Request for special permission[edit]

I'm writing to you because Polish Wikibooks is planning to use your photo Old book bindings.jpg in promotional poster.

It's a bit inconvenient to include full copyright notice. Would you agree that we omit information about you and license of your photo - only on this poster? --Derbeth talk 16:52, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! Brighterorange 14:39, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's correct for you to assume the image is ineligible for copyright. There is indeed original authorship because an original colour scheme and style is being used (esp. in the original PNG).

Regardless, consider en:Template talk:PD-ineligible and en:Wikipedia:Public_domain for further information.

It would be wise to also consult the original author before stripping copyright as well. Dysprosia 12:59, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I agree, but a BSD license is fine, too. Brighterorange 14:46, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Beerbohm_Theft_and_Restitution.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

Oops, I wrote PD in the permission but didn't add a tag. Fixed. Brighterorange 15:49, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brightorange, Could you please tell who owns the copyright of this photo (I mean: who is the author?) Thanks!

It's me, "Tom Murphy VII." Brighterorange (talk) 13:49, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Brighterorange!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Permission to reproduce the photo in textbooks for Hong Kong preschool pupils[edit]

On behalf of Educational Publishing House Limited, I am writing to ask for permission to use the Boxelder bug pittsburgh photo (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Boxelder_bug_pittsburgh.jpg) in our English textbook and relating supplementary resources, including (but not limited to) electronic books, picture cards for Hong Kong preschool pupils. If we are permitted to use the photo, an acknowledgment will be printed in our book. I look forward to receiving your reply and I'd be very grateful to receive your permission. Please kindly take a look at the following statement as the acknowlegment:

Acknowledgments For permission to reproduce photographs in this book, we would like to thank the following: Tom Murphy VII / Wikimedia Commons Every effort has been made to contact the copyright holders, but in the event of any accidental infringement, we would be more than pleased to come to a suitable arrangement with the rightful owner.

That image is licensed under CC-BY, which means you can use it in any way as long as you credit him. InverseHypercube 20:58, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

SEEKING PERMISSION TO USE ONE OF YOUR IMAGES[edit]

Dear Brighterorange,

We are visual artists and academics who are currently working on a chapter in a book entitled ‘The Photograph and the Album’ (published by MuseumsEtc http://museumsetc.com/blogs/news/7422776-forthcoming-the-photograph-and-the-album). We are also contributing to the editorship of this volume. Our chapter is examining the role that the internet plays in acting as a 'giant photograph album'. We have taken this principle and have begun to look for images, searching – as many of us do – under our own names, curious to find out what images appear.

The following image came up in relation to one of our surnames:

Southside Slopes neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from East Carson Street. Taken in 2007. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Southside_Slopes_from_Carson.jpg

We are interested in using the image in our chapter and want to confirm that you agree that we can do this in line with the statement that appears in Wikimedia Commons which is as follows:

“This work has been released into the public domain by its author, I, Brighterorange. This applies worldwide. In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so: I, Brighterorange grants anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.”

To be clear about our use of the image, it will appear as part of a sequence of images for which we will provide full captions and acknowledgement (in reference to the information which appears on the webpage provided above).

We hope you are willing to give permission and would appreciate if you would confirm this via this email – j.carson@salford.ac.uk. We would also be very grateful if you could inform us of any other parties from whom we should seek permission in reference to this image, if you are aware of any such parties.

We would appreciate it if you could respond by Friday April 19th 2013.

Thank you for your consideration & please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Very best regards, Rosie Miller & Jonathan Carson

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open![edit]

Dear Brighterorange,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.

Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:04, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
