License error on Flickr upload

Hi there. I'm getting "Error The Flickr image has a license which is incompatible with Wikimedia Commons." when trying to upload a Flickr image that is CC-BY. My CC-BY images used to upload fine... has there been a policy change? The image is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joi/2171092420/ Thanks as always for your help! -- Joi 05:44, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Also, the image is returned when searching for free images with your interface on the phrase "satoimo". Here is the URL of the error too: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~bryan/flickr/upload?token=4902&image=SatoimoJI1.jpg&action=upload

I've been getting the same error when attempting to upload Image:Moses Cleaveland.jpg, which was also published under an attribution license. - EurekaLott 06:24, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

"move back bot"

Could still use bot help to move all the images mentioned at Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Jorunn (uploaders request) to en-WP. Tagging at en-WP should be {{PD-Art}}{{Do not move to Commons}}. It'd be really great if you (or your bot :-) could help there. It's just too many files to move by hand. Lupo 09:59, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Hm. Would it help if I ran your bot under my admin account at en-WP? It should be possible to upload locally then, shouldn't it? In that way, we could upload at en first and then I could easily delete all those files (just one click per file as listed at the deletion request, using MediaWiki:DelReqHandler.js :-) Lupo 22:29, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

DRBot archival

I'm not convinced that monthly archives are well constructed in their present form. For example, Commons:Deletion requests/Archive/2007/09 is 48K long before you even consider the transclusions. (I'm not sure how to calculate the true length of that page). Two alternatives spring to mind: either go back to the daily logs or stop transcluding discussions.

Instead of having Commons:Deletion Requests/Image:Some awful image.jpg, perhaps "Image:Some awful image.jpg: Deleted Admin's rationale" would be more sensible. This would carry over the important info, without actually resulting in a hundreds of KB long page.--Nilfanion 10:29, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Redirect volgen

Multichill 12:07, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

re: Moving Jorunn's images to en-WP

Thank you for your help. I greatly appreciate it. But it seems we really really should have a dedicated "MoveBackBot", as there appear to be more cases like this. Just see Commons:Deletion requests/Files by Arthur Rackham... ugh! If we can't automate this from A to Z, I fear we'll have to settle for "delete here, and that's it". Missing vote checkboxes for PotY

Hi Bryan. I am voting for photos in Commons' PotY, and I noticed a problem with the voting page. For images with long names or many licenses, such as Image:Mont Blanc depuis la gare des glaciers.jpg in the Nature Views category, the vote checkbox can be hidden. The checkbox is pushed down below the bottom border of the containing box. If you don't observe this problem with your browser, increase your font size. This problem can be resolved by reducing the text size in one's browser, but I would guess that many people would get confused or frustrated because they wouldn't be able to figure that out. I hope you'll be able to sort out a solution. Thanks. ~MDD4696 16:06, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

New Flickr copyright tag

Hello. Thought you might like to know that Flickr recently launched a new service called The Commons. (I know I've heard that name somewhere before, but I can't quite put my finger on it. :) All of the images there are currently from the Library of Congress and are published under a new "no known copyright restrictions" license. There's more discussion at the Village pump. Do you think you can make your upload bot compatible with the new tag? - EurekaLott 04:46, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Hoi Bryan,

POTY Final

Hoi/Hello Bryan, I just voted in the POTY-final. After voting I returned automatically to the page with the "overview" of the categories, and it states for which image I have voted. However, it (still) asks me to vote in the other categories as well. The only existing category of course is "Final". So it still says that I will have to vote in the Final, although I just did that... I assume that my vote has been registered correctly, but the message is still very confusing. If you have the time, maybe you could amend this, so other users won't be as confused as I was? Thank you! Fruggo 12:05, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Woman fedayeen

Hi there. I'll have to doublecheck the source for that picture. As far as I understood from the person who sent them to me, these were from his private collection of pictures which he is willing to disseminate in the public domain. However, if this particular image is indeed a newspaper photo, you are correct about the licensing. Please give me a couple of day to check and get back to you. Thanks. Tiamat 15:04, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Bryan. It turns out that of the three photos I uploaded, this particular one wasn't taken by the person who forwarded them to me, but another photographer. So even though it's not a newspaper scan, the author of the photo was not the one to grant the permission for its use. Consequently, it should be deleted.
Thanks so much for prompting me to look into the subject further. And you can go ahead and delete it. Tiamat 16:12, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Duplicate {{Kept}} tags

Hi Bryan. I've notices that DRBot is sometimes adding a {{Kept}} tag where one already exists. See http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Image_talk%3AGrande_Arche_de_La_D%C3%A9fense_et_fontaine.jpg&diff=9636723&oldid=9612881. --MichaelMaggs 07:53, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Hmm. I'm not sure how to solve this. I could check for the existence of {{Kept}}, but in case the image is requested for deletion and kept for a second time, it would not insert the template. The other way is to check whether there are backlinks to the deletion request (like Whatlinkshere). This would fail in case there has been a previous discussion on the image talk page that is pointing to the deletion request. The real solution is of course to parse the wikitext, but that is also really hard, and prone to errors. What is your opinion? -- Bryan (talk to me) 15:38, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure either. Maybe there's something that you and Lupo could work out between you - the images that this happens on are those where I have closed a Del Request using his code. Maybe both sets of code shouldn't be trying to add the same template? Perhaps Lupo's code could not add the template at all, leaving your to do it overnight?--MichaelMaggs 19:26, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, disabling this feature in DelReqHandler and leaving it all to DRBot is one solution. Or DelReqHandler could wrap the {{Kept}} tag it adds in a <div class="fromDelReqHandler" id="fromDelReqHandler_2008_01_10">, and DRBot could check for the presence of divs of that class and then extract the date from the ID. But first, I think this is a wider problem that calls for a general solution. What if someone closes a DR and adds {{Kept}} manually? Therefore, I'd suggest making the template wrap itself by such a div. It should be possible that the template creates an ID like "kept_2008_01_20" with the date the template was added. If DRBot finds that this date matches the date the deletion request was closed, it need not add itself another {{Kept}}. That should be good enough, provided DRBot runs regularly. Lupo 19:52, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Matching on dates is very hard. Today is 24 January, January 24, 24-1, 24-01, 1-24? Automatically adding the date without DelReqHandler will only work when substing the template... something that does not happen. I think the way to go is the Whatlinkshere solution; I'll think about it, maybe I get some good idea. -- Bryan (talk to me) 20:01, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Re substing: {{User:Lupo/test2}} gives

User:Lupo/test2

Seems to work without subst... Lupo 20:34, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Tomorrow, /test2 will show tomorrow's date. Hmmm. Will /test3, too? {{User:Lupo/test3}} gives

User:Lupo/test2

Hmmm.... probably you're right. I should better go get some sleep! Lupo 20:38, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok, the above was clearly not what we needed. But one can subst {{CURRENTTIME}} and so on, too. See User:Lupo/test4.

test3:

User:Lupo/test2

test2:

User:Lupo/test2

With that, it does seem possible to have that template create a static timestamp. (Note that in these testfiles, I've only substed CURRENTTIME, not yet the date. So the date should always be the current date, but the time should remain fixed at the time the template call was added to the page! (Note that it is now already several minutes past 07:33 (UTC), yet the templates above still show the time the calls to /test3 and /test2 were added to /test4. For a real implementation in {{Kept}}, we'd of course need to subst CURRENTYEAR/MONTH/DAY instead. See en:Help:Substitution#Predefined templates. Lupo 07:42, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
That looks good! Let me know when you get it working in {{Kept}} and I can implement it in DRBot next week or something. Would it be possible to use the CURRENTDATE to add a link to a fake page, for example [[Template:Kept/Dates/{{CURRENTDATE}}]]? This way it would be easier for me to implement :) Regards, -- Bryan (talk to me) 18:43, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

POTY on the frontpage

I like putting the POTY on the frontpage. I don't think it was done last year? However, formatting it the same as the featured picture makes the one side of the page kind of long. What do you think of something along the lines of the finalists template, along the top of the page?

The finalists have been selected! Vote in the 2007 Commons Picture of the Year competition.
The final voting round to select the 2007 Picture of the Year is open from from 20 until 24 January.
العربية · Deutsch · English · Esperanto · español · فارسی · suomi · français · italiano · 日本語 · Nederlands · norsk · polski · português · русский · српски / srpski · svenska · 中文(简体) · 中文(繁體) · +/−

Of course it would be reworded and include a picture, but it would make things a bit more balanced as well. --Tom (talk - email) 21:43, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Error on Picture of the Year page?

Hi, Bryan. It seems that you were involved in the creation of the Picture of the Year/2007 page. So perhaps you can fix what looks like an error there: the image captioned "#4 – 62 votes; The Taj Mahal in Agra, India" is actually a photo named "Terrace field yunnan china denoised.jpg". It would appear that either the caption or the image is wrong. Thanks for featuring these great photos.--Blanchette 20:37, 26 January 2008 (UTC) Looking again it now is captioned properly.
