2010s.png[edit]

Hey Frood, very sorry about what happened, but I only meant for that 2010s file to be uploaded temporarily as an idea, and I never meant for anone to think I was abusing my account or the images. It was just a plan iw as going to delete from the wiki later. Sorry. --Leavepuckgackle1998 (talk) 05:55, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Frood!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.

Dear Frood,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:32, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Arne Norell[edit]

Hi Frood,

I noticed you requested the deletion of the photos I uploaded of my grandfather Arne Norell on his Wikipedia page. It is correct some of the photos comes from the website, but I am the grandson of Arne Norell and have personally taken most of the photos we use on the Norell Furniture website. And I have personally taken the photos I uploaded to Arne Norell’s Wikipedia site. Therefore I own the copyrights to these photos. Could you please remove your request for deletion or perhaps help me how to prove these photos comes from me and my own work to begin with? Blue46789 (talk) 05:05, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You'll have to release the images under a free license. I'll leave a message on your talk page with information on how to do so. Frood (talk) 05:29, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Never delete redirects[edit]

Hi!

We should never delete redirects unless they are fore a file that was uploaded a few seconds or minutes earlier.

You said at File:Cedar rapids Iowa 2.jpg that it was not used. Did you check all pages on the internet and every book, magazine etc ever printet since the file was uploaded? No of course not. That's impossible. :-)

Wikimedia Commons is not just for Wikipedia it is for everyone so you never know where the photos are used. If a school book from some small city in Africa use the photo and said they got it from <URL> then you break the line if you delete the redirect. --MGA73 (talk) 06:24, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, that makes sense! I didn't think of it that way - thanks! Frood (talk) 01:14, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GemCar Images[edit]

I got a message that the pictures I added on the Gem - Car Software are considered copyright violation because they're part of the gem-car's webpage. How that is acceptable if I work at Gem-Car and the owner knows about it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Radost Babadzhanova (talk • contribs)

@Radost Babadzhanova: In that case, there's a couple problems - first of all, the images would need to be released under a free license. For at least one of them, that's not possible because it's a stock photo, and you don't own the rights to it in the first place. For the ones that you (or the company) does own the rights to, you'll have to submit permission to OTRS. Second, the images are borderline spam, and likely fall outside the scope of the project. I'd encourage you to read both of the pages I linked for more information. Frood (talk) 01:45, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
