First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

I Ching Images[edit]

Hi Ben,

We

who

would like to use several of your images on Wikimedia in a book we are

publishing. We have to confirm that the copyright information is correct before we do.

Can you please confirm this is correct:

The copyright holder of this file, Ben Finney, allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that the copyright holder is properly attributed. Redistribution, derivative work, commercial use, and all other use is permitted.

Thank you.

Ben Finney response[edit]

Yes, all of the [Category:I_Ching_hexagrams] images in which I hold copyright are free for all recipients to redistribute under the terms of CC By 3.0.

Appropriate text would be:

The I Ching hexagram images are Copyright © 2007 Ben Finney. All recipients are permitted to modify and/or redistribute these images under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.

Good Day Mr. Finney,

I am a publishing agent looking to have a direct permission on file for a client to use your images in a book. Would you be able to contact me via email with direct permission? If so I will post my contact email then remove it once I receive the permission. Thank you for the consideration.

John

That request seems to be just a repeat of the existing one. Your client, like any recipient of these images, has permission explicitly granted as above; special grant to each party is not needed.

Thank you for the reply. My client is the one who asked the above question. However since this page is an open platform that anyone can edit I would just need an email sent directly to me stating the above. It would be greatly appreciated as this will accomplish the proper legal permission needed for the author to publish their book. If possible please just send the same permission to jsenac@services.lulu.com

Thank you,

John
