Expiry of GWToolset user group memberships[edit]

There is a proposal on the Bureaucrat's noticeboard to automatically expire GWT memberships after one year unless the user requests an extension. Please add your views and suggestions to the discussion. The reasonably informal process for getting access to GWT access will remain as is.

Thanks for uploading File:Akvarell av E - Nordiska museet - NMA.0052802 (1).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

/Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 15:31, 23 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Upload with OpenRefine 💎[edit]

Hello @Ambrosiani! I was just editing the info page about OpenRefine on Wikimedia Commons, I saw the number of uploads going up, and noticed your current upload of images from ArkDes! Amazing!

Your data modeling looks flawless. I did notice that you use a minimal {{Information}} template (which I really like), but the source of the file does not seem to display well, although your structured data is well-formed and it would be expected that the template does take the source from there. This looks like a bug to me, and perhaps it is something that @Jarekt would be willing to take a look at? Here's one sample file.

I notice that if I change the template to {{Information}} (i.e. discarding the description and author), then the source does display correctly.

In any case, thank you so much for trying and using OpenRefine. It is a wonderful surprise. Let me know if you have any comments about the process, and feel free to submit bugs and feature requests on GitHub if you encounter any. SFauconnier (talk) 18:53, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Sandra, I heard that 3.7 was available to try and went for it! Should be 1812 uploaded files once the batch is done.
Yeah, the http://kulturarvsdata.se urls are "hard-redirected" to the digitaltmuseum.se urls and it seems OpenRefine follows the links to their end destination somehow. This shouldn't be a problem since I think the digitaltmuseum.se urls are decently persistent.
I had to restart OpenRefine once because the Commons property & item search stopped working, might have been a memory issue of some kind. Except for that everything seems to go swimmingly. I'll let you know on GitHub if something else breaks along the way :)
More uploads coming – this was a fairly structured image set fitting for a first batch upload from ArkDes.
Ambrosiani (talk) 18:58, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
oops, the kulturarvsdata issue is probably not what you were thinking about. For me the source field looks the same with/without the detailed template though. Ambrosiani (talk) Ambrosiani (talk) 19:07, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, the issue that I mentioned seems to have gone away by itself. In the Wikitext tab, the infobox template said 'This file is lacking source information' and the files were categorized under Files with no machine-readable source. It may be a temporary thing with the template? SFauconnier (talk) 06:53, 7 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sandra I just found this post as I was away from civilization for few days. Your sample file seem fine, and there were no changes to the code for a while. Sometimes I see odd cashing issues with files in Category:Pages_with_script_errors where All kinds of odd issues go away after a nul edit to a file (like adding an empty line to a file). Maybe this was a similar issue. --Jarekt (talk) 01:38, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yeah, I'm guessing the automatic category "stayed on" for a bit longer than expected. Since I didn't add source information in the wikitext, each file has a brief moment between the first OpenRefine edit (uploading the file) and the second OpenRefine edit (adding structured data including a source). Ambrosiani (talk) 08:02, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds like such an issue indeed: right after upload, the template still refuses to display information from SDC and appears in several maintenance categories. After purging the page, and/or waiting a bit, the issue seems to go away by itself. I'll keep an eye on this with future uploads and will let you know if there's anything that I think we need to be concerned about. SFauconnier (talk) 12:27, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in Round 1 of the 2022 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.

Round 2 will end at UTC.

Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys[edit]

Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.

To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform). Both will run until approximately end October 2023.

  1. A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
  2. A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!

Many thanks! With kind regards, SFauconnier (talk) 11:04, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
