First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Deletion request Image:IMG 0211.JPG][edit]

Hi, some time ago, you requested Image:IMG 0211.JPG to be deleted. This hasn't been done as the deletion request was incomplete. Can you fix the request by adding a reason and fill the template? thanks and kind regards. Deadstar 15:10, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder! I've uploaded the image with another name and everything should be under control now :) –Dilaudid 16:44, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:LocationGreaterHelsinki.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Siebrand 14:12, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I've now added the forgotten licence tag. –Dilaudid 16:47, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your expertise is needed[edit]

When people know everything and perhaps are wasting their efforts condescending to a person who doesn't really need the condescension, I think that a good project for an expert is probably the best remedy.

The plant people are attempting to upload images that have been embedded into pdf. They need a know-it-all to assist them. See and share the love.

About geocoding[edit]

Thank you for adding the coordinates in the description of your recent images. I made some adjustments for a pair of them ([1] [2]) because here in Commons the coordinates should record the location of the camera as accurately as possible and indicate the direction the camera was pointing at (for the details see Commons:Geocoding). FYI in Finland you can identify the location very accurately by using Citizen's MapSite as there is now (at least nearly) complete cover of large scale aerial images (for example [3]). --AB (talk) 20:55, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

QI[edit]

The "information noise" has hinted to me on several occasions that they play that dokodu (or whatever it is) game with one or all of these contests. I don't have enough interest to learn that game to determine if they even can play it with QI and the information noise seems to mostly tell untruths lately.

I declined that flare burn mark today so that the pine tree with the flare on it can be handled without that image on the same page.

Meanwhile, this is a real life thing about the images that go into these things (regardless of the games and the weird criticism and all of the other stuff) I was looking at a magazine that was a special printing and special beautiful images were promised and even a special binding (Time/Life Pub) and it was painful to look at. Every single image in the publication was noisy, beyond film grain and the digitally altered ones that I saw in my quick look seemed like they had been done by 10 year olds. I have no idea if they were working with scans of old magazines or what could have caused the problems that I saw there. There have been some simply beautiful images uploaded here and my eyes are extremely spoiled from that. It is not a bad way to be spoiled; the access is not limited to only a few or only a certain class -- maybe it is limited to people over a certain age due to some of the content here. It is not a bad way to be spoiled.

Working together to make something work the way it should work should also be fun; maybe that can happen there and other places similar. Like a public park with swingsets and slides; it is nice that they get used for their purpose little kids on swings and sliding and rental wiki-user nicks go back to Flickr where adults can play games like that with their "swing sets" or whatever. -- carol (talk) 07:17, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I honestly can't see the blur, if the last upload didn't fix it. Can you give the approximate pixel coordinates? Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:09, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The blur I discern is on the man's nose level at about 7224, 3572 – 7759, 3619 (x1, y1 – x2, y2 from top left corner). I wouldn't complain this much if it weren't a focus part of the etching... :) –Dilaudid 21:19, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Koordinaateista taas[edit]

Turun hautausmaalla kuvatun oravakuvan koordinaatit osoittivat Pohjois-Norjaan [4].

Kansalaisen karttapaikan linkki, jossa haluttu koordinaattipiste on osoitettu). Huh, hengästyttävää. Toivottavasti tästä saadaan helpompaa ja vähemmän virhealtista jokin kaunis päivä :) Kiitos korjauksista! –Dilaudid 22:04, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I need your advice[edit]

I found you because I enjoy your photos, and because you are able to communicate in English and Spanish. I am from Brasil, but long ago forgot most of the Portuguese and other languages, as I continued to live in the United States. I need advice. I upload photos of musicians because I edit biography articles about them in the en.Wiki. Sometimes I add the photos to other language wikis: the pt.wiki, es.wiki, etc. My memory of the languages is so bad, that I wonder if you might help me with some basic information so when I introduce myself on the Userpage in es.Wiki in Spanish, that people will understand in Spanish what I do, and that I do not know much of the language. Can you help me? Also, my talk page here, my user page here on Wikimedia Commons never mentions anything but how bad I am with Commons. If you look at my userpage in en.Wikipedia, you will find that I work hard in both editing new articles, and cleaning up those that other people leave behind in a mess. I have uploaded over 1,500 photos to the Wikipedia using email to contact photographers to ask them to remove their copyright on the photos, and use a Creative Commons license instead. I would like to place a list here on this userpage, and archive everything else here. I want to start fresh. The photos I have uploaded are listed mostly here: [6] It is only a list of all the musicians whose photos I uploaded and placed in the en.Wikipedia. I don't know how to do that here, since most of their names are not in catgories, and would like your advice. My userpage in en.Wiki is here: [7] or User:Leahtwosaints. Can you help me? I would like to write an introduction for the es.Wiki, and others, just to tell them I do not speak the language well enough, but that I am happy to help with photos for the musician's articles. Maybe you might be able to compose the introduction? I just need help and really do not know editors here or even Administrators. Last, I know I uploaded some really great photos, but do not know how to ask for advice on whether they are good enough to be featured either in Commons sometime or in the en.Wiki. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 23:00, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Dilaudid,

I just changed the ID of your image File:Cirsium palustre Martinmäki.jpg from Cirsium palustre to Cirsium arvense. Cirsium palustre has got winged stems (including lots of prickles, see e.g. File:Cirsium palustre01.jpg), darker purple flowers and leaves with hairs on the upper side. So all of this does not match, but your image matches Cirsium arvense very nicely. Please check whether I got the Finnish part of the name correctly from Finnish Wikipedia. By the way: Cirsium arvense is also frequently full of aphids (and therefore ladybugs feeding on them) in my area. Thank you and best regards -- Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 07:40, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, very perceptive! The translation, too, is perfectly correct. It so happens that I have plenty of pictures of flora I haven't been able to identify myself, and thus haven't uploaded here – perhaps we could join forces and you could help me label them within some timeframe? Thanks again. –Dilaudid 19:49, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am willing to help you if I can. I am just a botanical amateur and I have never been to Scandinavia. I know those flowers best which I found in the wild, usually somewhere in Germany, Austria, Switzerland or in the Italian Alps. Nevertheless, if you do not forget to mention in which country/area you found your plants, I still might be able to name some of them. Even though I have not got a flora of Finland or Scandinavia, I have got a copy of the "Flora Europaea", which should be usually sufficient to check for possibly lookalikes. Best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 20:21, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm new[edit]

Copyright and use of images[edit]

Hi Dilaudid,

I'm contacting you about the use of your images in my website (www.dixon.es).

I've got to admit that the different copyright and licensing agreements under which fotos are made available via Wikicommons seem a bit of a labyrinth to me, hence my contacting you directly.

If you have a look at the website you'll see that I've added a couple of your images ("https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=4260142"/"https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=4220490") to a slider on the home page.

I'm not a programmer, and fighting with websites is a real trial for me. However, I've got this far, and I'd like to know how you'd like me to proceed with a credit (assuming that you're ok about my using the foto in the first place, of course).

I did initially add a credit to the foto itself, but it looked really poor in the standard slider that I've used, so I removed it and added a "Credits" link on the main menu, with intention of listing all the fotos that I've used along with the corresponding credit and link.

So, before I go ahead, I'd like to have your feedback about the idea, and of course about the use of your foto.

Look forward to hearing from you
