Changes 2007-03-20[edit]

I've made some extensive changes today, based on discussions with Yug (who did most of the initial work on this template) on my user talk page. I'll name the most important ones and give the rationale for them here.

  • Remove the welcome greeting. If the user hasn't already been welcomed to Commons, add {{Welcome}} above this template.
  • Add the heading Authorship claims and moving the template to {{Authorship claims}} to clarify what this is all about.
  • Add text from User:LX/Copyright claims, which is partly based on a village pump post by Yug to clarify legal risks and responsibilities and to name the files in question. I chose not to assume the files have been GNU licensed, but simply that they were claimed to be the work of the uploader by such means as a {{PD-self}} tag or similar. For doubtful permission tags where the uploader doesn't claim to be the author, use {{Nsd}} or {{Npd}} and associated message templates.
  • Simpler formatting and emphasising the central warning message.
  • Removing the assumption that a user has already been blocked. This gives non-admins the ability to use the template, and it gives the uploader a chance to clarify the matter rather than being blocked without warning. Of course, users should still be blocked at the first sign of ignoring this warning.
  • Accounting for the possibility that a block may last longer than the investigation itself the findings indicate bad faith.

It's a bit wordier than I would have liked, but I think it's necessary to convey the important messages. To compensate, the gist of it is highlighted with a red frame and should be readable at a glance.

Hello, maybe you could be interested by a similar template that I made for my own use : {{User:Rama/copyvioblock-en}} and {{User:Rama/copyvioblock-fr}} . Rama 15:56, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The new look on the template changes the purpose of the template, which is to inform a user that he has been blocked so that admins can check if his contributions are copyright violations. The thing is:

  • I want a template that says that a user is blocked so that I can check up on his contributions.

That's all. Could we please have a template that says this? If it is requested to have a template that says something else, can we not create a different template that says so?

Can't we please use discussion first before reverting other people's hard work? The template was edited almost exclusively by Yug, who specifically asked me to make the changes I did.
The new version of the template was worded such that it made it clear that the user may be blocked without further warning, so it did still meet your requirements, but unlike the old template, it didn't presume a block (which means the new template was usable for non-admins too).
As a compromise, I'll move the reverted template back to its old name, {{Wait}}, and restore the new look at the more informatively named {{Authorship claims}}.
