update Scientific name for Yellow-crowned Night-Heron[edit]

Hi,

Based on a range of data, the Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was split from Nycticorax over a decade ago. This change has long been recognized by the American Ornithologists Union Check-list and all major bird guides. Thus, the valid name for this species is Nyctanassa violacea (Linnaeus 1758) and Nycticorax violaceus (Linnaeus 1758) is a synonym. The correct ITIS link ends 174842 rather than 174838. I can't make these changes myself since this section is (appropriately) semi-protected, but I'm hoping someone else will make this update. Thanks!

Hello my friend, thank you for the advice. I have done the changes you said on Nycticorax violaceus and Category:Nycticorax violaceus. I did not rename the pages because it will perhaps be done massively in the future.
You should have edited the talk page of those articles. Next time you can also talk to me directly: User_talk:Liné1.
We are in the process to migrate bird categories and articles to IOC classification 2.3 but it takes time.

Category:Commons species categories[edit]

To allow people to get an overview of Species related categories on Commons, I would like to add:

{{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|Category|[[Category:Commons species categories]]}}

What do you think of that? -- User:Docu at 04:32, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

1) Why do we need to distinguish it as "Commons species"? Is there going to be "Wikipedia species" or "Non-Commons species"? ;) 2) Would the goal be all taxa, i.e. species, genus, family, etc. or just species-level groups? The latter is likely possible but won't be easy, the former I don't think is useful as it would basically be a list of transclusions on categories. 3) Why did you place this request here instead of Template:Taxonavigation (or Template:Taxonavigation/taxon)? This is simply an optional component that deals with various classification systems. Rocket000 (talk) 07:20, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
1) It's a maintenance category which is why I prefixed it with "Commons". Any better name would be fine.
2) The goal would be to provide a basis for comparison with WikiSpecies. Maybe the same should be added a few other templates, e.g. {{Ws}}
3) It's the only sub-page I can edit .. -- User:Docu at 07:21, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If all you want is a list, why not grab it from the list of transclusions? I think the name would be confusing if you added it every taxon category, not just species. Comparison with Wikispecies won't be very useful for numerous reasons. The two main ones being that we use alternate classifications/names (intentionally) and this template isn't applied to every species we have (this part of it especially, that's why it's not protected). {{Ws}} sounds like a better idea, but again, it would just be a list of transclusions, which you already have (also, I noticed {{ws}} is a lot of times applied blindly and there's no such entry on Wikispecies) Rocket000 (talk) 07:41, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Some user have a hard time to compare if it's summarized too much or if they have to go through retrieving transclusions and displaying them. A category is much more convenient for them. Categories also have the additional advantage that they can used to export pages and check for new stuff.
If "/classification" isn't used everywhere, we could add it to {{Taxonavigation}} instead. Using only {{Ws}} would probably miss part of the point. Category:Commons species categories has hiddencat set so confusion is less likely, but we could use another name (e.g. Commons taxoncat). -- User:Docu at 08:21, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Determining that {{Taxonavigation}} is used on a "species" category is not easy. Liné1 (talk) 09:26, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It wouldn't be limited to species. We could use "Commons taxoncat" or another name. -- User:Docu at 09:42, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Much better name as it contains taxon and cat. Cheers Liné1 (talk) 10:12, 9 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the category to Category:Commons taxoncat and added it here and to {{VN}}. If an administrator would add it to {{Taxonavigation}} and {{Ws}} too that would be great. -- User:Docu at 05:16, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Before I do this, do you mind if I change the name to "Taxon categories" since most people won't know what a "taxoncat" is. I'll keep the "commons" part if you think it's necessary but since it's not really a maintenance category per se I don't think it needs it. Rocket000 (talk) 22:35, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok for me. BTW I added it also to {{Taxobox}} and {{Sisterwikispecies}}. Obviously, if you add it to {{Taxonavigation}}, you can remove it from {{Taxonavigation/classification}}. Currently it's at 15,973 subcategories. -- User:Docu at 03:25, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I added it to {{Taxonavigation}}, {{Wikispecies}}, and {{Ws}}. Now see how much it goes up. There's still a lot of taxon categories that have either of these, but it should give us a good idea. Rocket000 (talk) 14:38, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Let's see what happens. Special:MostLinkedTemplates shows about 88,000 for taxonavigation. -- User:Docu at 14:45, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
