Hello, Colosseum~commonswiki!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Re: Alaska class cruiser[edit]

Hi, you have already given permission in the form of GFDL: "Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation;" and CC-3.0: "you are free to share and make derivative works of the file under the conditions that you appropriately attribute it, and that you distribute it only under a license identical to this one". The propellors have been altered to be more realistic side view, and the directors are altered to look more like the curved plates mounted on beams shown in photos. Is there something wrong with them? Jappalang (talk) 23:44, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I know what I'm doing here, I don't need help from anyone modifying the drawing to look like whatever picture you saw... I did extensive (6 months' worth) research to complete this drawing and I don't appreciate having someone change it who hasn't done that same research.

I suppose you're right about the propellors, but that was something I had relatively little research to support so I used our premade set of screws. Nothing to worry about there.

Why it was necessary to edit it in the first place is beyond me.

I took on the conversion because in its original GIF format, the image would be an ugly mess when rescaled (a small sized jagged picture with missing lines) as evident here. Converting it to PNG alleviates some of the issues but the large scale image exhibited blockiness (due to the GIF's format of 256 colours and pixels without interpolation), so I took it upon my self to create a vector based image per w:Wikipedia:Image use policy ("GIF format for inline animations;" and "SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags"). I understand the pride you hold for your work, but do understand that by releasing your work under the the licenses mentioned above, you have given permission to anyone to do whatever they want from the image as long as proper attribution is given with compatible licenses. I have not changed your image, it is still available at File:CB-1 Alaska Outboard Profile 1.gif and its derivatives are correctly attributed to it. Jappalang (talk) 03:21, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Taking off the conversion is would be preferable, to be quite honest. The current image blurring is inappropriate. The SVG conversion incorrectly interprets many lines that should be hard-edged, especially railings and such. An SVG conversion also requires color alteration, as a colored one-pixel line acceptable in raster form appears much lighter when you fade the edges. This makes the railings significantly harder to see. If an SVG is what you wish, it would be much better to create one from scratch. This could avoid the atrocious mangling of the upper works evident here http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/CB-1_Alaska_Outboard_Profile.png turning what should be a rather clean grid into a smear. Regardless of the license it is released under, it has to look acceptable at full zoom. (As a side note, you have quite drastically changed the appearance of the image, as well as altering the propeller (I suggest more research on this, neither version looks correct) and altered the fire directors.)65.188.174.241 04:17, 3 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I know this discussion is pretty old, but I would like to mention that vector based renderings are always better than raster for images like this. If there is an issue with the vector rendering itself it is due to your viewer settings, or the conversion. CombatWombat42 (talk) 16:18, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This drawing was created as a raster image. It was never designed to be turned into a vector drawing - I understand that SVGs are superior, but at the time I did not have the ability to make vector graphics. I have requested several times that all my Alaska class cruiser drawings be REMOVED from Wikipedia to no avail - they are inaccurate, and I am uncomfortable with the licensing available here. Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
