Hello, Isarra!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Facebook_like_thumb.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi Isarra,

Just a few small suggestions. Look at this edit and the edit summary for more details and an example:

 • "Wikipedia" is not a valid source, "own work" is
 • Removed uploader from author field (author=author only)
 • Removed redundant "Permission" field (please leave this empty unless there is actually something useful to add here such as OTRS permission requests or something, when special permission info is relevant, this field can be omitted)
 • "__NOTOC__" is not needed anymore

Thanks! –Krinkletalk 15:05, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I blame the bots. But regardless, thanks; that helps. Isarra (talk) 15:27, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Image request[edit]

Hello, Isarra. I would like to make a special request for a Wikimedia logo. Could it be possible for you to create a standard Wikimedia logo [1] (without the text of course) but have a boat of some sort in it? Here is some good looking examples for what would be inside it:

 1. [2]
 2. [3]
 3. [4]
 4. [5]

I would like the colors to incorporate the normal Wikimedia logo colors (Red, green and blue). What ever is easiest is fine with me. Message me on enwiki or on IRC if you have more questions. I completely understand it cannot be done :) Riley Huntley (talk) 21:03, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Chapter logo for Wikimedia Cascadia?[edit]

Hi there. I understand you have worked on chapter logos in the past. If you have the ability and time, would it be possible to upload logos (or other images such as banners, barnstars, etc.) for Wikimedia Cascadia? I am not familiar with how to create similar logos, so I made an appeal for assistance here. If you are not able to help, no worries, just had to ask! (I will likely ask several contributors for assistance, so it might be worth checking to see if someone else has already offered to help or has uploaded images -- thanks!) --Another Believer (talk) 22:23, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Where is this image? Of course the s has no reason not to be italicised when the rest of it is, but I'm really bad at drawing Ses and the reference I had at the time didn't have the s, so yeah, the result was a bit off. A reference would help for fixing that. -— Isarra 18:12, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Logo update request[edit]

If you could create a fresh version of File:WikiFactMine terrible logo.svg, we'd be, well, terribly grateful. It is much admired. The new project, just starting this week, is ScienceSource. Just the text needs changing. Charles Matthews (talk) 15:51, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I echo this. I think WikiFactMine logo is so clever and simple Petermr (talk) 18:09, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Charles Matthews and Petermr: Man, I thought I replied before. Sorry about that. I can definitely do this - main question: you guys want the same colours for the logo? -— Isarra 16:31, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, nevermind, then. -— Isarra 16:55, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, fortunate that the showcase resulted in clarifying this point. More fortunate than that, indeed, given that ScienceSource has need of a designer of skins.

The WikiJournal, currently homed on Wikiversity, really should be read in a skin that is radically decluttered. We shall be hosting some relevant articles from it on the ScienceSource site, which is imminent as a wiki hosted on Labs. We'll be going for a namespace configuration that is unusual (parsoid HTML, need to get ContentHandler to hear and obey). And we are aiming for such a skin for that namespace only.

In other words, make best efforts in MediaWiki to have these articles rendered much more the way we see scientific papers generally should be.

Thoughts? Charles Matthews (talk) 06:47, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Charles Matthews: It looks like you can use the SkinPerNamespace extension to set the skin like that. And for the skin itself, there may be existing skins that'll work, too - this sounds like it might be a good desktop use case for Minerva, or possibly a simplified version of Greystuff, though I can't say I'm actually that familiar with the format you're going for here. How much of the navigation would you still want on hand, and what sort of specific styles would you be going for with that? Do you have a good example of the layout in general at hand? -— Isarra 13:15, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Isarra: On navigation, certainly be minimalist about the usual left-hand sidebar. We'd want categories somewhere; we'd better have some of the boilerplate at the bottom preserved. Keep the logo where it is - "station identification" is important. Maybe keep 6 out of 10 of the usual top-line links, but moved to the top right corner? I'm not well prepared to reply to the rest. Charles Matthews (talk) 15:35, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, As to WikiJournals, the Wikiversity links and logos around the edges is omit-able. The other issue with Minerva_Neue is that the dropdown menues at the top seem to be permanently expanded. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 03:37, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, as pointed out in a twitter post, the mobile view on narrow screens currently has multiple problems (example).
 • needs menu tabs to stack vertically on narrow screens
 • needs all menu tabs to be collapsed in the mobile view (like a heading2 section)
 • needs main div with article text to reflow underneath the infobox
 • indeed the infobox needs to also collapse like a heading_2 section on mobiles

Any ideas on how to fix these (or a suggestion of who else I could pester) would be v. helpful (My MediWiki skills are not great, but I can do a bit)!

Chorinea octauius pic[edit]

Hi Issara,

Eh, sorry if this post is somewhat irrelevant or if I could just have RTFM after asking. Newbie + easily lost spotted.

First of all, congrats for your work :). I especially appreciate your svg of Chorinea octauius. I'm actually biologist, and working on tropical forests, and butterflies, especially Riodinidae, Chrinea octauius' family. I find your illustration delightful, as they are among my favorites!

I would like to use it, if you agree, to make a logo that I would use for a non-profit purpose:

Nature/insect/other-rainforest-related photographs aimed at sharing, primarily on websites such as instagram or flickr (certainly others of that kind, don't know yet), perhaps later on a blog, always with the idea of:

- Showing pictures of stuff people do not often see, e.g. Chorineas (also take a look at Rhetus arcius or Rhetus periander), like insect, animals, plants and landscapes, always related to Tropical Rainforests, biology, vulgarization...

- Attaching texts with valuable info for this content to also have pedagogical potential, and try to sensibilize people to why rainforests are important and interesting.

People often put their name in the middle of the pic to have a recognisable identity when diffusing by third parties. I find this solution unesthetic. A logo with a transparent background, including a pseudonym and a cool butterfly draw (pretty hard as I don't draw well), would do the job with more elegance and identity in case of third party diffusion (already allowed a few academical/association websites to do so).

I wanted to ask you how to proceed: Conditions say that I may reuse your work under two conditions: """"""" attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

share alike – If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one. """"""" https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedia also says that in some cases, better find an agreement or clarify it with the creator and licensor of the content, so here I am for it is unclear whether my case is compatible with this:

QUESTIONS:

- "SHARE ALIKE": The aim of a logo is like to be recognisable, so it can seem restrictive, as opposed to share alike. This is the case, not because I'd want to for commercial purposes or so, but as a consequence of having a pseudonym into the logo... Which keep most normal people to copy-paste it on their own pictures, nope? - "ATTRIBUTION": In this case, how would you require me to give credit for your illustration? On picture caption with a link to your profile, a statement of authorization, a link to the original license? Should I do that for every pic having the logo, or just present the logo once every X time attributing credit to you? - "distribute under the same licence" - idem, how does it have to be mentioned and at which rate? I never did something like that and know virtually nothing.

Please, let me know your opinion.

Best regards,

Nino Riodinino (talk) 05:10, 14 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Riodinino: Agh, I wish I knew. Given it's such a generic image (as in, not made specifically for a logo), I wouldn't recommend using it as a logo just as-is since the meaning will get diluted by any other usage it gets, but if you want to make a more specialised derivative for your thing and use that I could probably just release the attribution requirements for that one? -— Isarra 09:40, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
