Brynn, please

I know what happened sucked, in general, but please don't think that it's reflecting horribly on you. Yes, you (and everyone else) could have done things better, but overall you're a valued/valuable contributor. Take a break, enjoy yourself, but please don't go for good. —giggy 06:08, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Loads of thoughts with you. You are more than a good user here I assure you. By all means, time out, but then reflect & join a good group of people who are not always perfect :) --Herby talk thyme 07:00, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Good to have you back. I would like to use two of the pics on your page in an article in Wikipedia on sustainability - the Blue Tit and the White Water Lily - would this be OK, I am not sure of the procedure? Granitethighs (talk) 00:55, 10 July 2008 (UTC)\

First, thanks! :D As for the two photos (that I didn't take)on my user page that you want to use on wikipedia, just put [[Image:ParusCaeruleus.jpg|thumb|right|Your caption goes here]] on the wikipedia page you're editing. Then do the same for the other. That's it! Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 03:45, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

recently uploaded pic

im fairly new at this, i took that photo of Trapp...i may have put in the wrong info just because i didnt understand what was being asked...i did however update a couple times perhaps i fixed the problem...thanz for you help.

Okay, all done...i do plan on uploading photos that i did not photograph and dont want them to be deleted, is there any place where i can find the appropriate copyrights that isnt so complicated to understand?? Swindler305 (talk) 19:10, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Didn't really understand the question...

I found a copyvio uploading uploader and just tagged all of the obvious copyvio contributions with speedy. In those cases I don't bother notifying the uploader - I don't see the point. Some of them may have had copyvio tags on - I don't recall. I was working quickly so I may not have noticed the other tags. My primary concern is that the images are tagged for admin review, rather than seeping into the body of commons. I don't see any problem with your actions. Megapixie (talk) 07:38, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Ask

Any of this images on this site are free?

I ask before upload for avoid some problem. Georgeok (talk) 04:19, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, none of the images from that site are freely licensed. Any game made by Ensemble Studios (there is always some fine print at the bottom of the web page saying who made the game) is a subsidiary of Microsoft, and Microsoft never uses a free license.  :\ Sucks, I know. Brynn (talk!) 04:32, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
And from here, is Flickr? some picture of the game, I need it for the es:Age of Empires II article. I can't understand perfectly the rights and the English, thank you. Georgeok (talk) 04:35, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
Hereis an example of a flickr photo that can be uploaded to Commons. Notice on the bottom right of that page under the Additional Information heading there is a circle with the word 'by' inside of it? That means it is a creative commons attribution license, which is okay for commons. Here is another example of a license that is okay. Notice that it also has the circle with the word 'by' in it and that it also has a circle with a backwards 'C' in it. The circle with the backwards C means that this license also has a share-alike limitation and that is okay for Commons also. If a flickr photo has anything other than just the attribution and share-alike limitations, it's not okay for commons. Here is an example of a photo that we couldn't keep on Commons because it has a no-commercial-use limitation (that's the dollar sign with the line through it). Also, if you click on the 'some rights reserved' link on a flickr photo, it will tell you what the limitations are. Hope that helps! Just remember...share-alike and attribution are the only two limitations we allow. Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 04:53, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
One more thing...this photo would not be allowed on Commons, even if it did have a Commons compatible license on flickr, because it is a photo of an 'all rights reserved' image (what we would call a derivative). If this isn't making sense, or if you have other questions, do feel free to ask again.  :) Brynn (talk!) 05:19, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Argh.

You don't read things do you. I'm normally calm about this stuff, but it gets annoying after a while. It states on my talk page that I don't want any type of warnings. And, just for the record, the guy who uploaded it was the person who took the picture. If you have any doubts about that, ask the original author. Stop posting image deletion warnings on my page. Thanks. Undead warrior (talk) 03:23, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi there! Sorry, didn't mean to annoy you! But, just a little fyi...when a person uses the 'Nominate for deletion' button on the image page, it automatically creates a deletion subpage, adds the deletion request to the deletion log AND places a note on the uploader's talk page....all with that one little click. I'm the nicest person in the world...you could try to be a little nicer.  :\ Brynn (talk!) 03:28, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm nice on good days. Days when family members die of cancer and computers get viruses are not my good days. This day is both. Undead warrior (talk) 03:45, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Gosh...this really is a bad day for you.  :\ Feel free to be mean for a few days at least. Hope tomorrow is better for you. :) Brynn (talk!) 03:49, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

2 Things

1. I don't know how to delete the images from wikimedia commons, as i need to delete them and reupload them on the english wikipedia under fair usage. 2. How do i change my name?

Click on the "Nominate for deletion" button that is on every image page that you want deleted...a little box will pop-up in which you put your reason for requesting deletion (just put something like 'copyvio. I didn't know we couldn't use fair-use on Commons'). That way everyone will know you now recognise the mistake and won't hold it against you. Easy mistake to make. As for the name change, I'm not sure how to do that. I'll find out for you and leave a note on your talkpage. Also, don't forget to sign your messages with ~~~~ :) Brynn (talk!) 05:45, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Specifically could you {{subst:Geocoding}} . I'm joining Para in the mighty push to get more people geocoding their images. Thanks! --ShakataGaNai ^_^ 00:39, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Are there any other big photo-sharing sites that I can take free photos from like Flickr? Goodvac (talk) 17:49, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi there! Sorry it took me so long to respond. I know openphoto.net has some photos that are licensed in a way that is compatible with Commons. Other than that, US government websites are usually a pretty safe bet (just be sure the photo is taken by a US government employee, not a contractor). If you can't find photos to upload, there are a ton of other things to do on Commons. Patrolling latest files for obvious copyvios is always fun, and you get to see all of the new photos! If you like organizing, you could place uncategorised images into appropriate categories. If you have more questions, feel free to ask! Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 17:18, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your apology. But I still do not understand the point of your comment—your meaning seems lost in your attempt at humor. Perhaps you were saying that I should not have uploaded the low-res version, or perhaps that I should not have advocated keeping one and deleting the other. If the former, how does that differ from Timeshift9’s changing the license tag from PD to CC? Or perhaps you disapprove of that fix too? If I had deleted a version rather than advocating deletion, I would agree with your criticism; obviously an admin will decide which (if any) version is kept.

Can you explain the non-sarcastic meaning of “I'm not sure how things are done where you are from, but we have these things called discussions”? That is what I took to be sarcastic.

BTW I am truly sad that you withdrew your admin candidacy despite overwhelming support. —teb728 t c 08:40, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Withdrawal doesn't have to be forever. But one point to make - Admins aren't special in the sense that they have more right to make decisions or take actions that aren't open to other users. Admins just have more buttons. Where the right thing is obvious and doesn't require admin buttons, or even if something might be the right thing to do, there is nothing wrong with anyone doing it. Be BOLD. So long as no-one takes exception, nothing that happens here can't be undone. Regards, Ben Aveling 10:58, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

After some thought

Hi Brynn (& with a little more thought than my first "comment"!). I can see that your reacted to a single posting on your RfA and maybe understandably so. However could I ask you to take a look at the wider perspective here. The support for you otherwise has been of a very high order which says a lot about your work & interactions here on Commons. Sure - admin brings some less pleasant interactions. However it also allows you to help people to a greater degree too.

There will be no one here on Commons who would mind if you decide to re-open the RfA after a little thought (I'd be pleased to do so). You are a quality contributor & Commons can always accommodate such relatively rare beasts. Equally if you feel that your reaction was correct we will all hope you will continue to work with us and continue to bring your talent to Commons for a long time to come.

Take care --Herby talk thyme 10:46, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

DVD Monthly Cover

Hi, you removed the DVD Monthly cover I uploaded onto Wikimedia. However I am the editor of the magazine and put the image up for use on the DVD Monthly Wikipedia page (it's already online on the DVD Monthly website). Do I need to flag it as something else when I upload it to stop it being deleted again?

Hi ShadowJester07! If your friend has said he will release the photo into the public domain, he can do one of two things: 1)He can change the license on flickr to one that is compatible with Commons' requirements, or 2)He can send an email (have him use the verbiage found in the email template that is linked to from the OTRS page) to OTRS. Also, the link you posted here only says 'go ahead', so isn't helpful as far as a release goes. Sorry. If there were an easier way to do it, I'd tell you about it. Non Commercial flickr images

Dear Admin Brynn, Can you confirm that "Non Commercial" flickr images cannot be placed on Commons. This new user uploaded this particular image by M. Harrsch here: [2] on Commons and I was trying to tell him/her on the talkpage that it cannot be placed on Commons.

  • But the only notice on his talkpage was your warning that 'all rights reserved' images are prohibited on Commons. So....I was just wondering if this is still true. Thank You from Canada --Leoboudv (talk) 23:07, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Leoboudv, you are right. Images that have a copyright license that restricts commercial use and/or creation of derivatives are not permitted on Commons. After reviewing a couple hundred flickr images over the last couple of days I'd grown weary of giving to each flickrvio uploader the whole speil about Commons licensing requirements, and had in this instance given only the rationale for that particular image. Apologies if that undermined your attempt to be more thorough in explaining licensing. I just checked that users talk page and it appears that dave pape has supported you in educating the new user. Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 02:27, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Dear Admin Brynn, Thank you for clarifying the situation. I know I am not supposed to bite new users (at least on Wikipedia) but this user should have known the rules on uploading flickr pictures. Mrs Harrsch has given permission for a few of her flickr images to be used on Commons with the 'cc by sa 2.0' license so I didn't understand why this new user couldn't contact her...to get the license changed. As an aside, thanks for kindly marking my images on Byzantine art/jewelry. I do my best to place quality historical images on Commons...but I always check to make sure they were taken by the flickr owner first. Here is a brief list of images I placed here (after the flickr owners agreed to license them freely):

I think the images are historically timeless. On a more personal note, I apologise for bothering you with my question. I was just confused here, nothing more. As for me, I always follow the rules and respect other people's copyright. With kind regards from Metro Vancouver, Canada --Leoboudv (talk) 05:02, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Aahhh...so that was you uploading the byzantine jewelry photos. I did notice them as I was doing flickr review. Very nice and valuable additions to our collection. And, Vancouver!! I, too, am from BC. The Okanagan to be exact, although for the last several years I've lived in the coldest state in the lower 48 - Minnesota.  :\ Brynn (talk!) 13:30, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

I photoshopped this image, and it has been tagged for deletion. The person who tagged it hasn't replied at all. I guess he/she is busy. Can you please check the sources I have given and find out whether there is any image with copyright problems? And if so then please do explain me. It was one of my first few images and I didn't know much about copyrights back then. Thanks in advance. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 14:58, 18 November 2008 (UTC) P.S: Sorry for that sir mam mix up. Sounded like Bryan to me. I just saw its Brynn. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 14:58, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Marsa! I just checked the sources you provided. Unfortunately, this image collage will have to be deleted as it includes images that are likely all rights reserved (there is nothing at the source to indicate the bloggers own copyright or that the image is freely licensed). When choosing images you find on the internet, presume the image is published under an all rights reserved copyright license unless there is explicit language stating otherwise at the source of the original image. Even if an image appears in an individual's blog, that individual is often not the copyright owner, so critically assess that factor also. Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 15:08, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Image:Pharrell performing September 2008.jpg

Hey there Brynn, an image I uploaded not too long ago was deleted because it had an all rights reserved copyright license, but I asked the person who uploaded the picture for permission to use it, and they allowed it. I then emailed OTRS the copy of the approval that same day, but ended up getting deleted anyways. Did I do something wrong? Thanks. DiverseMentality (talk) 18:27, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Could you ask the author to explicitly specify under which licence they wish to publish their photograph under? --Kanonkas(talk) 18:45, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Hey DiverseMentality. No, you didn't do anything wrong. When I see all rights reserved on a flickr photo I speedy-delete. Restoring it will be easy enough, which I will do, and I'll also place an npd template on it which will set it up for auto-deletion in a week or so if permission isn't received and verified by OTRS by then. Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 18:51, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
No please don't do that. OTRS got the permission, but it wasn't valid. As I explained above, that will sort out the issue. --Kanonkas(talk) 19:18, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
@ Kanonkas - hahahhaha...I think this is what is meant by the saying "too many cooks spoil the soup". ;) I thought your request to make sure a specific license was noted in the email was just a general request and being helpful. I already did restore it before I got your note here. As I am not an OTRS person, I'll leave this one entirely up to you, Kanonkas, as you seem to have an inside track. *moves fingers awayyyy from the buttons* :D Brynn (talk!) 19:29, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Oh, I see. I'll email the author and ask for an explicit license. Would I have to email the original email again along with the license afterwords? DiverseMentality (talk) 23:06, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Brynn - could you add a location for where this was taken, please? It'll help getting the trees identified - MPF (talk) 22:37, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Brynn. Thanks for your message. Regarding the image of the Aurelian Walls, I'd merely transfered it from Wiki-en (and I made sure I mentioned it in the img description), I thought that it had been uploaded to Flickr by the Wikipedist himself who uploaded the image originally and that therefore it would be ok for me to do so. Pourquoi

Thanks for bringing that photo to my attention! I've deleted it as well because it, too, was an obvious copyvio. Please don't take personally the deletion of images that you've uploaded. Our goal here at Commons is to maintain an archive of freely licensed images. Anything that isn't truly freely licensed really does have to be deleted. I know having photos deleted that you've taken the time to upload can be frustrating. Please do use a critical eye when checking out Flickr images. A good percentage of Flickr users aren't familiar with copyright law at all, so they think if something is found on the internet, it must be freely licensed. Do compare the photo you might be interested in uploading to Commons with the other photos in the person's photostream. If it doesn't seem reasonable that the person actually took the photo, they probably didn't. Compare photographic styles, camera's used, quality of the photos, and even subjects and of course be sure it has a free license as well. As I explained, if there isn't some consistency in the photostream, if is often because a person is simply gathering photos from various places on the web and uploading them to flickr for their personal enjoyment...might be fine for flickr, but it's not what we're doing here on Commons. If you have more questions, (or come across more copyvios! :D ) please feel free to leave a note again. Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 17:35, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

accusations and trust problems

Your name was mentioned on my talk page. I have no idea of the integrity of the information I have been given about many many many many things, the subject matter where your name appears being one of the many.

I am however certain about the ability to offer to the accused a chance to explain themselves and also clear up untruths and the importance that opportunity be given.

Hi Carol! It's not me they are referring to! :D I think they are referring to Brya. Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 18:32, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
An example of the reason to ask the accused user/person/administrator. It smells like a lame hackers game -- rank. Sorry to bother you. -- carol (talk) 18:45, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Flickr

Will do. I usually try and do that, but my connection has been so slow that I was having trouble uploading the original size version. Thanks, Steven Walling (talk) 01:05, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you

Thanks for uploading higher-res versions of those images. :) Cirt (talk) 17:26, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

No problem! :) I knew you must have just missed it this once. :) Brynn (talk!) 17:28, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank You

  • Thank You for kindly inspecting the three images of Sassanid & Parthian artwork which I upload with Mr. Khoey's permission to Commons. I'm sorry I failed to upload the highest resolution image of this important image: File:Sassanid silver plate by Nickmard Khoey.jpg It was 3 AM PST time in Canada when I uploaded them and I was mentally drained. I will be slowing down a lot in 2009 due to ill health. So, I will be uploading very few images of ancient art sadly to Commons this year. But...may I wish you a belated Happy 2009!

If this will cheer you up, here are some pictures I placed on Commons. Priceless I should think:

Thank You, User Brynn. Most of my images are Egyptian oriented but I love all great ancient art....because they don't make them today. Regards from Metro Vancouver, Canada --Leoboudv (talk) 02:12, 3 January 2009 (UTC) Cheers, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:12, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

You are very welcome. :) They are, indeed, beautiful images and important additions to our collection, so thank you for uploading them. Cheers! Brynn (talk!) 05:01, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Avedon and Newton pict from flickr

Hallo, thank you for all your messages!

... the photographing of another's photos does not create a new, valid copyright... This not a hardcopy of master´s photo, but this is the photo from the photo-exhibition!!! This is not copy of the photo, this is just document from the exhibition.

What is the different between pictures File:Avedon in Berlin 3056857210 194af1fb48 b.jpg and File:Avedon in Berlin.jpg ([3])? On the picture File:Newton's bar.jpg are the Newton´s photos visible, and is correctly in commons. What is differential??? I don´t understand this.

  1. Can I send to commons photos of books (booklet)?

Thank you, --Svajcr (talk) 09:24, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

OMG, I just now saw your message here! When I logged on yesterday, I saw only the most recent message (the one beneath yours) and didn't even think there would be more than one new message. So sorry, I wasn't ignoring you!
I did see the deletion request for one of the Richard Avedon photos, and it seems everyone there handled your questions. Also, keep in mind, when it comes to things like freedom of panorama (FOP) and incidental inclusion, these things are all very subjective. There just isn't a hard and fast line to decide when a coyrighted image is included simply because it was there, or if it is included intentionally and adds value to the photograph. I, personally, wouldn't have thought the Richard Avedon photo hanging on the building was big enough or was the central focus or added value to the photo uploaded here, but some things just aren't worth worrying about. The person who deleted the photo has an opinion, a different opinion, that is just as valid as mine. The photos that you uploaded that I deleted were very clear cut, as the original artists' work was definitely and intentionally the focus of the photo deleted. As you can imagine, if you were a painter and painted beautiful pictures, then someone took photos of those paintings and sold the photos, you would think your copyright of your painting had been infringed on...and it certainly would have been. The same is true of other photographers' photos. Hope that helps. Cheers!! Brynn (talk!) 20:21, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

For being such a good friend

Hi Brynn, I would like to express my gratitude for your participation at my recent RfA, which succeeded with an overwhelming final count of 100 % support. I'm happy that so many people have put faith in my abilities as an admin and I promise to use the tools wisely and do my best not to let you down. Please do feel free to get in touch if you feel you can improve me in any way; I will be glad to listen to all comments.

But that is not all. I want to thank you for your mental support and being such a good friend off-wiki. There I give you this flower :) Again, thanks,

Ron, thanks for pointing out the copyvio. I've deleted it. When you come across images that you believe are copyright violations edit the image page to place {{copyvio|type the reason you believe it is a copyright violation here}} on it. That way, any admin that is working on copyright violation deletions can get to it, likely much quicker than I will. Also, when you nominate an image for deletion by using that copyvio template, please advise the person who uploaded the photo, otherwise they will be wondering what is going on when they realise the photo is gone. You can advise the uploader by copying the the part on the copyvio template that says something like 'copy this to advise uploader' (after you've placed it on the image page you are nominating for deletion). Go to the uploaders talk page and paste that bit you copied from the template. That way everyone is happy and knows what is going on. One more small thing - talk pages, especially for admins, form part of a record of activity - it helps keep track of what has been said, to whom, and when it was said, so please don't ever remove something from another persons' talk page. By you asking me to delete things for you, then removing your request and my response, it could appear that I am not using the admin tools correctly. Cheers!
