Countries without ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code

Since this is includes only countries with ISO 3166-1 codes, it doesn't have, for example, the individual countries of the UK, but you can use {{RegionAdjective}} instead. Rocket000 (talk) 01:55, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

Long notation

I added optional long notation so {{CountryAdjective|FR|f}} produces the same output as {{CountryAdjective|French|female}}. Added to allow more natural inputs into newly proposed fields of the Creator template. --Jarekt (talk) 05:15, 17 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks but it breaks {{NationAndOccupation}}. It is not difficult to fix but I don't know which is best:

1. move the page to {{RegionAdjective}} and change the code to afghan={{countryAdjective|AF}}
2. have a afghan|algerian=nowiki at {{RegionAdjective}}.

I think i would rather vote for 1 (I guess it implies going back to a single page system at {{RegionAdjective}})--Zolo (talk) 08:21, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

I don't like the "long notation" because it weakens the notion that this is about countries and not about nationalities. Basques, Bretons, Occitans etc. are citizens of the state "République française" that bears the country code FR, but they are not "French" by nationality. We should avoid anything that could lead to confusion about the template's purpose. --Slomox (talk) 14:46, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

On the other hand the code is not always used to refer to nationalities strictor sensu. The "DE" in creator:Albrecht Dürer cannot mean that Dürer is German in any legal sense. This kind of cases is very common for creators, so maybe it would make sense to place the long form at {{RegionAdjective}} and use it in creator, so that it makes it clear this has not necessarily legal implications.--Zolo (talk) 15:33, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

I just added English name as an alternative to the code. I am trying to parse a lot of creator descriptions from things like "Danish painter" to nationality and occupation fields and it takes forever to look up each nation I do not know, and most of them are not intuitive, like DK for "Danish". To speed up the process i created reverse lookup which can take English version and convert it into the code and used it in the template. I assume code FR is for french nationals and Basques should use {{RegionAdjective|basque}} or {{NationAndOccupation|m|basque|painter}} to get "Basque painter". Same with "Flemish", "Yugoslavian" or even "Korean". We could rename {{RegionAdjective}} as {{Nationality}} and make it handle inputs like "FR", "French" and "Basque". Than we can remove this functionality from {{CountryAdjective}}. --Jarekt (talk) 15:39, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

I created {{NationAndOccupation/testcases}}, {{RegionAdjective/sandbox}} and Template:NationAndOccupation/testcases where I think I fixed all the issues. {{RegionAdjective/sandbox}} should be probably called {{Nationality}}. Also in {{NationAndOccupation}} there seem to be mostly 2 patterns with the only translated word "and" since we have {{int:end}} I was able to combine all the language versions into a single {{NationAndOccupation/default}}. --Jarekt (talk) 04:29, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

I think it is good."Nationality" is probably a clearer name but I suppose the template could be used in contexts where it is not really a nationality (like "English teapot")--Zolo (talk) 07:51, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
