Wikimedia Commonplace

Hi Dozenist. Welcome to the Commons! I notice you've been uploading a lot of photos. That's wonderful! I just want to point out that your work isn't done once the photo is uploaded. We need as much information as possible about each photo, including what it depicts and where and when it was taken. Also, many of your categories need to be fixed. For example, there is no Category:TN, and there never will be. You need to go through and change it to Category:Tennessee. I'm sure there are other examples. Hey, it was good to get a welcome message from you. I am absolutely certain the catagories need to be fixed on some photos I uploaded last nite. I have contributed other pictures before, but they were one at a time and were done directly in the internet browser. Last nite, on the other hand, I was using a program (is it called wikimedia commonplace??) to help me upload huge bulks of pictures and, as I am sure you would know, writing a lot of text for all of them at one time can get very tiresome. I figured I can go back to fill in more information if I need to. Some catagories (for example, any of the two word catagories) I did not know how the program would interpret them. I will go back and help fix some of them, and I am sure there will be other helping me too. Other catagories, such as the one named "Changing of the Peruvian National Guards", I thought would be appropriate to be created because of the number of photos and its importance. I'm glad you're planning to do some work categorizing your photos! Sometimes we get people who don't bother to do that final, important step. I definitely approve of Category:Changing of the Peruvian National Guards. It would be good if you could add more information about it at the category page. dbenbenn | talk 19:06, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

copyright question

hi dozenist, my name is Seamus O'Bric and i'm a science teacher in Ireland. of about 750 secondary schools in Ireland maybe 50 are Irish speaking, and there is no irish science text book, which is why i wrote one...the only thing is i need nice pretty pictures to fill it with now...i saw you have some lovely pictures of incisors and molars on wikimedia commons, and read the copyright controls, but still aint too sure what i should do to abide by these rules. i do intend to print the text book commercially to distribute nationwide, so all i need to know is, can i use your images andf what do i need to do? the pictures will not be place on any back front outside or inside cover thanx seamus

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Picture G. V. Black & F. S. McKay

Hi Dozenist,

I'm pretty sure the picture labelled as 'Dr. G.V. Black and Dr. McKay studying "Colorado Brown Stain"' doesn't show these two dentists. The photo is taken from "History of dentistry in Colorado" by William A. Douglas (1959; pg. 199). The photo was taken by McKay (who is not shown therefore) and shows Dr. Black together with two Colorado Springs dentists, Drs. Isaac Burton and F. Y. Wilson, who worked with McKay on the "mottled teeth" problem. A woman also shown on the right side of the original picture has been cut out partially in the version you uploaded to Wikipedia. - Just for your information - -- Trendley (talk) 20:08, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
