Hello, Christopher Forster!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

please use categorization hierarchy

[edit]

You have uploaded lots of images of Sami drums, and you have correctly categorized them in Category:Sami drums. However, you have also added lots of other, spurious categories. This sort of thing breaks the categorization system. You should not add Sami drums to Category:Sami people, as Sami drums are clearly not Sami people. Note how Category:Sami drums is in Category:Sami culture, which is itself in Category:Sami people.

Much less should you add images of Sami drums to completely unrelated categories such as Category:Runic writing. Thank you. --Dbachmann (talk) 09:34, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also, it turns out you have copied all these drawings of Sami drums from old.no. The fact that you made some trivial manipulations with gimp doesn't give you the copyright on them. These are drawings, and the copyright lies with whoever made these drawings. If the drawings were made before 1915 or so, they would be free of copyright. But as long as their date is not established, we must assume they are copyrighted.

At no point were you free to upload these images under Creative Commons. They are either in the public domain, or else you have been violating somebody else's copyright. In either case, you have made a false claim by claiming copyright on these images yourself. --Dbachmann (talk) 09:52, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Response to copyright:
Ethical permissions are approved
Publication sources: Ernst Manker "Die lappische Zaubertrommel : eine ethnologische Monographie, 1, Die Trommel als Denkmal materieller Kultur" (1938) and "Die lappische Zaubertrommel : eine ethnologische Monographie, 2, Die Trommel als Urkunde geistigen Lebens" (1950), both in the series "Acta Lapponica" published by Nordiska museet. If they requested for permission to reproduce the images from the Sámi people? The song Sámiid Ædnan is sung in the The Thing (2011 film). The people who wrote however claim copyright on the song. Since the images are illustrating Sámi culture objectivity and not with subjectivity such as riducule of the Sámi people, I guess ethically OK. Not OK e.g. Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy.
Author's Permission
"you may of course use my scans. No attribution beyond what they require would be necessary" ~Tor Gjerde
Creative Commons or public domain?
My editing was made on GNU/Linux. Editing manually in GIMP was most time consuming. I would favor the CC-BY-SA-3.0 license. You are still free too: to Share and to Remix. Under the following conditions: Attribution and Share Alike. Reference: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en
Attribution is not much to ask for e.g. on editing etc. It is also available for free. Assuming rather than asking is not that good, this is questionable content I agree, but prejudice attitude is not worth in my opinion. --Christopher Forster (talk) 16:05, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
look, this is wikimedia's website, and there are rules. If you decide to contribute, you agree to abide by them. This is not the place to complain how these images were "stolen" from the Sami, or how you had a hard time using GIMP.
You may not upload images under false claims of copyright. You may still ask people to kindly attribute you, but this is not a legal claim to copyright, it is just you asking for a favour.
As for your claim that you have the "author's" permission, the author of the copyrighted publication is Ernst Manker (1938). Either you get permission from whomever owns Manker's copyright today, or you should just stop uploading copyrighted material to wikimedia servers and then preach from some high moral horse when you are called out. Sure, upload these images to the internet. But don't contribute to this project if you are not willing to respect our rules, it is really as simple as that. Also, what the FLYING *** does the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy have to do with this? You violated a copyright, and then made a false claim of owning a copyright, that's all there is to it. Jyllands-Posten has literally nothing to do with it. --Dbachmann (talk) 09:24, 20 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Dbachmann,
The Upload Wizard should inform clearly and correctly even for beginners. Maybe these images are not eligible the CC-BY-SA-3.0 license. The guidelines of consent might apply and this content doesn't riducule the Sámi people.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Two Angelica Fádno Sámi instruments.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hello. Concerning your contributions to Category:Sami drums. I suppose that your contributions are based on images from Ernst Manker's Die lappische Zaubertrommel (1938). Would it be possible for you to give specific descriptions for each drum. Some of these drums are, as you might know, famous by a specific name, and it would be of great help to idetify them by name and/or place of origin. Bw --Morten Haugen (talk) 11:57, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Thank you very much for your interest in the Sámi drums! It would be nice to explain some of the drum symbols. --Christopher Forster (talk) 18:10, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, Christopher. As I've told you in private mail, this is not a question about explaining drum symbols. That is in itself very interesting, but more a matter for the encyclopedia than for this media archive.
I want you to work with identifying each drum, as were done in Ernst Manker's major work Die lappische Zaubertrommel (1938 and 1950), where these images are taken from. Every specific drum is unique, with it's own history and provenance. You are perhaps familiar with the description of Anders Poulsens drum, quoted here; then you will understand why it important to describe these drums better; not just as «some sami drum», but as an individual drum related to its history and owner and some times even a written description of its content.
I have added such provenance for a few of the drums i know: Bindalstrumman, Anders Paulsens drum (see here), one of the drums from the Åsele collecting, and Frøyningsfjelltrumman. Now i would like you to complete your work with this images by taking part in the identification.
And please also remove the notice «Warning regarding its contents and powerful symbols.» It is highly unencyclopedic. These drums are religious objects, and should as such be treated with the highest respect, but they are no more «powerful» than a picture of an altarpiece or a prayer wheel. Bw --Morten Haugen (talk) 14:00, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! I don't know where to obtain the information about the drums. Regards --Christopher Forster (talk) 22:23, 25 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
