Here's a page with a few of the portraits for which I have looked around on the web, but can't find any definitive ID - they are a mystery to me, and could be a bit of fun for people to stretch their investigative skills. Without more information, these images are unlikely to be of any use.
These portraits are mostly from the Wellcome Collection, which means that they are related to the medical profession in some way. The Wellcome collection naming for some of the uploads is incorrect however, so there is always the chance that what it says on the description isn't what it actually is. A few examples:
-
"George Figlioli" - corrected to "Giglioli"
-
"Pauliau" - identified as "Renaud Paulian"
-
"Portrait of Charles Mayo"
-
"Johann Dartlieb" - corrected to Hartlieb (on multiple instances)
-
Identified as Michael Foster, name corrected from "Caricature portrait of Sir James Crichton-Browne"
-
Renamed from "W. Mistla" on the filename to William Whitla
-
Renamed from "an undidentified man" to Ronald Ross
-
Renamed from William Frederick Haslau, as it looks like Frederick Belding Power and no hits whatsoever for the name it had.
-
Renamed from "Louis Pasteur. Photograph by Nadar".
-
Found that these are "the Rosses - Ronald and Donald"... maybe the reason for the somewhat amused look on Donald's face :) It is unclear (and judging from the posture, unlikely) the two were related)
And then:
Deadstar moved page
- File:Portrait of Georges Isidor Widal Wellcome M0005177.jpg to File:Portrait of Charles Jacques Bouchard Wellcome M0005177.jpg - after looking at other pictures in the Widal category, I had a hunch it wasn't Widal.
- File:Portrait of Etienne Sergent Wellcome L0011996.jpg to File:Portrait of Edmond Sergent Wellcome L0011996.jpg... caption reads Edmond, not Etienne... and File:Portrait of Edmond Sergent Wellcome L0011997.jpg to File:Portrait of Etienne Sergent Wellcome L0011997.jpg... caption reads Etienne, not Edmond... :)
- Particularly happy with this one: File:Sydenham Medical Club (1796-1928) Wellcome L0028264.jpg to File:Lhyfr o fedheginiaeth a physygwriae Wellcome L0028264.jpg & File:Lhyfr o fedheginiaeth a physygwriae. Wellcome L0028262.jpg to File:Sydenham Medical Club members list 1795 - 1806. Wellcome L0028262.jpg as I don't speak Welsh and was wondering what was in that picture for a while. Digging around based on the Wellcome number found the right description for both files.
- File:Sir William John Ritchie Simpson. Photograph by Elliott & Fr Wellcome M0002436.jpg to File:T.A. Smith Lecturer on Anatomy, Physiology, and Chemistry Wellcome M0002436.jpg... another one where the image states who is depicted, and it didn't match the file name. Now who exactly TA Smith is, is still a bit of a mystery.
- File:An unidentified man, wearing academic robes. Photograph afte Wellcome V0027370.jpg to File:Pierre Marie, neurologist, wearing academic robes. Wellcome V0027370.jpg after a quick TinEye search.
- File:Garrett-Jones and J. Andrews. Photograph. Wellcome V0028101.jpg to File:Garrett-Jones and Austin Kerr. Photograph. Wellcome V0028101.jpg - an interesting one, I would have never caught this if I had not created my gallery of malariologists. The second man in the photo is not Justin Andrews, but Austin Kerr, all based on IDs by LJ Bruce-Chwatt.
- File:An unidentified man holding a cane. Photograph by Nadar. Wellcome V0028208.jpg to File:Professor Charles Friedel. Photograph by Nadar. Wellcome V0028208.jpg. I suspected that there would be other photos from this session as Nadar was a famous photographer in his day. A lot of trawling through Nadar photos on commons & ID found on this file which came from here on Getty images.
- File:An unidentified man. Photograph, signed indistinctly on the Wellcome V0027373.jpg to File:Sir Felix Semon. Photograph, signed indistinctly on the Wellcome V0027373.jpg. With a little help from en:User:Wmsch on my talk page, file moved from "Unidentified man" to Sir Felix Semon per http://libsys.wellcomelibrary.org/record=b1162129.
- File:Ignacio Forres Palilla. Photograph. Wellcome V0028265.jpg and File:Ignazio Torres. Photograph. Wellcome V0028804.jpg - the same person, determined to be Mexican obstetrics pioneer "Jose Ignacio Torres Padilla"
Sherlock, we need help on these please![edit]
As far as I can see, there are two candidates, but the images on the below linked biographies do not match this one. As it is a file from the Wellcome collection it is a figure from medical history:
The other option is that this image is mislabeled as being "Heinrich Braun". |
Looked for "S. Laskey" in relation to research, physician, medical, but not coming up with any leads. Photo dates to early 20th century I reckon? Any suggestions? |
Arthur Connell, military medical personnel. Service stripes on the arms, medical pin on the collar and black armband. British army insignia on forearm? Great example of the uniform I'd say - if only we knew what it was exactly! Update: It could be en:Arthur_Connell! Except that I can't find any military service for him, and he died in 1863, so the picture looks a bit too recent? More digging... [Update]: The cap badge is the Staff Officers Royal Dragoon Cap Badge WWI. The badge on his lapel is for the RAMC. So far no luck in finding the name with that added info. |
I can't find any confirmation that this is Scottish vet Finlay Dun (1830-1897), the photo also seems to be too recent for it to be him. Who is he? |
So... Google can't find me anyone called "Sir Andrew Lillyon", and "Lillyon" is a very unusual term/name. I have tried related searches (people named "Sir Andrew", Billyon? William?) as I now think there might be a typo in the name. Closest I found is a portrait of physician Andrew_Halliday. Is this the same guy?? |
I tried all sorts of searches. Liliu doesn't seem to really exist as a name. However, there are some hits in the medical field for "Lilliu" and "Lilius". But none that quite fit the mid-1950s timeline I am guessing for this photo. Tried search in combination with (Leonard Bruce-)"Chwatt" (he may have taken the photo), WHO, malaria... Who is he?

There are two men named John Abercrombie a physician (1781-1844) and a horticulturalist (1726–1806). Wellcome may have files of both, but if we assume that the first portrait is true to life for the physician, then the other two don't match either of those, really. More info needed.

Georg Winter[edit]
Wellcome states that this is historian Carl Georg Ludwig Winter (1856-1912), but the image on the biography site at his university doesn't look like the same guy --> Magdeburg university. This professor in the digital collections of Copenhagen university seems to be the same guy as the below two, but it doesn't have any further information. It may be the professor, gynaecologist, and director of the Universitats-Frauenklinik in Konigsberg de:Georg Winter (Mediziner).

Miss Pailthorpe[edit]
-
After a couple of years, the doubt surrounding her identity was resolved. Info on her life on the talkpage.
Other[edit]
-
An unknown man named "Smith". Yes... It's a nice smiling portrait. Would be nice to know who this is. but (judging from filename) tropical medicine specialist.
-
No information at all, but (judging from filename) tropical medicine specialist.
-
And another from the Royal Society of Tropical medicine. It states "R.M.Pendreigh", but I can't find any information on this name in relation to medicine.
-
Photo name identifies this person as William Bayliss, but he is not. See Category:William Bayliss for comparison.
-
This lovely portrait is of a woman called Sylvia Browne, who unfortunately has a very famous name-sake born in the year this image was taken (1907), making it impossible for me to find any info on any other person named Sylvia Browne. It could be she is the wife/daughter of a physician (it is in the Wellcome collection after all), but can't find any physicians named Browne that would fit the profile either.
-
I had a look around for this John Lilly too, but no luck. The portrait is similar in style to File:John C. Lord.png (ruffled shirt, pointy hair), so am dating it to mid 19th century. But that's all.
-
Unlikely to be Arthur Farre as billed
-
"Albrecht von Graefe" but he doesn't look like the other images in Category:Albrecht von Graefe (physician)
-
Who's the guy with the pince-nez on the left?
-
Kristian Mauguble - the name is unlikely to be correct. Cool expression on his face
-
This is labelled "Sir George Elliston, in uniform, but that refers to this file. Unclear who this is, an initial search doesn't yield any results. It may still be George Sampson Elliston, as there don't seem to be any images of him.
-
I don't think this is John Flint South as advertised. No clues just yet.
-
This is not Ratsimamanga. This could be in Lisbon in 1958. Marcel Vaucel and Lumaret (probably) in the background (they wrote a paper together too).
-
Clearly not a medal as name suggests.
what medal is this?[edit]
These three medically trained men have the same medal. It reads "founded 1856" - I presume it refers to the British Medical Association (which evolved into it in 1856, precursors notwithstanding). I cannot find it though> it has a rooster at the top, what looks like a crown and then two people with a staff of Asclepius? It's hard to make out.
