different licenses. Are you able to upload them for me with the correct licences? So to be a pain in the butt.

No Copyright violation!

Why that? I have loaded the smily from wikipedia commons, and made some changes on it myself, and reloaded it again!!!!!! What do you say man? WHERE ARE THE VIOLATIONS??

You are right, I will make my own ones! no problem, it was just I wanted to spare time, didn't look for the licening. will take just few minutes!--Mnokel (talk) 20:41, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Oblivion images

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Shendary (talk • contribs) 20:51, 28. Jul 2008 (UTC)

O'k, I try write on English... All my picture - screenshots, I have made them in TES-Construction Set. Today. Why you delete them? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shendary (talk • contribs) 20:58, 28. Jul 2008 (UTC)

I have not correctly understood categories of copyrights. Tell, they should be carried to what category, that them have not removed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shendary (talk • contribs) 21:05, 28. Jul 2008 (UTC)

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Shendary (talk • contribs) 21:16, 28. Funny

Well it's not our job to decide wheter or not an image should be used on some article, which is why the deletion request got kept.

Briliant reasonong. So, if I upload a map of UK that includes Italy, Albania and planet Mars, it would nt be our job to decide whether someone will actualy use this map. We should keep it, because someone might decide to use it. Briliant reasonong. --Ante Perkovic (talk) 13:18, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
There is a limit to absurdity, and that would fall outside it. Images must be potentially educational to fall within COM:SCOPE, and that is clearly not "potentially educational" -- the image in question may potentially have an educational purpose.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 14:16, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
No, it can not have educational purpose. It is a duplicate with errors. Why we need duplicate with errors??? --Ante Perkovic (talk) 16:00, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
To compare it to ones without errors? I don't know. We just host it. If people find it useful, ask them why they use it, not us. Rocket000 (talk) 18:46, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
Fascinating. Maybe we should we have duplicate articles on wikipedia too. One would be correct, one not. Wikipedia's new moto would be "don't ask us why we have wrong data. Ask user why he reads it". Fascinating... really fascinating. --Ante Perkovic (talk) 04:51, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
If you want a serious answer, you would do well to stop mocking perfectly legitimate practices.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 16:02, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Wikipedia isn't about being "right" either, it's about verifiability. We don't have such a policy on Commons, but we do have a specific scope. The whole purpose of Commons is to be a free media repository. That's it. We're not presenting anything as truth here. If project decides to use a certain image, who are we to say they can't? Those things are editorial decisions and should be made locally. Rocket000 (talk) 17:35, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Copyright Images

I would like to know how can I upload the album cover pics here because I'm creating a new Spanish Michael Jackson Site because the Spanish original it's not complete and when I can't make changes there.

I want to create a complete Spanish Michael Jackson Wikipedia with his complete Life, Music, Remixography, Videography, etc., and I want to put some pics of him, of his cover albums and singles, like I saw in the English Michael Jackson Wiki's page.

I don't want to violate any copyright and I don't want that you will cancel my account but I don't know how can I'll upload this kind of pics without violate copyright restrictions.

Thanks for you help and sorry for my English (I'm Spanish).

Removal of Image:Wojna w gruzji war in georgia.jpg

Hi, it seems you removed Image:Wojna w gruzji war in georgia.jpg due to alleged copyright violation ( http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=delete&page=Image:Wojna_w_gruzji_war_in_georgia.jpg ). This image was uploaded a moment ago by me and User:Kazbek. This is original work, first published in our portal kaukaz.pl, on this page: http://www.kaukaz.pl/dzial-agresja/agresja-rosji-na-gruzje.php I realize this image is of professional quality so it may well wake suspition it's been copied from some other source like a major newspaper but it hasn't. Could you please restore the image or let us upload it again? I'm also adding this request to Undeletion requests. Regards,

Mkosmul (talk) 20:55, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Please see OTRS. The website you gave me clearly says "all rights reserved" and we can't allow such images, but if I'm wrong please give me more informaton. Thanks! --Kanonkas(talk) 21:00, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
OK, we'll send a confirmation e-mail to OTRS. I understand your stance and appreciate your vigilance :) I'll write any further comments in the corresponding section of Undeletion requests to avoid duplication. Regards, Mkosmul (talk) 22:05, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
we can't allow copyrighted images. Keep in mind all images not in the public domain are copyrighted including every single one that's freely licensed (licenses mean nothing without a law behind them). Rocket000(talk) 16:58, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes that wasn't what I meant in the above, I just said it wrong, heh. --Kanonkas(talk) 17:27, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

It's a good thing you mentioned the SSP case, otherwise we'd still be dealing with a disruptive user. Cheers, Spellcast (talk) 22:35, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Proxy blocks

Might be good if you used the "drop down" reason box (or create one) as it points to the relevant policy which would help people who find themselves blocked. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:47, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Question

Kanonkas! I've got (again)a question... What is license image from en. Wikipedia destiny? When can I use this?--Amdrag (talk) 15:57, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

That is no license, that is the "source" you'll have to see on the image what license their is. Regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 16:47, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello. You appear to have essentially replicated every photo I took with minor changes, or no changes. Why? --David Shankbone (talk) 20:28, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

I just cropped them a little, hope you don't mind that. --Kanonkas(talk) 20:39, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
No, not at all. But they barely changed and seem like duplicates, so I listed them as such. I can't really tell the difference between Image:Hilary Duff 5.jpg and Image:Hilary Duff by David Shankbone.jpg, so I didn't understand why they were created. --David Shankbone (talk) 20:42, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
You can only speedy dupe exact duplicates. Obviously those weren't exact dupes. --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 20:46, 14 August 2008 (UTC)
They are, essentially. Additionally, Kanonkas listed the dates of the photos as August 2008, but that's the date of the cropping, not the date of the photo, which will confuse anyone not familiar with it. I suppose I don't understand the purpose of making very, very minor changes on photos that aren't used. --David Shankbone (talk) 20:51, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

OP blocks

Couple of questions

  1. Why do you place varying block lengths?
  2. I do think a /16 block must be discussed somewhere. Blocking 65K IP addresses unless they are all open proxies (pretty unlikely) is wrong without community discussion).

Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:59, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for that Herby about the 16 block, but it looked to be a source of proxies but such big damage is a big concern so I've unblocked it, thanks for the note. Regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 09:43, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Please do not place such a block again without community approval & after a project CU has checked the range. I have now had time to do so & I can confirm there is more than one valid user on that range.
Why are you using differing block lengths? --Herby talk thyme 11:18, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Won't do. That depends on the proxy and what duration I think should be fine. --Kanonkas(talk) 11:22, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes - so can I ask what actual criteria you use in making that decision please? It may be helpful to me in the future. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:38, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately this isn't going to help you. I don't have such a critera but first time when I was blocking proxies was 1 year, I've now moved on to giving 2 years (most of the time). --Kanonkas(talk) 12:49, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes I've seen & understand that. What I don't know is why you also block for three years - there has to be a reason for variable behaviour & I might learn something. I imagine you cannot be doing it at random? --Herby talk thyme 14:09, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
No I don't do it randomly. I try only to do when the proxy have already been blocked & still is active, or if it have had prior activity & I can see it's a long lasting proxy that is still working. Hope that can help you. Regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 14:15, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Also east718 would like to talk you regarding the range. Seems like he wants to contact you through IRC, he just "bounced" away right now. I think you'll get him, but I told him I don't think you use IRC but you can email him if you want. --Kanonkas(talk) 14:59, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
In the absence of getting blockexempt there is nothing we can do with valid users on the range. --Herby talk thyme 15:05, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
That is indeed a concern but do we have to file some bugzilla request to get that extension? --Kanonkas(talk) 15:07, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Been in longer than the Meta one but that has been actioned :(. However 65,000 IPs cannot be blocked without community consensus. --Herby talk thyme 15:14, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

←That I already know, just ipblock exempt would be nice to have here for many reasons. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:18, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Why so keen on blocking IPs? Why not wait until they do something wrong? We may be missing out on many useful contribs. Who cares how they connect to the site? A vandal's a vandal and a useful contributer's a useful contributer. Rocket000(talk) 20:35, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Category vs. Subcategory

Hi Kanonkas! You undid two days ago my modification [8] where I removed all the categories that, I think, are covered by the sub-category Category:Miley Cyrus.

  1. Of course, these categories are fine, but they are redundant, already included in Category:Miley Cyrus. In my opinion, that's what subcategories are for. Just an example with Category:Music: if you decide to include all the pictures of every possible musician/singer/music-instrument/music-score in the category Category:Music, you will end up with 10,000 (?) mixed pictures in this category, making the latter perfectly unusable.
  2. If you check the other pictures of Miley (Category:Miley Cyrus), you'll notice that your picture is the one and only one that is having such redundant categories.

What do you think about it? Have a nice evening! Vonvon (talk) 19:37, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Feel free to change them as you like. Regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 19:49, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello Kanonkas. I have a question: is there a script for dealing with images nominated for deletion? Or do we delete and close nominations manually? Thanks --Kimse (talk) 07:13, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Works great, thanks Kanonkas. Now I'll go delete some copyvios :) By the way, closed nomination are removed automatically by bots or do we remove them from deletion request page ourselves? --Kimse (talk) 03:41, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Not quite sure what you are asking me, sorry. --Kanonkas(talk) 17:20, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
Sorry for not being clear: page Commons:Deletion requests has lots of open and closed deletion nominations. Who removes the closed ones from this page? Thanks --Kimse (talk) 07:03, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
DRBot will take care of those so just leave them. Rocket000(talk) 08:43, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Open proxies

Given that global blocking is now active might it not be best to leave stewards to deal with open proxies which actually cause trouble now? It is much more effective if done across wikis.

I am sure you have many other things that are worthwhile to do. --Herby talk thyme 14:25, 21 August 2008 (UTC)
