Hello, Ishtar456!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

en couple of things. My user name appears in red, as if I have no account. My user page is empty, as if I don't exist. Photos were deleted off an article I wrote, without warning and people are not responding to my questions about it. The article in question, Steamtown, USA is appearing in red as if it does not exist. What is up?--Ishtar456 (talk) 21:55, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pleas be reassured the en:Steamtown, USA article continues to exist, though if you look at the markup not here. The reason for this is the article exists at wikipedia, and although we are both parts of the wikimedia project, Commons is a separate project from wikipedia. Some of the redlinks are for this reason, including your userpage. Your enwiki user page continues to exist there, but in order to have a page here it has to be first created, many people just add a link to their user pages elsewhere. As to the deleted images, click on the red links to see a rationale of why they were deleted, in the three examples above they were all deleted with "OTRS: Unaccepted or insufficient permission for use on Commons". Commons acts as a repository for all the wikimedia projects and as a source of stock photography to third parties who will honour our licensing conditions, in order to be able to do this we have to be sure that all images here are properly licensed, in the case of the deleted images another admin has cause to believe that the permissions were inadequete, this is to prevent copyright fraud false claims of ownership and should not be taken personally. Think of it this way if you are the creator and author of an image you would not want your work stolen from you or falsly claimed by another would you, what is being done is being done to protect your rights as an author. Commons:Licensing may shed more light on this. Please do not take a slow response to be a cold shoulder, we are a freindly lot really, hope this has helped.--KTo288 (talk) 23:37, 18 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
