THE COLLECTION OF COINS. The collection of coins was begun in 1857 — a boy's fancy — ^and became in later years a recreation from other pursuits. It has socontinued, beingtaken up and dropped again many times

all save the oriental coins having been disposed of long ago. The foundation of the present collection was a number of coins found in a desk belonging to the collector'sfather, who brought them home from Batavia and Canton — not very many in all, but bi-inging with them the sentimental interest which all old-time-connected Salemites have for the Far East. The collection as it has taken form is intended to fully repre- sent China and, fairly so, thecountries immediately sur- rounding it

to illustrate the coinage of all countries where oriental inscriptions are found upon the coins, and, incidentally, the places and isles of the sea where Salem ships touched on their eastern voyages and which were familiar names in the counting rooms of the Salem mer- chants and in so many Salem homes. Within this scope it is hoped to improve and enlarge the collectionas opportunity offers. Just at present important additionsare being made to the ancient coinsof China. Many parts of the collection are thought already to be sufficiently full for the purpose intended and these groups will not be enlarged, only those of the Far East being much increased. The cabinet containing the collection is so planned that any drawer from among the one hundred and fifty which the base contains may be placed in the (7)

A number of oriental coins in the Essex Institute collection, including those re- ceived from the Salem East India Marine Society, havebeen incorporated in thiscollection. The arrangement of thecoins inthis list necessarily differs somewhat from the catalog of the books, being much more subdivided. The collection of coins may be summarized as follows

Corean Coin Charms and Amulets

Collectors of Corean Coin Charms and Amulets will no doubt wonder why a work dealing with such an interesting subject has not been undertaken before.Chinese charms and amulets have received their full share of attention both from native and foreign authors.

'Corean Coin Charms and Amulets' is a book introduced by Jun Kobayagawa company in Japan in 1910 with photos of old coins and indoor decorations.

According to each type of pattern, there are about 150 paintings, insects, fish and fish depending on their shapes, and separated by characteristic.

Unfortunately, it provides quite a list of Japanese and Vietnamese illustrations, but nothing Korean.

This is the first book in English that was introduced about the history of numismatic in Korea 100 years ago.

"The charm of Korea's coin is often decorated with colorful or bright colo{U}rs." the author said.

- Book description.

Public domain book, yet for whatever reason all eBook variants of it are paid... Something really odd is going on here, the works by this author should all be in the public domain, but for whatever reason all of his works on Korea (Corea) and Siam seem to be sold, his book on Siamese porcelain tokens seem to even cost twice as much. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:32, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Corean Coin Charms and Amulets (Cover-only)

While this book is written by David (Christopher?) Hartill, the initial description reads: "Book Description [16:19:22] Jadles (Jamie): Early Japanese Coins is an up-to-date catalogue of pre-Meiji copper, gold and silver coins. As well as official issues, the often decorative provincial issues are covered. A selection of the intriguing Japanese amulets known as E-sen is also included. It replaces Munro and other western works. It is designed to be used both by advanced collectors who have some knowledge of characters, and beginners who will find the layout easy to follow and will quickly gain a knowledge of this coinage. It draws on historical, as well as the latest western and Japanese numismatic sources, and describes the circumstances under which many of the coins were issued and used. Guides to the Japanese language are given, and maps and lists of era names and rulers add to the background information." This books actually has a somewhat minor section on E-sen, it's quite interestting that this book has never become "a standard reference piece" like all of Hartill's other books, this is likely due to the fact that the Japanese numismatic market is too expansive to compete in as a non-Japanese. "There is a description of how the coins were made, illustrated from a contemporary document. A Finding Guide is provided for the difficult Kanei Tsuho series, which will enable these coins to be readily attributed from the differences in their calligraphy. A rarity guide, linked to an approximate value, is provided for each coin. The author has been studying and collecting Far Eastern coins for over fifty years, and has also written the prize winning Cast Chinese Coins, and the definitive Qing Cash." While David Hartill's other books are here known as "definitive" and "prize winning", his Early Japanese coins isn't received as such, despite actually being quite useful for Non-Japanese people.
