St. Paul.[edit]

Hi, I am the webmaster for a local Catholic Church. I plan the use the St. Paul image on http:///www.hoosiercatholic.org , check back for the new website within a few weeks. Thank you for this wonderful image.

thanks a lot for the info. Glad you like the photo --AngMoKio (talk) 19:52, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You voted to support this. I can only presume you haven't thouight this through:

Consider:

  • Those that nominate good FPs must wait 10 days to nominate again.
  • Those that noiminate bad FPCs need only wait 5 days (Rule of fifth day closure) or even just 1-2 days (FPX).

This means that the spammers will be able to put out more than the good contributors at a rate of as much as 10 to 1 in the worst cases.

Further, it's not unusual for potential FPCs to get finished in batches. A photographer comes back from vacation, or a restorationist finishes several projects in a burst of enthusiasm.

This proposal would force people to work on a timescale lengthy enough to kill all enthusiasm.

It gets worse:

This gives a strong disincentive against nominating work by anyone but yourself. People who go through and select high-quality works by others are usually to be praised, however, this proposal causes them to be punished.

I would ask that you reconsider your vote, and consider options 2 or 5, which are more restrictions than are currently in place, and which may always be built upon or increased later. Adam Cuerden (talk) 02:50, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for getting me to look at this again - I finally figured out why the sheep looked just a little odd when everything else looked good: One of the inks is shiny, and scans much brighter than it looks.

That said, I own the original, and was adjusting colour according to it. This is, of course, a good thing, but if scanners did colours accurately every time, you wouldn't really need me. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 01:56, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Adam, I uploaded a file which shows a bit what I mean. Here you can see that in some dark areas details get lost compared to the original scan. Btw I used the first time this upload tool for derivative work, it said that a link to my file will be added to your upload which doesn't really makes sense in this case. I checked so far this link didn't get added - we might have to remove it once it gets added. --AngMoKio (talk) 11:31, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've checked File:The Sunday at Home 1880 - Psalm 23 cropped.jpg against the original. The right image better reflects what is actually seen. The details which are more distinct in the original scan are not distinct in the original.
It's not particularly unusual to get some spurious detail (which isn't in the original) in the original scan, before colours are adjusted, though it usually manifests more in the lighter areas, as vastly increased amounts of paper grain. I'm honestly not sure what's producing the effect here, as the details you point out on the left have some parts that ought to be visible with the naked eye if they were really there, and aren't. At a guess, as the scan came out very light, we're seeing details of the paper grain under the ink, which is very subtle in the original.
Also, just to put this in perspective: the spurious details you're looking at - and I have literally compared this on the image - are about the width of a human hair. If you're going to ask about anything smaller than that, I'm going to need a better magnifying glass. Adam Cuerden (talk) 13:23, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AngMoKio!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Curious as to how you've handled commercial requests for your work[edit]

Hello,

I’m curious as to how you’ve dealt with commercial requests to use your work, as I am trying to get some ideas on how to handle these types of requests. I have received a few myself but have deferred to the licensing terms of the CC/GFDL and now realize that I have probably left some money on the table. For example, what has or hasn’t worked for you, what kind (s) of licensing do you use for, and what else you can think of that may be helpful. If you feel it’s more appropriate, we can continue this discussion via email. Thanks. BrokenSphere (Talk) 20:08, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there,
well I had really a lot of commercial requests so far and mostly just allowed them to use my photos. Mostly I requested a voucher copy, which I got in maybe 80% of the requests. I also often thought about getting money for commercial use of my pictures. But as I make photos as a hobby and don't want to earn money with it, I decided that people using my pictures for commercial purposes, should consider donating some money to a humanitarian organization and send me a voucher copy. It is really a nice thing to hold a book in your hand, in which your photos get used and you can additionally help other people in need. I see the whole wiki-thing as something charitable, so I thought this is the best way. --AngMoKio (座谈) 20:57, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your input. I saw the notice about considering making a charitable contribution in exchange for use on your userpage, it's a very commendable idea. I like the voucher copy idea, as I have had a few of these types of requests also. BrokenSphere (Talk) 21:03, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
