There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Wäre nett, wenn du sie zumindest teilweise neu hochlädst, denn du kannst sie anpassen und Vorlage Badname verwenden. Dann werden die alten besonders schnell gelöscht. Im übrigen schlage ich folgende Namenskonvention vor:

Wichtigste ID - Quelle - Genaueres Das wäre dann z.B.:
NGC_0123_ESO.jpg
NGC 123 von ESO, Monitorgröße
NGC_0123_ESO_XXL.jpg
NGC 123 von ESO, sehr groß (HiRes)
NGC_0123_2MASS.jpg
2MASS-Bild
MESSIER_009_HST.jpg
Messier 9, vom HST, Monitorgröße
NGC_1234_GALEX.jpg

Cäsium137 (T.) 11:02, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake with NGC 214[edit]

Hi, the file uploaded by you (NGC 214 folder): NGC214-hst-R814G606B435.jpg is definitely not showing NGC 214 but NGC 201. You can check it HERE for example. However I'm not sure about the 2nd picture from the same folder: NGC201-hst-R190G606B160.jpg because it's not good quality, different filters have been used and not entire galaxy is shown. Can you check both files please, rename if necessary and move to correct folder to avoid confusion? Greetings, and thanks for uploading so many Hubble pictures :) Pikador (talk) 17:47, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for spotting this. I've cleaned it up according your suggestion and created a new picture of NGC 214: File:NGC 214 hst 08597 05 G606.png and corrected the links int he different wikis.

NGC 2174[edit]

Hi. Most pictures in Category:NGC 2174: for example Heic1406a.tif and NGC 2174.tiff (renamed today into Fragment of NGC 2175.tiff) are actually parts of NGC 2175 and not NGC 2174. Hubble site made mistake with description and many sites (APOD) have the same mistake. Correct identification (NGC 2174 and NGC 2175) is here and here. NGC 2175 is big nebulae while NGC 2174 is just small fragment of NGC 2175 but different than fragment shown on these pictures.

I made screenshot of NGC 2175. NGC 2174 is on top in white square, while on bottom it is a fragment which is shown on Hubble pictures. Maybe you could modify this picture: Heic1406d-crop.png (or add this picture to Commons: http://www.spacetelescope.org/static/archives/images/screen/heic1406b.jpg where NGC 2174 is visible better - its stars are much brighter on this picture) to show the real NGC 2174 - maybe just use square or circle and insert NGC 2174 inscription?

Best regards Pikador (talk) 08:32, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I do not have made further investigations - feel free to correct it, if there is a mistake. --11:56, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Request to add a picture[edit]

I can see you add a lot of pictures from Mount Lemmon Sky Center. As you have so much experience in adding pictures to Commons could you please add another one? http://skycenter.arizona.edu/gallery/Nebulae/NGC6590

There are 3 NGC/IC objects on this picture: big red nebula is IC 1284, small blue left - NGC 6595 (alternative name NGC 6590, it's nebula with open cluster), small blue right - NGC 6589. Identification according to http://cseligman.com/text/atlas.htm , The NGC/IC Project, Wolfgang Steinicke.

File:NGC 6393 hst 05479 606.png[edit]

Hi, the galaxy on this picture is usually identified as NGC 6394 (by modern sources), although there is some confusion with identification due to historical reasons (Swift's positions of NGC 6393 and NGC 6394 discovered by him on the same night are not exact) and some sources incorrectly identify these galaxies reversely. Anyway this galaxy is described here. You can also check positions at Hubble Legacy Archive (which correctly identified this galaxy as NGC 6394), SEDS.org, NGC/IC Project to confirm identification. So this file should be renamed. Greetings. Pikador (talk) 09:01, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've checked simbad and wikisky and tr:wikipedia - so I am unsure. I you like to fix it, go ahead but keep all wikis aligned. BR, --Fabian RRRR (talk) 16:00, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Both SIMBAD an WikiSky got it wrong (it's not unusual, they have many errors). SIMBAD has two different entries - NGC 6393 and NGC 6394 although they both show the same galaxy. Almost all wikis NGC articles made by bots are based on SEDS Revised NGC and IC Catalog and galaxy shown on your Hubble picture is identified as NGC 6394 there. This identification seems reasonable since description in NGC catalogue says NGC 6394 is northern and NGC 6393 southern (Wikisky has wrong reversed identification). So your today NGC 6393 article on german wiki is wrong too and it is describing NGC 6394 actually. NGC 6393 picture is here. NASA/IPAC EXTRAGALACTIC DATABASE has correct identificacion too. SDSS images[edit]

Hi, I'd like to inform you, that Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) changed their image use policy recently. See discussion here and here. Since you uploaded many HST images I thought it would be good to let you know about this. Older DSS survey is another story, those images are still copyrighted. Greetings Pikador (talk) 08:18, 9 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pikador,
thanks for the information. This are very good news. The quality of the sdss images is big improvement over other free surveys.
Best regards, --Fabian RRRR (talk) 05:39, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for adding images. I noticed you added a wrong image of NGC 4. In fact NGC 4 looks more like an edge-on spiral galaxy, see here. It used to be identified as PGC 620 (this is the galaxy on your image) by some databases, like SIMBAD, but almost all of them already corrected that error (including SIMBAD). There are many discrepancies in astronomical databases concerning identification of NGC/IC objects due to poor data and many errors in original NGC/IC catalogues. Prof. Seligman is updating his database very often in cooperation with other astronomers and I think his site is best source for identification at the moment. Also Mr Wolfgang Steinicke is working on identification of NGC/IC objects, but his database is just Excel file with basic info. So before adding any image to commons better check in different sources (Seligman, SIMBAD, NED) if this is the correct object. Sometimes if identification of an object is doubtful better use PGC number in case of galaxies to avoid confusion. Greetings, and keep up a good work. Pikador (talk) 08:22, 31 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for spotting this. I've corrected the image. Best regards, --Fabian RRRR (talk) 20:57, 3 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • I found NGC 296 article on German wiki is total mess - because of misidentification in SIMBAD it mixes data from 2 different galaxies. I also renamed NGC296 - SDSS DR14.png image because it points to that misidentified galaxy. Correct PGC number is PGC 3260 and correct image is NGC 0296 SDSS.jpg. Can you correct that article? See prof. Seligman's site for more details. Pikador (talk) 09:50, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you check if NGC number of this galaxy is correct? I checked in Hubble Legacy Archive, but I see that NGC 1270 looks like elliptical, not similar to your image. It is disc galaxy on your image. Pikador (talk) 14:49, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pikador,
It's a feature around the core of some (or all?) elliptical galaxies. It can be seen by darkening the image.

File:NGC3436 - SDSS DR14.png[edit]

It's an incorrect picture. Most catalogues identify NGC 3436 as PGC 32633 (CGCG 038-039) (http://spider.seds.org/ngc/revngcic.cgi?NGC+3436 http://ned.ipac.caltech.edu/cgi-bin/nph-objsearch?objname=NGC+3436 http://leda.univ-lyon1.fr/ledacat.cgi?o=ngc%203436) and according to Harold Corwin (http://haroldcorwin.net/ngcic/ngcnotes.all) this identification is certain because discoverer left a sketch which clearly points to that galaxy. SIMBAD incorrectly identifies NGC 3436 as PGC 31905 which is also different galaxy than the one on your picture. Pikador (talk) 07:21, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

SDSS DR14[edit]

Hello.
What mean colors in the images? It should be documented.

As a note of secondary importance, licensing should be specified via templates. Pushing such details as Email addresses of persons into file description pages directly is inappropriate. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 12:09, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
most of astronomical images are false color. Details can be found here: https://www.sdss.org/dr14/imaging/jpg-images-on-skyserver/
I am not shure whether it is a star or Halpha region.
I can change the text for future uploads, please make a suggestion.
If you provide a template, I can include it - the email results from a citation of the web site.

I tried to upload v:File:Camera filters-300x274.png to File:SDSS Camera filters for JPG -300x274.png but Special:UploadWizard would not allow it claiming the two are identical which they are not. Hi, Fabian RRRR. You aren't images I have requested.

So I decided to show what images I have requested. Please, go to the page using this link [[6]]. When you arrive on page, you will see the image of only NGC 1375. Please try to add this image as soon as possible, because it is my top priority.

Also, you show me image of NGC 1326, no of PGC 12783 or NGC 1326A. NGC 1326A is a galaxy on the second requested image. The link is [[7]]. When you arrived to page, go below and find PGC 12783. Then, do not add first image of PGC 12783, but second (HST) image. This is also top priority image, so try to add this image also as soon as possible.

Also, when you add images, please confirm this and left message of confirmation on my page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Space2006 (talk • contribs) 11:47, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

editing foreign comments[edit]

Regarding your suggestion: Special:Diff/410844654

  • I changed your post in Special:Diff/410792561, since it misses a signature/timestamp, you can change that by adding {{Unsigned}}
  • I do not think that a single post, by a single user may contain several {{Vd}}. If you do think differently you can undo my edit in Special:Diff/410755544, regarding your own posts.

Remember: If someone decides over the Image, the person considers how reliable and uncommitted the refferies are.

So if I decide over the image: (which I could)

Adding several {{Vd}} in a single post does imho neither look experienced nor very competent.

If you whish you can undo my edit regarding your post on your own, I will keep it this way. I personally still think my edits of your post are correct. If you think I'm wrong and I should appologize and undo it. We can disscuss it e.g. at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems, to get other opinions.

PS: If I currently would decide over the given arguments, I would decide (week) keep.

Use of sh2-216 Ha extract?[edit]

Hi, I see that you used an image I created of sh2-216 at (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Sh2-216_H_alpha.jpg&oldid=675885293) by extracting the Ha? But I have the original Ha data image which is here: https://www.astrobin.com/dfmz8d/C/#r0 which IMO is better (and genuine) and I can provide it for without the water mark if you wish. Please contact me at me@ram.org if you are interested.

This is the original colour sh2-216 image I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sh2-216_c_lsho_1218m%2B812m%2B903m_2933m_49h.jpg Ram samudrala (talk) 10:36, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ram samudrala,
Many thanks for the offer - and many thanks for already giving the original image to wikipedia, in the first place.
In fact, the title of my "Halpha" extract is somehow misleading, and I presented it in the german wikipedia article simply as "line filter" image. I simply hesitated to present your colored image in the infobox, because it looks a little bit surrealistic, to different to the other colorizations of the other planetary nebula. I would be very happy, if we have a colored version with a scheme roughly aligend to other planetary nebulas. I try to extract something like this from your colored image, but did not get it to work, so I ended up with the monochrome image.
The Halpha image from you would be a great gift to wikipedia, if possible with an additional OIII image so I would to combine them to a colored image, or - i am not very skilled at this - i you could provide a colored image with multiple filters, somehow more "realistic" colored, I would be happy to include this in the article.
Best regards, --Fabian RRRR (talk) 10:30, 3 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Fabian, I have uploaded the Ha, O3, and S2 data. I also created a more "muted" colour image combining this data. This removes all the greens but both colour images (this one and the one you found surrealistic) are just a standard combination of the data and SCNR in Pixinsight. The original image was tweaked a bit in terms of saturation to make it more psychedelic to differentiate it from all other efforts but I am not sure this image is less so but it is standard Hubble palette processing. Either way I hope you find it useful. The monochrome data is the real data (i.e., no false colour). I hope you find some/all of this useful.

Hi Ram samudrala,
It looks great! Many Thanks for your effort and great contribution. The original image was already appreciated by the wikipedia community but for me this new image values even higher. I've already updated the article.
Best regards, --Fabian RRRR (talk) 10:07, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
PS.:Could it be that the OIII extract is overexposed, saturated - in case, do you have a different dataset at hand? Best regards, --Fabian RRRR (talk) 21:51, 8 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great!
The part in the nebula itself is the raw data at unity gain though a bit processed - if I didn't do that, the O3 data would be very faint (aside from the upper left quadrant; there's O3 throughout the nebula) so I had to use masks: the region that is the planetary nebula is left alone - it is the background that I darkened using a mask, this is pretty standard for relatively faint O3 data, otherwise the Ha data would overwhelm it. If you used the original O3 without any processing the blues would be non-existent and it would look all red/orange. Processing O3 is one of the trickiest things to do with narrowband images: most images don't do a good job of it to highlight it IMO. A lot of the images of sh2-216 (even in narrowband) looks red only for this reason. You have to first collect a lot of data (15+ hours in this case) and then use various techniques to highlight it. Category discussion warning

NGC 5236 has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Hubble Chronicles Brightening of Ring around Supernova 1987A (1994-2016 - crop, small).gif. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
