Borders in Caucasia[edit]

For a larger projects, I am currently collecting border changes in Caucasia after WWI. You have drawn some maps that might be relevant for the issue, regarding changes of the Russian-Georgian boundaries. What are the sources of them?--Antemister (talk) 18:32, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Antemister Hello. If you mean the maps of Abkhazia, then the borders are marked according to the instructions of User:Surprizi. I just created a file. გიო ოქრო (talk) 18:48, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Antemister Hello. Yes we create together maps which are created according sources. Please indicate which maps are you talking about and after that we can discuss borders and sources. My dear friend what's happened in your native wikipedia, why are you blocked?--Surprizi (talk) 19:02, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick reply, what I doing is building a date-by-date on all border changes in the 20th century, see de:Benutzer:Antemister/Weltkarten for an older draft in German (now I have an updated Excel table in English, can send it to you if you want). The border changes of the three Caucasian republics is a very difficult issue, numerous, often small-scale border changes took place, the scale on general maps is usually too small and sources are contradicting. Up to now, I have the atlas of Artur Tsutsiev [1] (you might know, likely the best source for that topic), Hewson's Historical Atlas on Armenia [2] (not very useful) and an Azerbaijan National Atlas [3], in addition Hovannisian's four-volume reference book on the armenian republic. Next week I hope to get also [4] from Georgia, as this book is only Georgian, I would appreciate if you can translate some phrase here and there. But for the moment it is rather about the border between Georgia and Russia.

The table needs a) date, b) territory involved, and c) map (ideally 1:1.000:000), for Georgia-Russia I have identified up to now these four border changes. Can you give your comments about it?

18.09.1918 Sochi district annexed by Georgia File:Sochi Okrug of Black Sea Governorate.png ???
06.02.1919 Sochi district back to Russia
07.05.1920 Border correction at Abkhazia (File:Sukhum Okrug map (1883-1920)-en.svg or one of the other maps of that series?)
12.05.1920 Dvaletia and Darial gorge to Russia (File:Relief map of Dvaleti.svg, no map of Darial gorge yet)

What happened in the German WP? I wrote ironically the word Zigeuner, i. e. the German word for gypsy. Usually considered as little than a derogatory term, some people regard using that word in any context, even as a quotation as such an insult that they don't want to talk to you anymore after they have heard that you have used. So an admin blocked me immediately. Wanted to protest, but than decided against, will do that when that map project is ready for publication.--Antemister (talk) 21:59, 29 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dvaleti: „In 1801, when the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti was annexed by the Russian Empire, Dvaleti was within its borders. According to the administrative division of the Russian Empire, Dvaleti was included in the Gori Uyezd of the Tbilisi Governorate under the name - "Nara Uchastok". In 1859, Bariatinsky, the governor of the Caucasus, "gave" Dvaleti to the Terek district.“ (ka:დვალეთი). After that, this territory was no longer part of Georgia. გიო ოქრო (talk) 09:52, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Black See Governatore. Borders with Sukhumi Okrug till 1920 year was same. It was changed in 25 December 1904 year (Полное собрание законов Российской империи, собрание 3-ое, т. XXIV, ბრძ. 25568, გვ. 1233-1234). Use also this source.--Surprizi (talk) 12:28, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good so far, just to understand it correct, Dvaleti was not part of Georgia at that time anymore? Then Tsutsiev (on which I primarily rely) was wrong with that. Looking at File:Democratic Republic of Georgia 1919-1921.png, for the non-Abkhazian areas, the brighter red line, i. e. todays border is relevant?--Antemister (talk) 21:58, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Then regarding Abkhazia, there are already three excellent maps, but two only in Georgian, thus not understandable to me. Could you translate the explanation?

--Antemister (talk) 21:58, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • first File:Sukhum Okrug map (1883-1920)-ka.svg/File:Sukhum Okrug map (1883-1920)-en.svg already have English version.
  • second is map of Abkhazia like as administrative entity of Georgian Democratic Republic. Into Georian we call it ოლქი (same Oblast). In earliest period it called ოკრუგი (Okrug). This map was creating according agreement between Georgian DR and RSFSR. Inside this agreement is showing in details that border is starting from the river Psou (but not in whole, partly). This border was till 1921 year when Soviet russian ocupied Georgian DR. You can translate this article.
  • After soviet ocupation RSFSR cut part of Gagra district and same you can reed in article below. So Georgian SSR several years fighting in the court to give back border which was agreed on 1920 year. Finly Georgian governem on 1929 reaches more then border was on 1920 year. After 1929 year from nowdays border is situateod on the river Psou.--Surprizi (talk) 12:49, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Have included that information into my list, according to the linked article the 1921 border change took place (at least de jure) in April 1922, is that correct? For the three minor border changes in at Dvalet, Darial Gorge and Mount Khakhalgi, I'll ask Artur Tsutiev, or do you have information on that?--Antemister (talk) 06:22, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding, the other borders in that area and that time (Georgia-Armenia, Armenia Azerbaijan), are other users whom I could ask about?--Antemister (talk) 06:25, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If we take 1920 year Moscow agreement, there we will read agreed border between Georgia and Soviet Russia. As I know border was on the mount Caucasus and Dvaleti is impossible to be in DR Georgia. After that on that region was controlled by Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus and I dont think that in that period Dvaleti was part of Georgia. I also can show you map of Georgia of 1928 year. Border between Abkhazia (Georgia) and Russia on the river Psou was finly changed after 1929 year. In norther Caucasus situation was changed after februar revolution, where politicals of tht regin decide to create own region. So de jure and de facto border was on Main Caucasian Range. As I know we have not in hand any oficial documents.--Surprizi (talk) 17:09, 2 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Have now obtained the historical atlas of Georgia by David Levan Muskhelishvili. Good & and relevant maps, but unfortunately only Georgian und not translatable using Word Lens. Could one of you translate the legends of the relevant maps for me?--Antemister (talk) 15:23, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. გიო ოქრო (talk) 19:12, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Just send me an eMail, than I send you the images.--Antemister (talk) 20:47, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
