First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Hi, I have reverted your edits at Template:Occupation/zh-hans and created Template:Occupation/zh-hant. It is sometimes annoying that Commons does not automatically do the conversion but as long as the conversion is not automatic, it is better to have a separate version for the two "languages". In this case, Google translate (and other softwares) does a good job in less than a second. The only thing is that we should think of doing it each time we update a version, if both versions have words that other other does not have, it is much more difficult to do.--Zolo (talk) 06:48, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

template:technique[edit]

One other template that would require to translate a long list is template:technique. However, we first need to have a robust version of the template. How would translate "drawing on paper" and "oil on canvas mounted panel" (meaning oil painting on a canvas nailed to a wood plank). Hi, i'm sorry for the conflict of version : when i started the upload, my page was not showing yet your uploads of the original version. I did just like you, in fact, but you were faster. I didn't meant to revert you, sorry .

Hello,
We all need to know which classification you follow + have it written in the categories.
For example Category:Pomatomidae: clealy all the source provided in the page say Perciformes!
Perhaps they are old fashioned, but you cannot say that without saying which source you follow.
Wikispecies is not a source: wikispecies:Pomatomidae: no source (a shame), wikispecies:Scombriformes: a source but with an invalid page: https://sites.google.com/site/guilleorti/home/Classification_v3.htm.
Wikispecies has always been a shame in term of sources and references.

Please refer the original source here https://bmcevolbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12862-017-0958-3. I did give the link during previous discussion. For more sources, You may refer to EoL, NCBI, and also Fossilwork. Even FishBase, has also stated the Deepfin classification. All of them are based on the classification above. Traditionally, family Pomatomidae is part of order Perciformes, which content more than 160 families. But recent researcher are more likely to separate them to more independent orders. As what the Deepfin group done, Perciformes would be reduced to only 61 families. About 30++ new orders would be create. Both systems are alternatively, widely using by many websites. About "Betancur 2017", do you think it would be a correct name?
You can see in template:Taxasource the existing sources: Bouchet et al. (2010), Bouchet & Rocroi (2005), Chase (2003)...
It would be best if the name was short, it cannot contain " & " (reason why it is "Bouchet&Rocroi2005" not "Bouchet & Rocroi2005")
