File:German States Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1679 6 Thaler D-LS214.jpg[edit]

Hi Godot13, rather than placing a regular move request, I am addressing you directly as a Commons file mover, numismatist and author of this high-quality photograph of a truly spectacular Löser commemorating the death of John Frederick, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and which I came across while gathering and categorizing coin images related to Brunswick-Lüneburg/Calenberg/Hannover, my own numismatic field of interest. In fact, John Frederick did rule the Principality of Calenberg, but was unrelated to the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, so pls note a few changes already made to the file description and categories here. However, I would also ask you to change the misleading "Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel" name part, either to the more general "Brunswick-Lüneburg" or perhaps "Brunswick-Calenberg-Hannover". Thanks, HReuter (talk) 19:14, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

HReuter- Thanks for the additional information. I will be in Washington D.C. next week at the Smithsonian and would like to confer with them as the name of the file is based on their records and world coins are not my area of expertise. I am however committed to accuracy. If you have any references/citations for this I would like to present it to them so that they can consider making the change in their records. Please give me a week (up to two weeks maximum) to make the name change. I do appreciate you reaching out to me on this. Many thanks, --Godot13 (talk) 06:17, 12 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I had a suspicion the filename might have come from the Smithsonian! Indeed the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg as a whole is notorious for its puzzling subdivisions and reunifications over time, in conjunction with the emerging and terminating lines of the ruling House of Welf. Anyway, regarding the deceased duke in question here, the WP article John Frederick, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg correctly states he "ruled over the Principality of Calenberg, a subdivision of the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, from 1665 until his death" (1679), where Calenberg (=core of the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg as from 1692) is distinct from Brunswick-Wolffenbüttel, as shown by the diagram linked above. As an independent source, I'll email you a link to the relevant page scanned from Welter Die Münzen der Welfen …, the authoritative 1971 work on that numismatic area. – Hope that helps; envying you for your access to such precious coins :-), best, HReuter (talk) 16:46, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Godot13: I notice the finename is still unchanged/misleading -- would you mind if I just place a move request now? Thanks, HReuter (talk) 00:22, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi HReuter- If you tell me exactly how you would like it to read, I will be happy to make the change. --Godot13 (talk) 04:05, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Godot13: To keep the renaming minimal and in line with other non-US coins in c:Category:NNC_coins_uploaded_by_User:Godot13, I would suggest File:German States Brunswick-Lüneburg 1679 6 Thaler D-LS214.jpg or, if you prefer to avoid the umlaut, File:German States Brunswick-Luneburg 1679 6 Thaler D-LS214.jpg.
Btw I have extended this very file description in line with other (privately-owned) coins photographed at our local WP community c:Category:Fotosession im Lokal K (Münzen und Medaillen), in particular c:Category:Funeral_coins and c:Category:Palmbaumtaler – fascinating to see how the palm tree theme of earlier John Frederick coins is taken up here in its ultimate form, i.e. Death destroying the palm tree of Life, year number by year number.
In this context, may I ask you to review/correct/improve my non-native English of this particular file description (e.g. Latin "certum" --> English "certain/sure/safe"?, twice) and of two brief articles the translation of which was triggered by this occasion, viz. en:Palmbaumtaler and en:Funeral coin (term "coin-lord" probably wrong) – Thanks! HReuter (talk) 21:01, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
HReuter- The file has been moved to File:German States Brunswick-Lüneburg 1679 6 Thaler D-LS214.jpg. I will look over the English tomorrow. Thanks again for your research and for pointing this out!--Godot13 (talk) 23:51, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Use of your image of the State Hermitage Museum[edit]

I am Dr. Lew Deitch, a professor of geography who publishes books on Amazon. I have just completed a color version of my book "Visiting Saint Petersburg by Sea, Land or Air." All of my hundreds of images are not of sufficient pixel strength to use for a double front and back cover. I found your image of the Hermitage, which in many ways mirrors many of my own. And being at over 8 megabytes, it was perfect. I have of course given you attribution credit on the back cover, as prescribed by Wikimedia.org. I trust you will be pleased with the exposure.

You may contact me at tomcat consulting@earthlink.net if you wish to learn more about my publications, or comment on my use of your image.

Aerial photos[edit]

Hi Godot, last year you uploaded a lot of aerial photographs of Scotland to the UK part of Wiki Loves Monuments. Looking ahead to this year's competition, I though it might be interesting to highlight these as aerial photos have been quite rare in the past. Would you be interested in preparing a post for the WLM-UK blog about what prompted those pictures (with a few of your favourites illustrating it)? Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2017? Add {{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2017}} to your userpage!

Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 08:05, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Louis d'or[edit]

Hi, I'd like to nominate for FP one or several of your pictures of louis d'or. I calculated here the weight in gold according to several sources I found on the Internet (see en:Talk:Louis d'or#Weight, I think there was an error there). I hope it is OK. I am a bit confused by the different kind of louis (half, double, etc.). Aren't any visual differences between them (except the weight)? Regards, Yann (talk) 11:46, 3 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yann-Congrats! Looking at some of the reference books on gold coins, the weights do seem to vary sometimes by year for any given denomination of Louis d'or. As far as discerning the denomination, you may be correct, as all the denominations at some point shared both the obverse and reverse designs. It may come down to visual inspection and understanding the rough size. I will look into this more... --Godot13 (talk) 22:41, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Permission to use photo[edit]

Hi,

I am a professor of Biology at Glendale Community College. I am revising a set of outlines for the marine biology class that I teach at this college and would like to use your photo of a Chinstrap Penguin, which appears at the following URL: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:South_Shetland-2016-Deception_Island–Chinstrap_penguin_(Pygoscelis_antarctica)_04.jpg

This is a “zero cost textbook” course and the outlines are uploaded into a Canvas page that is only available to the students at no cost. For those students that cannot afford a laptop, our bookstore sells them a black and white printed copy for $7-8. A majority of our students cannot afford expensive textbooks, so I am trying to create the best possible alternative for them.

Thanks in advance.
