Hello, JosephIWMolto!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:NewTorontoReferendum.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Please source your uploaded images

[edit]

Hello. Thanks for uploading so many great images. However, it is important that you provide whatever references you can when uploading images, so that the public domain status of the images is not brought into question, and others who want to make use of the images can obtain higher resolution versions (where necessary and possible) from the source. Note the difference between this and that. If an image is from the City of Toronto Archives or Toronto Public Library, it will have a reference identifier. Use templates like TPL and COTA-image where you can, in the "source" field of the Information template - these templates allow you to insert the identifier easily. If you come across images in other sources, attributed to these institutions or other archives, but that are missing any reference identifiers, indicate where you got the image -- if you found it on a website, provide the link under "source"...if you scanned it from a book, provide the title, author, page, etc. etc. It's important not only because Commons requires that images be properly sourced and attributed, but you'll be doing a great service to people who are interested in the images you've uploaded, saving them a bit of detective work in the future. Any questions, let me know. It's not something I was initially all that good at myself, but I am getting better.

I also have a question about the manner in which you enter the information about the images you've uploaded. You seem to "hide" some of the information outside the Information template, where it is incredibly easy to miss. For example, in this upload, you hid key information about the location of the house ("Bathurst Street east side, south of Dundas Street West Alexandra Park, Toronto" after the template. Why wouldn't you include it with the rest of the information in the "description" field, consistent with Commons practice? You may have good reason to be doing this, but I'm asking the question because it's not apparent. Let me know. Thanks. --skeezix1000 (talk) 13:54, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have the source information for File:MimicoLakeShoreAtCurve1936.jpg, ::File:LongBranchOpeningStreetcarLakeShore.jpg and File:LongBranchLoop.jpg? --skeezix1000 (talk) 22:52, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If I have put any information in the wrong place it is only because I haven't entirely understood the system. Its good to know somebody's keeping an eye on it and is helping those of us who are new to it (I've only just understood how to place the categories properly, if you or anyone else can help give categories to my earlier downloads I'd appreciate it!). Of the photos I've downloaded the old ones are mostly from the Toronto Public Libraries or the Toronto Archives, the new ones are by me although I don't always remember exactly when I took them. I had just noticed that some other people's uploads of old photos from the same sources had more information so I'll have to go back and try to figure out how that is supposed to be done. I have a huge number of photos on Toronto and I'd like to help put any particularily good\interesting\appropriate ones that can qualify for Wikipedia Commons on appropriate pages.JosephIWMolto (talk) 05:26, 9 June 2009 (UTC) I've tried correcting one of the uploads you mentioned (File:TorontoGzowskiHall.jpg), I've put the appropriate 'tag' in but where does the 'identifier' go?JosephIWMolto (talk) 05:34, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

One other Question, I still have tonnes of notices that my uploads are uncategorised but when I've gone to the gallery view it shows categories beside the photos. Are they categorised or not? --JosephIWMolto (talk) 05:54, 9 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. The procedures take a while to learn, and it is always through trial and error. In respect of File:TorontoGzowskiHall.jpg, I'm not sure why you made these changes (except for the copyediting of the description, which makes perfect sense). We don't need the general PD-Old licensing template, because we have the far more specific and accurate PD-Canada template. As for categories, one should always try and avoid placing images in a general category like Category:Toronto where appropriate subcategories exist -- as discussed at COM:OVERCAT: "The general rule is always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those". So instead of placing this image in the general Toronto category, it is easier for other users to find the image if it is placed in more descriptive subcategories, such as Category:Bathurst Street, Toronto, Category:Houses in Toronto and Category:Toronto in the 1890s. I hope that helps with your category question. If it's an old photo of Toronto, it goes in the appropriate Category:Toronto by decade subcategory, if it's of a building it goes in the appropriate subcat of Category:Buildings and structures in Toronto, etc. It takes a while to get to know the category trees, but it becomes second nature after awhile. If in real doubt, just put an image in the general Toronto category and some one else will eventually subcategorize it.

As for your earlier images that you didn't categorize at the time, just go to the bottom of each image description page to see if someone else has added a category or not.

As for the archival description, it usually goes at the end of the template -- for example, if the item is from the Toronto archives, then the description is "Fonds 345, Series 567, Item 9876", then the template added to the image description should read Fonds 345, Series 567, Item 9876. The TPL template works the same way. If in doubt, leave me a note on my talk page and I will assist. --skeezix1000 (talk) 11:56, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. What's the archival reference for File:TorontoOldTrinityCollegeQueenStW.jpg?--skeezix1000 (talk) 00:12, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Archival references

[edit]

Hi. Sorry to be such a nag, but I just wanted to leave you a note about the archival references for materials from the City of Toronto archives. For images such as File:TorontoHumaneSocietyBuildingOld.jpg, you are including only part of the reference. Every item belongs to a fonds which is very important to cite. Including only the series (or subseries) and the item number is tantamount to giving something a page and chapter number from a book, but neglecting to give them the title or author. For reasons you can well imagine, the full citation (fonds, series, subseries (depending on the collection) and item) is essential. Much thanks. Best regards, --skeezix1000 (talk) 14:49, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JosephIWMolto. I nominated the following pages you created for speedy deletion:

I understand what you tried to achieve (with Google Maps), but it doesn't work and all those pages are listed as pages with content but without an image. I don't have a solution for it now, sorry. Regards, Trijnstel (talk) 16:32, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
