How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Clarification on your Comment on Poster Image upload

Hi! You left me a note that the permissions for the movie poster I uploaded (File:The Take Out Move - Movie Poster (Trees).jpg) were not done properly. I'm quite new to Wikipedia editing, so I want to make sure I'm doing everything right.

Question - The creator of the poster wants it uploaded so it can be used on the Wikipedia page for the film, but they don't want to make it available for everyone to use however they want (including commercial use, etc) under Creative Commons, since it's a copyrighted movie poster made for a specific movie.

I just looked, and the poster for the first Harry Potter film is shown on that movie's wikipedia page. But there's no way Warner Brothers would just allow their poster of one of their most valuable properties to suddenly be available for everyone in the world to use commercially under Creative Commons. In fact, I saw that at the bottom of the image page it says "This is a poster for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The poster art copyright is believed to belong to the distributor of the film, the publisher, Warner Bros., or the graphic artist."

How can I help upload this Take Out Move poster so that it can be used on that film's Wikipedia page, but not so that the copyrighted poster is suddenly released to the world under Creative Commons?

Thanks!

Just read COM:L. You can only upload content that is freely licensed or in the public domain. Fair use media files are explicitly not allowed on Wikimedia Commons. --Didym (talk) 13:04, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok thanks. So how do big movies like HARRY POTTER or JAMES BOND have their movie posters on Wikipedia if the comments (as I copied above) state that the poster is copyrighted -- and there's no way that the poster for a Harry Potter movie would actually be considered freely licensed to the public? Is someone just uploading the image and saying it's freely licensed (even though that's probably not legally the case in the eyes of Warner Brothers who owns the films)? WarrenGOut (talk) 04:57, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
Some projects might have different policies for local uploads, but there is no way of having such files on Commons. --Didym (talk) 20:13, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. So by "local uploads" does that mean you can upload an image file to be used on one wikipedia page without uploading it to commons? That would be ideal. They only want the film's poster used on the film's page, they don't really want it in Commons -- but they though you have to upload it to commons in order to be able to use it on a wikipedia page. Is there a way to use it on just the wikipedia page, without Commons?. WarrenGOut (talk) 20:19, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
On most wikipedias, you can upload files locally, subject to local policies. --Didym (talk) 22:51, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
That's good to know. I just tried to fined the procedure to upload locally, but I've had no luck. Is there a link you can share that provides that info (as opposed to uploading to Commons)? Thanks! WarrenGOut (talk) 00:39, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
On which of the 314 wikipedias are you planning to upload? En? Then you can try the local upload wizard. --Didym (talk) 20:38, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Please delete

Hello, could you please delete File:Morgan McGarvey.png, File:Sen. Morgan McGarvey.png, File:Morgan's Family.jpg, File:Morgan McGarvey and Family.jpg, and File:Attica Scott.jpg? They have been tagged as "no permission" for longer than a week. BottleOfChocolateMilk (talk) 23:46, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

There is a huge backlog at the moment regarding no permission files, reaching back to November. I will try to reduce this backlog, but this might take some time. --Didym (talk) 20:40, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Content about personal picture Vicente Torregrosa

Hi, I don't understand why have you eliminate te Vicente Torregrosa picture, so it's a family original picture, so you (I don't know who you're, but I'm sure you haven't any wright, so I'm going to move it again, thanks to not to take it off. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jtorregr (talk • contribs) 13:16, 19 January 2022‎‎ (UTC)

Which file are you referring to? By the way: you can't just reupload files, use COM:UDR instead. --Didym (talk) 19:06, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Content about personal picture Melania Dalla Costa

Hi, I don't understand why you deleted Melania Dalla Costa's photo. I took that photo, it's not copyright violation. I talked to Melania Dalla Costa and she told me that I can use the photo! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vind Grizzly (talk • contribs) 17:06, 26 January 2022‎ (UTC)

Then please explain why the photo is also available here. --Didym (talk) 17:12, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
Because it is copyright free.
Stop removing the photo! Vind Grizzly (talk) 17:19, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
What makes you think this is a free image? Please read COM:L and COM:VRT before complaining. --Didym (talk) 17:25, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Question about an image deletion request

Hi @Didym: Just wondering, why was this image (File:Mike paul.jpg) nominated for deletion by you? The uploader and the author seem to be same person. Satdeep Gill (talk) 07:18, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

After having a closer look at File:Promo Mike Paul Catherine Deslauriers.jpg, I just tagged both uploads of this user, even if this could be own work. --Didym (talk) 20:04, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
@Didym. Thanks for the clarification. Satdeep Gill (talk) 06:19, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

WLM 2021 Slovenia deletions

Hi. Yesterday, you deleted about 50 contributions to the Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in Slovenia that I uploaded as donations from third parties, as "no permission". I wasn't aware of any problems with permissions having received no notification, could you please undelete a random one (say, commons:File:SG CERKEV sv.Elizabeta DJI 0917.jpg) temporarily for me to check the description page? — Yerpo Eh? 13:03, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

You have uploaded those files with OTRS pending, so there was no extra notification. I did check the VRTS, but was unable to find any permission. Do you still need one of the files temporarily undeleted? --Didym (talk) 17:03, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
I'll check my notes. — Yerpo Eh? 19:16, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi, you recently deleted File:Napoleon Star, 2021.jpg. It had been restored before based on ticket:2021092110007157 by King of Hearts. Did you have a new (and stronger) reason to delete it? In any case, a regular deletion request might be a better course of action than speedy deletion given the file's history. whym (talk) 12:36, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

King of Hearts did tag this image with Permission received (not PermissionTicket), but the ticket never contained a valid permission, which means the file was eligible for speedy deletion after 30 days. I actually do not see any reason for a standard deletion request instead of speedy deletion. --Didym (talk) 15:49, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
I think I mistook different ticket numbers while I was looking around related tickets involving the same person/the same group of people (in particular [1], if you are interested), sorry. Please forget what I said. whym (talk) 03:34, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Earth 2022 - Deutschland

Hallo Didym,

Using my photos on page without credit

Hi Didym, I noticed that almost all (6) of my photo contributions to the Commons were also being used by you. When I looked to see how they were being incorporated into your Commons page, I saw that they were being grouped into dated lists under the—insinuating—title of Mobile Upload, mixed in with your own work, uncredited... All my licenses require that the files be credited to me upon use. I'm asking you to please either credit me for these files or remove them. Here is a list of the pages that have my (uncredited) photos and said file URLs. Thank you.

Of course, unless there is a sanctioned purpose for these lists that isn't properly explained on the Commons? I tried to find out what this use could maybe legitimately be before posting to your Talk page, but couldn't find anything. Like, is this a way of bookmarking that I've not heard about? Thanks. ·• Comtesse d'Autodidactica (talk) 09:55, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

Those lists are created by bot to include all new files in Category:Mobile upload and subcategories. Starting in 2014, when the amount of copyright violations and spam was even higher than today, these were meant as a tool to help detecting images that need deletion (which does not mean that the files still on these page have any issues). Your files are attributed as on any page on any wikipedia, the image links to the file page with all information. --Didym (talk) 10:22, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

Restore deleted files

Is there any chance you can restore these files

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Frederic.wang

It would be highly important for an ongoing research project to find a way to access a copy of those files.--Physikerwelt (talk) 07:56, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

--Didym (talk) 12:54, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

Reason for deletion of File:Eli-Clare-publicity.jpg

Hello! I saw that you deleted File:Eli-Clare-publicity.jpg in October 2021. It's not clear to me why the file was deleted. Would you be able to explain why this image is not able to be used? Thank you!

LemonOrangeLime (talk) 03:14, 7 June 2022 (UTC)LemonOrangeLime

This file was uploaded as own work, but probably was taken from somewhere else. The uploader was told to provide evidence of permission to use the file, but failed to do so. --Didym (talk) 13:23, 7 June 2022 (UTC)

Hallo, kannst du bitte das doppelte "and" (and and volunteer response team members only), das der Bot da eingesetzt hat, aus dieser Vorlage und aus Template:Haifisch64 sowie Template:Lygia Simetzberger entfernen? Danke. --Magnus (talk) 06:17, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

Alle erledigt. --Didym (talk) 14:07, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Multimax (71) Packung

I ZR 104/17) liegt kein schützenswertes Kunstwerk vor.

Ich bitte dich, die No-permission-Bapperl zu entfernen. --Minderbinder (talk) 08:06, 7 August 2022 (UTC)

--Minderbinder (talk) 07:10, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
--Didym (talk) 16:29, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

TORPOR jpeg

Thank you for your feedback regarding the picture I uploaded of the band TORPOR. I wish to upload a picture of the band and have permission to do so however I am new to Wikipedia editing. Could you give me some advice on how to go about adding an image appropriately to the page I am creating?

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022

Hallo Didym,

Danke Mewa767 (talk) 13:37, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

--Didym (talk) 18:18, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Dann habe ich mich vertan. Ich weiß nicht, wie das möglich war. Jedenfalls vielen Dank für das Nachschlagen. --Mewa767 (talk) 21:31, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

User:Yadhu Krishna BP

Dear Administrators:Didym

I want to know from You that if an image uploaded by me is nominated for deletion by some other User, what should I do next in order to delete that upload. 2409:4050:2E4D:C046:0:0:289:EC06 05:02, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

As only administrators can delete files, there is nothing you can do. --Didym (talk) 17:24, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
File:Braschosser Straße 53.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

:-) Brackenheim (talk) 09:04, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
Habe inzwischen die offizielle Vorlage gefunden. Nur zur Info: User talk:Falk2#Antrag auf Entsperrung. Mal schauen, was draus wird.

Erika39 (talk) 13:18, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
--Didym (talk) 22:52, 24 November 2022 (UTC)

File:Москвич 3.jpg

Hello, you deleted file File:Москвич 3.jpg due reason "copyvio from https://www.mk.ru/economics/2022/11/23/nazvana-cena-novogo-gorodskogo-krossovera-moskvich3.html ". If you check that page, it says "источник: википедия". This means "source: Wikipedia". So, mk.ru has taken that picture from Wikipedia. Pls restore the file. --Mikko Paananen (talk) 03:21, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Even if that page has taken the image from here, there are other sources that predate the upload. --Didym (talk) 12:19, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Kho Guik Lan image

Hello, I'm the guy creating the page for my ex. highschool. I would like to know if all I need is an email from the source allowing free use or is there anything else I need?

~ItsHong 10:43am 21/12/2022 ItsHong (talk) 02:43, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

That should be sufficient. You can find further information on COM:VRT. --Didym (talk) 16:19, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi, This may be OK or not, but could you explain your deletion? The license is actually correct. Thanks, Yann (talk) 01:32, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

As the last comment states, we don't know the author, but that does not make this an anonymous work. The author may have died more than 70 years ago, but there is no proof of this. --Didym (talk) 01:36, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

Allison Silverman image

Hello, I'm the guy trying to update the page for Allison Silverman and thought that I sourced a photo from a source allowing free use. Is there something else I need to do? Falconsovereignstorm (talk) 18:59, 24 December 2022 (UTC)

What makes you think this is a free image? Also, you didn't specify a license, which is a reason for deletion itself. --Didym (talk) 01:02, 25 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi Didym. I'm new to wiki and am still learning. I thought because the photo was posted to the WGA fb page with a credit, and that since the creator is deceased that the photo was a free image. Any tips you can offer would be valued. Falconsovereignstorm (talk) 20:31, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Please read COM:L. In short: an image is usually free if the author releases it under a free license or if the author has been dead for a certain time, usually 70 years. --Didym (talk) 21:01, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for your assistance. This is a lot of new language for a layman like me. Falconsovereignstorm (talk) 19:36, 28 December 2022 (UTC)

File:Spurs.svg

The file wasn't transferred to wikipedia, can we still do that? Govvy (talk) 10:29, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

In theory we could do that, but I am not going to undelete the file to support that fair use nonsense. --Didym (talk) 20:36, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

Another user and I indicated that this file is in scope, especially since there are no other (obvious) examples of receipts from that country. Why did you delete it? Brianjd (talk) 02:53, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

A random receipt in pretty bad condition is certainly not within the project scope. --Didym (talk) 11:53, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
