IP edits[edit]

IP user 74.12.165.207 has made a number of edits to this page after I reset the page to something similar to the 2023 page. Unfortunately, the IP has not given any edit summaries, so the reasons for their edits are not clear. I am reverting some of the edits, since they have been discussed before in similar settings, but I will use this talk page to explain my view also on other edits that I disagree with. My hope is to get the user to this talk page, so that we together can improve this page instead of fighting over it.

Names of states

I cannot see any reason to change the name of sovereign states from the commonly used names that also are used as titles of the linked articles. Those I have reverted, since this has been discussed ad nauseam all over Wiki. I see no reason to mark the flag of Cape Verde with the caption 'Cabo Verde' when the relevant article is called 'Cape Verde' (and of course mentions the official name). That is just counterintuitive. I have kept the parenthesis on East Timor and Ivory Coast, but frankly, this is not the place for such detail.

Headings

I frankly see no good reason for the addition of '... and unrecognized countries' to the 'Other states' title, but whatever... However, the heading 'Territories' (without 'Dependent') is just too vague and would be an invitation to add any kind of entity.

Unofficial flags

In my opinion, it would be better to mark the flags that have no official status as 'unofficial', and I would like to hear the arguments for removing that relevant info. TU-nor (talk) 18:25, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Structure[edit]

In an attempt to clean up the structure of this gallery, I have now come to the 'Territories' part. As a start, I will group them by country. In that process, I will remove some entries that clearly do not belong:

  • Argentine Antarctica does not have a flag. This is the flag of the province Tierra del Fuego, which is a regular province in mainland Argentine which just happens to administer the Argentine claim in Antarctica.
  • Brazilian Antarctica does not even exist. Brazil has no claim in Antarctica.
  • Chilean Antarctica does not have a flag. This is the flag of the province Magallanes, which is a regular province in mainland Chile which just happens to administer the Chilean claim in Antarctica.
  • Seborga is just a microstate. --TU-nor (talk) 10:06, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Chinland[edit]

I'd say we should add the flag of Chinland. Though the stated goal of Chinland isn't necessarily permanent independence, the State of Chinland effectively operates as an independent state, and unlike the Wa State it opposes the authority of the Military Junta. Therefore I believe it counts. WeaponizingArchitecture (talk) 14:46, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@WeaponizingArchitecture: Let us simplify this: 1) There are no sources given for your claim that Chinland effectively operates as an independent state. 2) There are no sources given for Chinland claiming sovereignty. (On the contrary, there are sources saying they have federation as their goal.) 3) And as for me leaving out When the tatmadaw's military rule is overthrown in my edit summary, that is because that is completely irrelevant to the status or the claimed status of Chinland today.
You will need to find reliable sources (see w:WP:RS) about sovereignty. If not, your addition is original research (see w:WP:OR) and/or synthesis (see w:WP:SYNTH). Please self revert until such sources are found, or you may be accused of fighting en edit war (see [[w:WP:EDITWAR). Regards! --TU-nor (talk) 15:11, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Addition: Studying the sources of the w:Chinland article in detail, I see that the constitution of Chinland actually claim sovereignty. That means that you will only need to find reliable sources stating that they in actual fact can and do exert such sovereignty. --TU-nor (talk) 15:29, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
