First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Please give some thought to writing a good description of uploaded images. This ensures that they can be used. Zimbabwe Coat of Arms[edit]

Hi there. I noticed you uploaded a vector version of the Zimbabwe COA. It looks great. I made one or two minor fixes and there are still some errors. I have placed the image on the Graphics Lab page for fixing. You can see its entry here. Mangwanani 18:48, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To be fair my school book is a very bad drawing. The correct version of the Zimbabwe Bird - any Zimbabwe Bird - is the SVG version I have inserted. It is pretty much the usual version. There are slight differences in some versions and this is usually the bit under the wing. It is, however, zig-zag form not balls on the design (see the flag of Zimbabwe). Rhodesia[edit]

Hi there. Is there a chance of you being able to create a Rhodesian Coat of Arms in svg in the same way as you created the Zimbabwean one? There is one which has been attempted but it is not very clear Image:Rhodesian coat of arms Sag.svg. I have added some bits to try and make it clearer but it still looks pants. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

You have uploaded the map "Ruanda prov 2005 de.svg" in the past and the text isn't depicted in the correct way. Ruanda 2007 de.svg[edit]

I have made some changes on the file you worked on in the past: File:Ruanda 2007 de.svg. I raised the scale one layer so that it can be seen. Then I encountered another problem. Either you copied and pasted text into Inkscape leading to some weird behaviour. Or you enlarged the text. Or something else. I don't know. To make this a great map you will have to change the degrees that are around the map and the text in the upper left corner. If you do that, then all problems will disappear. But there is most certainly no librsvg-bug. Wereldburger758 (talk) 06:02, 1 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
