Thank you for providing images to the commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a Copyright tag - images without a appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate Categories, so it can be found by others.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. Hallo, vielen Dank für das von dir Commons zur Verfügung gestellte Bild. Bitte gebe beim Hochladen von Bildern in die Commons auch immer eine passende Kategorie an oder füge die Bilder zu einem Artikel (englisch: Gallery) hinzu. Denn Bilder ohne Kategorie bzw. die nicht in Artikeln verlinkt sind können per Suchfunktion schwer gefunden werden ! Ich weis, es ist nicht immer einfach eine Kategorie zu finden. Suche Bilder zu dem Thema. Bei diesen Bildern sollte (hoffentlich) bereits eine Kategorie eingetragen sein. Verwende diese dann - wenn sinnvoll. Um die richtige Kategorie zu finden ist auch das Tool CommonsSense. sehr hilfreich.

Hallo, Ich habe gesehen, dass du -im Gegensatz zu mir - spezialisiert bist auf Categories. Ich habe einiges fotografiert im Val Lumnezia. (Gallery) Was meinst du, könntest du nicht dafür eine eigene Kategorie eröffnen? Wie das geht, ist mir bisher verborgen verblieben... Gruss,--Parpan05 08:20, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- Ich habe Category:Val Lumnezia, Category:Vrin, Category:Vella fabriziert.
- Wenn es von einem Ort viele Bilder gibt, empfiehlt es sich, nur die besten in die Wikipedia zu tun und dafür dort unter Weblinks auf die Commons-Kategorie zu verweisen, z.B. {{Commons|Category:Vrin|Vrin}} --Irmgard 22:58, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.
- This also applies to Image:FranzSchaefer.jpg and other images uploaded from the same website. They are stated to be PD in the information template, but have the tag {{Copyrighted free use}}. I can't find any reference to terms of use on the source site.t. Cnyborg 00:17, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
I was in email contact with them, they offer the pictures on the site for press use and it is ok for them to use them in Wikipedia. Irmgard 08:34, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

I asked them if it was ok to publish them in Wikipedia under GNU or PD and they (bishops's secretary) said yes - they did not specify a GNU license and there doesn't exist a specific one for Switzerland, so I use copyright free use to be on the safe side. --Irmgard 21:52, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
- They need to understand that it's not a question of publishing in Wikipedia, but anywhere. With the free use tag, anyone can use them (just as with a GNU or PD license). The best way to ensure that everything is fine is to use Commons:Email templates. Cnyborg 22:25, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

- I have written Author: User:Irmgard which means in my understanding that I am the author who created the picture, also I have written self-made and indicated the date. It is released under {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}} What the *** do you need else? Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]][[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Please help replace this outdated license[edit]
Hello!
Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.
The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.
