Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

När det gäller både kategorier och titlar så brukar jag först tänka Vad? eller Vem?, sedan Var? och ibland även När? Ett bra filnamn kan bestå av Egennamn + Plats + År eller datum, t.ex. "Sankt Olofs kyrka i Falköping sept 2011" eller "StOlofskyrka Falköping 2011-09-22" eller "Falköping StOlof church 2011".

Vad gäller kategorier så är det får man leta reda på de som främst svarar på frågorna Vad? och Var?. Kategorierna "Churches" och "Falköping" skulle då vara lämpliga utgångspunkter för att sedan se om det finns några ännu mer passande underkategorier och då gärna en som kombinerar Vad? och Var?, t.ex. en kategori kallad "Churches in Falköping". Man hittar då kategorin "Churches in Falköping Municipality" och dess underkategori "Sankt Olofs kyrka, Falköping". När man börjar bli van vid kategorierna så kan man börja skapa de nya kategorier som behövs.

Hello Bullenwächter! I have given Hallonflickan her own category, so now the Category:Hallonflickan belongs to the Category:Bog bodies. Because of that it is no need for the files in the Hallonflickan category to also belong to the Bog bodies category.

Två fornminnesrelaterade frågor[edit]

Hej. Jag har två snabba frågor till dig relaterade till Fornminnen och WLM2012.

Jag håller på att försöka bygga en mer allmän fornminnesfaktaruta för användning på sv.wiki. Tanken är att den dels ska kunna ersätta dagens mall för runstenar men även kunna användas för övriga typer av fornminnen samt även för fornminnen från andra länder (åtminstone de med liknande system). Mallen byggs just nu på sv:Användare:Lokal Profil/Testmall6 så titta gärna förbi ifall du har synpunkter/förslag.

Den andra frågan gäller uppdelningen av fornminneslistorna inför WLM2012. Som jag nämnde på User_talk:Lokal_Profil#Untangle_Sweden så finns risken att listorna blir väldigt stora om vi inte finner en bra uppdelning. Om du har tankar kring detta så är de väldigt välkomna. Eftersom urvalet av fornminne av tekniska anledningar inte blev exakt det som vi kom överens om undrar jag även ifall du har tid/lust att ta en titt på den slutliga listan. Med tanke på att det är många fler objekt än ditt tidigare urval så tänkte jag att du kanske kan se ifall det är nått som bör plockas bort. Urvalet kan ses på [1] och jag kan ge dig tillgång till själva listan ifall du är intresserad.

Fornminnesfaktarutan du håller på med ser bra ut. Vad gäller urvalslistan så kan jag tänka mig att "militär mötesplats", "kåta", "stalotomt", "tomtning" och "viste" är svåra att känna igen och att fotografera. Den snabba titt jag gjorde på "kåta" visar att det främst verkar vara fråga om platser där det stått kåtor. Jag har dock liten erfarenhet av dessa fornlämningstyper eftersom "kåta", "stalotomt" och "viste" är norrländska (samiska) fornlämningstyper och "tomtning" är nästan uteslutande kustbundet (främst Bohuslän och Norrland). / Achird (talk) 06:20, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jag har nu kikat lite mer på "kåta", "stalotomt" och "viste" (totalt 3219 träffar). Dessa lämningar är i stort sett samma sak, d.v.s. gamla samiska boplatser med rester av olika slags kåtor. Av de 37 slumpvis utvalda poster jag kontrollerade var endast 2 ännu stående kåtor och 2 var ihoprasade kåtor. I alla övriga fall rörde det sig om kåtatomter/stalotomter, d.v.s. en låg vall efter var väggen varit och/eller rester av en härd (skillnaden mellan kåtatomt och stalotomt är att stalotomten har golvytan något lägre än omgivande mark), eller endast uppgifter om att där ska ha funnits en kåta. Kåtatomter och stalotomter är helt klart svåra att fotografera på ett tillfredsställande sätt. Med risk för att vara etnocentrisk, så föreslår jag att vi utelämnar "kåta", "stalotomt" och "viste" från urvalslistan. Den specialintresserade kan ju ändå leta upp dem och försöka fota dem. Finns det kanske folk från nordsamiska wikipeda (sewp) som är intresserade av en egen urvalslista med bara samiska lämningar? / Achird (talk) 07:35, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jag har nu gått igenom alla militära mötesplatser (28 st). Av dessa utgörs hälften av sådana där inget finns att se, en fjärdedel utgörs av minnesstenar och en fjärdedel består av husgrunder, skjutbanevallar eller skyttegravar. Använder jag mig därtill av värdet "Fast fornlämning" i fältet "Antikvarisk bedömning" så får jag bara 6 träffar, varav 3 är efter husgrunder eller skyttegravar, 1 är en minneststen, medan resterande 2 är mer ointressanta. Hej. Manga tack for hjalpen. Jag borde ha klargjort att urvalet ar lamningstyperna ovan samt att antikvarisk bedömning maste vara "Fast fornlämning". Om du trots detta tror att det ar lampligt sa sorterar jag bort militär mötesplats, tomtning, kåta, stalotomt, och viste baserat pa din rekomendering. Vad tror du om "Bytomt/gårdstomt"?

Jag ska aven forsoka flytta ut Testmall6 till mallnamnrymden (t.ex. sv:Mall:Fornminne). Ska bara forsoka forenkla den lite forst sa att det ar enklare att ange objektid och ha lanken automatiskt genererad.

Vad gäller de samiska lämningstyperna Kåta, Stalotomt och Viste så tycker jag att vi kan utesluta dem. Vill någon fotografera dem så är det ju bara att söka upp dem i FMIS Fornsök. Det rör sig totalt om 1322 fasta fornlämningar.

Samma sak med den kustbundna lämningstypen Tomtning: Jag tycker att vi utelämnar den och låter de intresserade leta upp dem själva. Det rör sig om 2033 fasta fornlämningar.

Vad gäller lämningstyperna Militär anläggning övrig, Militär mötesplats och Område med militära anläggningar så finns de mest intressanta troligen i BBR och resterade kan lämnas åt de specialintresserade att leta upp på egen hand.

Bytomt/gårdstomt: I många fall finns det inget att fotografera alls. Ingår det husgrunder så borde dessa fångas upp av lämningstypen Husgrund, historisk tid. Återigen kan den specialintresserade leta upp dessa tomter på egen hand, varför vi kan skippa lämningstypen. Jag gissar att jag är en av dem, som vet mest om kategorier för svenska fornlämningar här på Commons. Kategoriträdet för fornlämningar är i allmänhet i rätt bedrövligt skick. Huvudskälet till detta är att icke-arkeologer gör helt olika kategoriseringar än arkeologer, samt att arkeologer i olika länder har olika system som inte överensstämmer med varandra. Jag har mest ägnat mig åt att kategorisera svensk och nordisk arkeologi här på Commons. Runstenar i Sverige är väl det enda som det varit bra ordning på under en längre tid. Sådant som dösar (se Category:Dolmens in Sweden), gånggrifter (se Category:Passage graves in Sweden), hällkistor (se Category:Hällkistor i Sverige) och hällristningar (se Category:Petroglyphs in Sweden) i Sverige har jag fått ordning på. Kolla in Categories created by Achird så ser du vilka kategorier jag skapat. Oftast har jag städat i föräldrakategorierna till de kategorier jag skapat, så du kan få en hyfsad bild av vad jag gjort på det sättet. Hello Bullenwächter! Sadly I don't think there are a Swedish term for "earthwork" (and I don't know any in Danish or Norwegian neither). The closest we have in Swedish is vallanläggningar (sing. vallanläggning, compare the similar German word Wallanlage) which is earthworks excluding barrows, mounds, and tumuli. / Achird (talk) 09:37, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nej, tyvärr har jag ingen bättre bild på den Wäsenbergska familjens huvudvapen, vilket tros vara upphängt i samband med ryttmästare Johan Wäsenbergs begravning 1684. Denne Wäsenberg var ägare till Väsmestorps by, som hans farfader tagit namnet efter, och Torrevalla gård, som han tydligen ägde genom gifte med en dotter till landshövding Carl Siggesson Rosendufva, i Sörby socken. Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Universidad de Coímbra, Portugal, 2012-05-10, DD 38.JPG[edit]

Hello Achird, I made some changes in the direction that you suggested (and others, esp. crop): I increased the overall exposition and increased the dynamic range for the whole picture. What I did not do was a separate increase of contrast for the sky and the rest mostly due to 2 reasons, I don't understand what the benefit would be and I don't know how to do it (although I am close since I work to improve my knowledge of Photoshop). Har just laddat upp en bild på ett "Grav- och boplatsområde", som du inte hade angivit ngt för.

Intressant! Jag ska kika närmare på olika lämpliga kategorier då ingen bra kategori ännu finns. En kombination av en underkategori till Necropolises in Sweden och en underkategori till Ruins in Sweden tror jag skulle kunna bli bra. När vi ändå är inne på ämnet, var klagar man bäst över hur markägaren/förvaltaren behandlar tillgängligheten till ett gravfält? Vem ägaren är, vet jag inte. MEd tanke på hur det fält ser ut, och hur den var skyltad, är jag ganska övertygad om att de fått bidrag till att göra området just tillgängligt. Hej. Tack för ditt rejäla arbete på User:Achird/Lämningstyper WLM 2012. Jag har funderat på att försöka automatiskt föreslå kategorier när bilderna laddas upp från listorna på wiki. Min tanke är att man baserat på typ kan matcha med de kategorier du plockat fram. Eftersom denna kategorien skulle föreslås för alla bilder av den typen så har jag valt den översta kategorin i de fall där du angivit flera. I vissa fall har jag varit osäker på om du menar att två kategorier alltid passar eller om det är den ena eller den andra baserat på omständigheterna (t.ex. Grav- och boplatsområde). Matchningen finns på sv:Användare:Lokal Profil/Testmall1 (redigeringsläge krävs). Hojta till ifall jag missförstått/missat nått. /Lokal _Profil 15:21, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Det kan vara en bra idé att automatiskt föreslå kategorier utifrån den lämningstyp FMIS anger. För en del lämningstyper så finns det kategorier som stämmer exakt, men för andra lämningstyper så saknas rätt kategorier. Den översta kategorin ska vara den som gäller för hela lämningstypen, men jag får kolla upp att jag varit konsekvent. När det gäller just "Grav- och boplatsområde" så bör båda kategorierna användas tillsammans. För en del lämningstyper kunde man föreslå olika alternativ, som uppladdaren får välja mellan.

Brunn/kallkälla = Water wells and springs in Sweden eller någon av underkategorierna Water wells in Sweden eller Springs of Sweden.
Fästning/skans = Fortifications in Sweden eller någon av underkategorierna Fortresses in Sweden eller Sconces in Sweden.
Husgrund, förhistorisk/medeltida = Ruins in Sweden eller underkategorin Prehistoric ruins in Sweden.
Runristning = Runic inscriptions in Sweden eller underkategorin Runestones of Sweden.
Stenkammargrav = Megalithic graves in Sweden eller någon av underkategorierna Dolmens in Sweden, Passage graves in Sweden eller Hällkistor i Sverige.
Stenkrets = Stone circles in Sweden eller underkategorierna Stone ships in Sweden eller Judge circles in Sweden.
Stensättning = Flat burial cairns in Sweden eller underkategorin Treudd.

För en lämningstyp behöver man kanske kunna välja en kombination:

Grav- och boplatsområde = Necropolises in Sweden tillsammans med Prehistoric ruins in Sweden eller bara en av dem.

För några lämningstyper finns det ännu inte heltäckande kategorier:

Bildristning = Picture stones of Sweden (Kategorin täcker bara 90 % av lämnings-typen, men det är onödigt att skapa ytterligare en kategori för att täcka in endast 8 fasta fornlämningar.)
Grav markerad av sten/block = Främst Standing stones in Sweden (täcker 92 %) eller Gravtypen uppallad sten i Sverige (täcker 3 %), men kategorier för Klumpsten (5 %) och Blockgrav (0,2 %) saknas ännu. Likaså saknas en kategori som täcker hela lämningstypen. Här får jag fundera mer.
Minnesmärke = Monuments and memorials in Sweden (för vid kategori) eller underkategorierna Crosses in Sweden eller Memorial stones in Sweden och/eller Inscriptions in Sweden?? Även här får jag fundera mer.

Täcker de "allt" sådant som finns i fmis, eller täcker det bara sådant som är "fasta fornlämningar" enligt Wikipedias listor? - Jag tänker på alla kyrkoruiner, begravningsplatser, hembygdsgårdar, milstolpar, övergivna "vägar", platser med tradition, avrättningsplatser, fiskelägen, mvmm. Hm, jag kom att ställa samma fråga till mig själv igår, eftersom jag automatiskt tänkt att "Archaeological monuments in..." täcker allt i FMIS. Jag antar dock att det bara är det, som har värdet "Fast fornlämning" i fältet "Antikvarisk bedömning", som ska hamna där, medan resten hamnar i "Cultural heritage monuments in...". Man får dock tänka på att "fast fornlämning" används i FMIS bara som den högsta skyddsklassen och inte som någon slags allmän term för lämningar från forntiden. / Achird (talk) 12:37, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Kompassros[edit]

(En tråd, två frågor!) Var i Nordingrå igår och fann då två gravrösen "Nordingrå 30:1 och 32:1". Det skulle även finnas en "kompassros" (30:3) nära den förstnämnda. Den återfann jag aldrig (inte heller stensättningen eller boplatsgropen), men du vet hur det är, man ser inte alla klapperstensfält för alla stenar ibland. - Hur gammal kan en sådan "kompassros" vara? Berget heter "kompassberget" dessutom och det är väl ingen tillfällighet. Området har gott om fornlämningar både yngre (fiskelägen) och äldre (kuströsen), och är även ett gammalt tillhåll för "Gävlefiskare". Y-näsmannen (talk) 10:30, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FMIS Fornsök ligger nere för stunden, men jag hittade följande anteckning från 1949 i Ortnamnsregistret: "Uppe på berget är stenar lagda i alla åtta kompassriktningarna." (Kompassberget) Nu funkar Fornsök igen och jag fick fram följande beskrivning för RAÄ-nr Nordingrå 30:3: "Kompassros, formad som en kompassnål, 2,5x2 meter (NNÖ-SSV), bestående av ett enkelt lager lagda stenar, vanligen 0,25-0,3 meter stora, vid ändarna 0,5-0,6 meter stora." En enkel rad med stenar som pekar mot norr kallas väderstreckspil, men denna kompassros verkar vara mer avancerad än så. Dessutom verkar den vara längst åt NNÖ och inte åt N. De mindre stenarna kan eventuellt vara undansparkade av någon oförsiktig person, vilket kan göra att kompassrosen är svår att känna igen. Att det ligger på en klapperstensvall kan ju också försvåra, precis som du påpekade. Kompassrosor är inte precis min specialitet, men jag skulle gissa att den är någonstans mellan 80 och 300 år gammal. / 12:37, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Uppsala amulet ring: Freyr, Thor, Odin[edit]

Hello!

I am a professional blacksmith specialising in small scale Viking themed metalwork. I have had a request to recreate this amulet ring. I tried to locate the original archaelogical finds to use as the base for my version of this amulet ring, but failed to do so. Would you mind sharing images of the original pendants with me, or helping me in getting contact with the blacksmith who made the amulet ring in the picture?

Sadly I don't know who made this amulet ring. There are many archaeological finds in this style, especially from the province of Uppland, but as far as I know none of them looks exactely like this one. The originals are all very corroded. Here are some links to such finds in the collections of The National Historical Museum of Sweden.

That is pretty much what I found out. Is there any consensus amongst Swedish archaeology on what was the purpose of these rings. Some of the larger ones look like they can be opened/closed and are large enough to wear. What also baffles me is the multiples of hammers on one ring and varying level of skill on them, even on the same ring. Most do not look like they have been carefully made and some of the hangings on them are very simple, as if made by several different people, with various level of skill.

People speak of oath rings in Viking context. Could it be that each pendant was made to symbolize an oath, alliance, wish or prayer? I understand that basic blacksmithing was a skill most people had during the Viking age, due to the necessity of creating and maintaining farmstead tools and fixtures. To me the level of skill on these pendants would suggest that most of them where not made by specialist blacksmiths. It would be really interesting to see a metallurgical analysis of the different pendants on one of the large rings, to establish whether they where made from the same batch of iron, or multiples.

I think that there is consensus amongst Swedish archaeologist that these rings had some sort of ritual/religious functions. Hello! I noticed you're moving all the media from "Germanic Heathenism" to "Germanic Neopaganism". Actually, I think that "Heathenism" is a more proper name, since it's preferred in the current Germanic Pagan discourse and academical writing in English language. --Wewelsburger (talk) 13:41, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The aim for Wikimedia is to describe things from a neutral point of view. "Germanic Neopaganism" is the only name that is describing this religion (or set of religions) in a somewhat neutral way. Not all Germanic Neopagans fully agree on the name "Heathenism" and many of them do not agree on describing it as an "ethnic religion", so thus we have to use the term "Germanic Neopaganism". / Achird (talk) 14:13, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Most English-language Heathens refuse the term "Pagan" and prefer "Heathen", because it's a Germanic name and "Pagan" is mostly associated to other kinds of religion. "Heathen" is specific to Germanic religion, since in many Germanic languages there's the distinction between "Heidentum" and "Paganismus" even more clearly than in English. You in Swedish have Heden which has the same root. Well, Forn Sed Sweden and probably some other Scandinavian "Heathens" actually prefer to use "Pagan" and "Paganism" instead of "Heathen" and "Heathenism" when speaking English. See for example Samfundet Forn Sed Sverige: In English.

Oh, there are some Norse pagans here in Sweden that state that Asatro, Forn Sed, Nordisk Sed, and Nordisk shamanism are different religions, so it's not that easy. Many also state that Scandinavian Ásatrú and American Ásatrú is two very different religions. What I actually meant is that "Germanic Neopaganism" and "Heathenism" are the same thing, an umbrella label/category comprehending: American Asatru, Scandinavian Asatru, Forn Sed, Nordisk Sed, Odinism, Theodism, Urglaawe, Alte Sitte, and Armanism, which are, of course, different religious traditions. From the information given in the descriptions they seemed to be obvious copyvios to me, and I still think some of the other logos you have uploaded could be copyvios. Now the files are deleted, so I can't check them again to see if I overlooked something. If it could be pointed out that an organisation itself licence its logo as CC-BY-SA or similar it would be another case totally. In the case of the Geferraeden Fyrnsida logo the information that it is made from that file also makes it another case. And if a logo is made by yourself you should be pointed out as author. Bytomt[edit]

Hej! Jag tänkte försöka samla ihop alla bilder på bytomter enligt FMIS i en kategori, men har ingen som helst aning om vad det kan tänkas heta på engelska. Har du något förslag? /Jssfrk (talk) 07:28, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bytomt kan översättas med "village site" på engelska och jag antar att det täcker in vad gemene man menar med bytomt. Problemet är dock att fornlämningstypen "bytomt/gårdstomt" är mer specialiserad än så. "Definition: Lämningar efter skattlagd eller mantalssatt bebyggelseenhet. Kommentar: Indikeras av kulturlager, husgrunder eller andra lämningar." En bytomt i FMIS ska alltså alltid vara lämningar av en tidigare skattepliktig bebyggelse där samtliga delar upphört. Ja, "Bytomt/gårdtomt" och "husgrund, historisk tid" överlappar varandra ordentligt, då "Bytomt/gårdstomt" är en samlingsbeteckning på flera intilliggande "Husgrund, historisk tid" e.d. Ett problem med Category:Historical village sites in Sweden är väl att "historical village" ofta avser det vi kallar "fornby" eller större hembygdsgård, d.v.s. en by med gamla hus.

Att använda RAÄs definitioner på arkeologiska lämningar i andra länder kan f.ö. vara lurigt, vilket följande lilla galleri kan visa. / Achird (talk) 13:43, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I september genomför vi fototävlingen Wiki Loves Monuments igen.

Thanks for replacing categories of months in Sweden with months in Swedish counties. Starting in the year 2000, this also applies to churches photographed by year (for example Category:Churches in Västra Götaland County photographed in 2008). This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. Som vanligt ingår naturreservat och nationalparker, biosfärområden och naturminnen i tävlingen! Nytt för i år är att vi utöver bästa foto även belönar fotograferande av tidigare ofotograferade objekt samt bästa bildserie om minst tio fotografier av samma objekt. Tävlingen börjar 1 maj, och pågår under hela maj månad. Om du har varit ute i världen och rest kan du även se om resorna sammanfaller med övriga internationella deltävlingar, och i så fall vara med och tävla även där. Expeditioner, fotosafari eller en helt vanlig promenad? Via en smidig karta som visar ditt närområde hittar du bra ställen att besöka – eller varför inte damma av fotoalbumen och tävla med bilder du har tagit tidigare?

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in Round 1 of the 2022 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2022.

If you want to take part in WSC2023, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Russia), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them.
