False claims[edit]

In the discussion in Commons:Village_pump#Deleting_referenced_images_and_other_oddities I was informed that this template is falsely suggesting that the pictures:

  • follow WPCommons guidelines,
  • are Free,
  • are usable by other Wikimedia projects.

Pictures tagged with this template are not commercially useable without an additional clause (so I was told, which I disagree with) so this template should be probably red and informing everybody that the picture going to be deleted and must not be used unless there is a written permission to... blah blah blah...

Or please go and advise the fellow wikipedians at the pump why this is not valid.

I do not want to change the template because I am not really involved in commons politics. --grin 12:31, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Section 2.2 of the license: You can freely distribute the copies of these works, modified or not, whatever their medium, wherever you wish, for a fee or for free, if you observe all the following conditions. Greetings, TZM de:T/T C 11:59, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I hope no one minds, but I replaced with because I think it looks better. If anyone disagrees, let's discuss it here. Biggo391 23:49, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Macedonian version[edit]

{{editprotected}} Can you pleasee add Template:FAL/mk (the Macedonian version) to the language versions displayed. Thanks a lot. --B. Jankuloski (talk) 01:32, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Already ✓ Done by Waldir per your request on the correct page. --Mormegil (talk) 19:27, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

artlibre.org temporarily (?) offline[edit]

I received queries about the contents of the FAL. So I noticed, the site http://artlibre.org is down at the moment. Shouldn't we temporarily link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Art_license until the art libre site is online again? -- smial (talk) 12:54, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong german translation[edit]

Should read weitergegeben instead of weitergeben:

Copyleft: Dieses Kunstwerk ist frei, es darf weitergegeben und/oder modifiziert werden entsprechend den Bedingungen der Lizenz Freie Kunst. Der vollständige Lizenztext steht auf der Copyleft Attitude-Seite sowie auf anderen Webseiten.

But I don't know how to correct that.

I have written the same sentence at translatewiki.net.

fixed. Multichill (talk) 07:18, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Fix doesn't work. Why ? -- Juergen 91.52.175.163 19:30, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Translation cache is updated once a day somewhere in the night so tomorrow it should work. Multichill (talk) 19:38, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now it works. Thank you. -- Juergen 91.52.179.157 08:09, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ukrainian translation[edit]

Please, add ukrainian translation (instead russian, which appears when link to COMMONS from uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/...) — see http://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Wm-license-fal-text/uk or http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Special:Translations&message=MediaWiki:Wm-license-fal-text. And add interwiki — [[uk:Шаблон:FAL]].

Best regards. -- VolodymyrF 20:38, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orthography[edit]

How can I change the Spanish message?? It has orthography mistakes. Thank you. Kadellar (talk) 16:08, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can change the message at translatewiki. If that's too much trouble you can put the correct message here so someone else can update it for you. Multichill (talk) 16:21, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong link in de-version[edit]

The german link points to an old version (1.1) which is substantially different from the current 1.3 (english), especially regarding the use of images in larger works. could you please change that?--Cirdan (talk) 11:57, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Time to update the German translation at the FAL site? That would be a good change. Or what else would you like to see changed exactly? Multichill (talk) 12:08, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'd like to see a short note that this translation is outdated and a link to a current version in english.--Cirdan (talk) 19:33, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Linking to version 1.1 is not a big issue, as mentioned in chapter 9 of version 1.3-en: "You will always have the choice of accepting the terms contained in the version under which the copy of the work was distributed to you, or alternatively, to use the provisions of one of the subsequent versions." resp. chapter 6 of german version 1.1: "Es bleibt allein Ihnen überlassen, ob Sie sich mit den Festlegungen der Fassung begnügen, in welcher die jeweilige Kopie zu Ihnen gelangt, oder aber sich auf die Festlegungen neuerer Fassungen berufen wollen." -- smial (talk) 16:46, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I know, but the english translation links to 1.3, so does the french. This means that a User with a german interface will believe that the 1.1 conditions apply while a user with an english interface looking at the very same image will believe that version 1.3 applies. That's certainly not a good thing. Either all languages link to the same text (go back to 1.1. for every language?) or there are different FAL-boxes for each version.--Cirdan (talk) 19:33, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd love to have a german translation of FAL 1.3, but we don't have one. I believe we should not change anything in the moment, but someone with good knowledge of french should politely ask for a translation at artlibre.org. I've tried this a year or two ago, but possibly used a dead mail address, or they didn't like my english, as I couldn't write in french. Never received an answer. -- smial (talk) 21:16, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On the practical side: Link can be changed here. Multichill (talk) 21:21, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Criterias for using this template[edit]

I saw this template for the first time today on the Frölundaborg.jpg-page. I have a feeling it is not a free image at all. It seems that it is very easy to just put this template on any image-page without having to explain or prove anything.

Now the image is uploaded to commons with a template telling everyone that it is free to use in any way, but there is a possibility the image is actually copyrighted.
/abbedabbWTF? 19:38, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It is not more easy to use this template in a inapropriate manner than any other licence template else. -- smial (talk) 20:17, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed change for licensetpl_link[edit]

Please see this proposal. /skagedaltalk 20:07, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

License link seems broken?[edit]

It seems the the entire artlibre.org is down; so Rillke copied the license here. What about edit the {{FAL}} and change the link to our local copy? Pinging Jean-Frédéric and Multichill. Jee 09:47, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki:wm-license-fal-full-link should be fixed then. Revicomplaint? 10:01, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Quick fix for French and English by rewriting MediaWiki:Wm-license-fal-full-link and MediaWiki:Wm-license-fal-full-link/fr − but not for other languages. This is actually very annoying to fix, not sure what’s the best course of action is… Jean-Fred (talk) 10:28, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I am also clueless. See gerrit:118740. I would prefer hosting all license texts at WMF-servers, but not inside wikis. However, a toollabs project seems to be too unreliable to me, apart from that they don't like if we send hordes of people to WMF-labs due to missing caching-layers.
And we must not forget that the translations of FAL differ slightly in content. There were complaints by German users; I poked one, since this seems to be a nice opportunity to sort this as well. -- Rillke(q?) 10:58, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Here the new links:
en: Free Art License 1.3
fr: Licence Art Libre 1.3
pt: Licença da Arte Livre 1.3
de: Lizenz Freie Kunst 1.1
it: Licenza Arte Libera
pl: Licencja Wolnej Sztuki 1.3
es: Licencia Arte Libre 1.2
can an admin include the new links in our Template:FAL please!?
And yes, that is right: for the german users and the contributors is "only" the FAL 1.1 version valide.
Thanks, --Alchemist-hp (talk) 17:24, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
