Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you.

Removal of interlanguage links[edit]

Hello, I've noticed several of your edits to categories (for example, Category:Audio coding formats, Category:Ubuntu variants...) where you removed interlanguage links. Please don't manually remove these links, unless you also add the corresponding association to Wikidata. If your interface and settings look like mine do, you can add this association using the "Add links" button in the sidebar when looking at a category, beneath all the rest of the links in the sidebar. If you don't do this, but still remove them, bots will not be able to process these associations and correctly convert this older method of metadata linking. Thanks, djr13 (talk) 15:57, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to. I always put a link on Wikidata, so those relations should not be lost. But there seems to be some confusion on how to link Commons stuff from Wikidata. There's two different ways and so far no one was able to give me definitive answers on why there are two and what exactly the role of each is. The "Add links" button does not work. It always complains that I first have to log into Wikidata, only for Wikidata to tell me that I'm already logged in. I was told by Wikidata folks that it is a known problem with OAuth and being worked on.--Flugaal (talk) 16:33, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yeah, I have similar annoying login problems, though for me it does allow me to use the tool from Commons as long as I manually log into Wikidata first (it's not the only sister wiki that does this to me...).
  • As far as what page to link, if there are already the old styled interlanguage links, you can just use whatever these links already indicate. They can be changed later if something is more appropriate, much easier than if the old links are simply deleted from Commons.
  • Sometimes the list of languages have changed on their respective language-wikis, and complicated conflicts can arise. These can be a pain to resolve, so I suggest letting a bot decide which languages are correct or not, and just not removing the interlanguage links yourself. If you add the association to Wikidata, a bot will eventually remove the duplicates and leave the ones it is unsure of.
  • In general, associating Wikipedia categories with Commons categories is preferred, and Wikipedia articles with Commons galleries. If neither of these pairs exist, and you only have a Wikipedia article and a Commons category, then these should be associated.
  • As to whether to use the "Wikimedia Commons category" /attribute/ or the "other wikis" section, the answer is, both. To me, the "other wikis" one is more important, because it's the one that Commons relies on when it populates the sidebar. djr13 (talk) 22:02, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your last point refers to a question I'm actually having. Why this redundancy? Do we need both, because we don't do interwiki linking by some standard on what to link in what case, in which case they could be generated automatically based on some systematically organized data and the linking rule you were talking about, but instead we explicitly link some pages based on whatever someone feels to be an appropriate reasoning?

I was first using only the sitelinks until i discovered the statements which seemed to be the more specific thing.--Flugaal (talk) 08:31, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There are standards of what to link, but they're all necessarily open to interpretation, because there isn't a perfect 1:1 match between Wikipedia content and Commons content. As for why there's two different ways of associating to Commons, I don't know, I'm sure someone realizes the redundancy there, but it still exists so far. Also, I've realized when trying to add the associations to Wikidata, that the two specific examples that I linked in the original post here, these are complicated ones where you didn't do much wrong if anything. djr13 (talk) 18:50, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think at least for the Ubuntu variants I removed the link(s) on purpose because there was a more fitting category to link with the en:Category:Ubuntu derivatives and I linked those instead. I also linked to that other Commons category using a "see also" link.--Flugaal (talk) 12:47, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Regenerating/replacing FSsongmetal2-Opus-exp7.20120823-sweep.png[edit]

The image in question

You made a cool spectrogram image comparing the frequency response of Opus at different bitrates. It is used on many pages about Opus, but Opus's frequency response behaviour at lower bitrates has changed a lot (as of Opus 1.3), so I think it might be cool to regenerate this image. Do you have a script or some such to generate this, or could you describe how exactly you made it? I'm guessing you used SoX to make the spectrograms but beyond that I'm not sure.

Cheers! :- ) Aaron Muir Hamilton <aaron@correspondwith.me> (talk) 00:45, 13 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

So i spammed Commons with tons of my intermediary files, exactly for cases like this, but i forgot to just post my command line? What have i been thinking?.. :-/
Trying to remember, i think it was indeed sox. I must have used the -r option to leave out the legend and axis, set custom dimensions -x 5000 -y 1000, and downmixed somehow (e.g. in sox, using remix 1,2) or, in case of Opus, just omitted one channel because (naive) downmixing of Opus files from back then ends in some degree of disaster because important parts of the signal would cancel out (so rather e.g. remix 2).
Then i remember maximizing contrast in GIMP - per channel, i think. But i guess sox must have changed coloring since (and/or maybe introduced paletted 256-colors output?) because when i try it now i get something slightly different...
Then i cropped and stacked the parts in GIMP and overlayed the dotted green lines at the boundaries.
(I guess i should go back and post some plausible sox commandline to all those image descriptions...)--Flugaal (talk) 00:28, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
