The Project's Story[edit]

This project was created to help my girlfriend get excited for the autumnal season and for me to explore my passion of the public domain. To that end I put together a gallery of paintings, illustrations, advertisements, and more to help craft an overall mood. My focus was on works that had entered into the public domain rather than openly licensed works like Creative Commons. This ended up skewing older and primarily focusing on works through 1927, however there are some outliers that go beyond that point.

Hallowe'en by Ozias Dodge. I uploaded this work as well as created the creator tag for Dodge.

In my search for materials I sourced many that already existed, but I also uploaded some of the works in this collection. Furthermore, while working on this I updated the metadata associated with works to more accurately display their source, authors, date of creation, and their license terms for international copyright.

The project was quite fun to do, and I enjoyed the ways in which it challenged me to explore and learn more about the complexities of categorizing across Wikimedia Commons. By doing this I have become more adept in sourcing specific materials as well as personally categorizing and sorting out my own works. It also inspired me to take up work on other projects like my organizing of The Saturday Evening Post. Finally, I found it to be incredibly useful in showing me the importance of accurate and precise metadata across platforms including on Wikidata.
