new set of icons

moved from User talk:Maxima m

Hi there, when changing icons in jp-WP, I mentioned you often used overlay to create samples. Now there are icons of any kind you may need, tunnel with water as , high level as File:BSicon hGRENZE.svg, same with water as . Just in case you may want to use them ;-) axpdeHello! 20:19, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Thank you axpde for introducing. Ich denke, GRENZE legende is for international boundary, and exGRENZE legende is for other boundaries such as regional (kantons, provinces, prefectures...) or operator administration (JR East and JR Central, SNCF and RATP...) No? In Japan no international boundary exists, thus I put separate explanation in the list in JA. Icon is known to few Japanese, or standing for international boundary (often with checkpost). Maxima m (talk) 09:19, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Of course there are erstwhile/minor border icons as well: tunnel with water , high level as File:BSicon exhGRENZE.svg, same with water as . You might want to use those as I mentioned several overlays of normal icons with . axpdeHello! 12:50, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Addition of pictograms

moved from en:Wikipedia talk:Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms/junctions

Can there be new pictograms of interchanges on flying junctions (TINTt, tTINT, uTINT etc)? This will be useful for interchanges of rapid transit. NoNews! 03:53, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

These days it's easier to create complex situations by superimposition of existing symbols. See Wikipedia:Route diagram template#Overlay. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:29, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Churning out icons

moved from Wikipedia:User talk:Useddenim

Thanks for doing this. Some of the offset icons are useful for taking that extra column off RDT's so they are no wider than they need to be. I could ask that you create some icons I have a use for, though. One is a triangle of track two icons to a side, which would make, for example, triangular stations easier to see than the single icon triangle but without the huge three icon spreads that are more useful at truly large triangle like the one north of Portsmouth in the UK. I could also use an icon to depict a station sited on one side of such a large triangle (eg Farlington on the Portsmouth triangle). I would think the you could do this either by allowing the station icon to be offset in both axes (both forward and to the left of the central position) or make a station up from four quarters the way some linking "wedges" between curves are done currently. Let me know what you think. Britmax (talk) 08:11, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Here's an illustration of what I mean: if each UWc icon was a quarter of a station icon you would be able to overlay and position stations on curves.

Britmax (talk) 08:34, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure that it would be a good idea to move stations that far so that they straddle the division line between rows. (See User talk:Axpde#New Icons for some discussion about that.) However, I can certainly create a set that go into the corners. Useddenim (talk) 12:29, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

That's great, thanks. If you look at en:West Coastway Line you will see that I have used one of the icons for Farlington, which now looks like a station on the railway rather than an eccentrically placed blob. More uses will occur when I get to places like Ambergate and Earlestown. Thanks again! Britmax (talk) 13:57, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Why didn't I realise the problem it would cause for text comments (names of stations, etc!) Rookie error, what!? Britmax (talk) 14:00, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

If I could please make another request it would be for "disused" versions of the parallel continuation arrows. I could really save some space with them. Britmax (talk) 11:38, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Diagonal interruptions

Hello Useddenim !

I've recently created the diagonal continuations BSicons. I have two different versions, with 6 dots or with 7 dots. Whitch of these two versions do you prefer ?

  •   (8024) and   (8031) ?
  • or (8124) and (8131) ?

Sincerely --Pic-Sou (talk) 09:15, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Compared to   (LUECKE) I'd prefer the latter ones! a×pdeHello! 09:24, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
OK. What do you think about renaming them to   (LSTR2+4) and   (LSTR3+1) ? Or   (LUECKE2+4) and   (LUECKE3+1) ? I don't really like the distinction between LUECKE and LSTR roots... --Pic-Sou (talk) 09:51, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
I also prefer the 6 dots version. This page shows 8 variants of LUECKE, but 28 files of LROOT, so I think {LSTR) is the way to go. Useddenim (talk) 13:34, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

London Underground Icons Step Free Access from Trains

moved from en:Wikipedia talk:Route diagram template/Catalog of pictograms

Have noticed over the past few weeks new route maps on the Northern Line trains. They are no differentiating between step free access from platform to street and train to street. The latter has swapped colours - i.e. white background with blue wheelchair symbol and blue border. At interchange stations there can be a multitude of symbols for no step free access / platform step free access / train step free access (Kings Cross is an example of this). It may be worth considering icons for this differentiation. --Stewart (talk | edits) 11:10, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure that a white-on-blue version would be distinguishable at a small size from the existing ACCessible INTerchange: compare   (utACC) vs   (utINTACC). Useddenim (talk) 13:58, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
A couple more thoughts, on further reflection:
1.   (utINTACC) with a blue border (File:BSicon uDST legende.svg) would indicate an accessible depôt; I can't think of any beyond Acton and a few other museums converted from former shops.
2. That level of information more properly belongs in a station's article, as anyone needing that information should already have a Step-free Tube Guide, rather than relying on Wikipedia. Useddenim (talk) 14:21, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Useddenim for your response. I was surprised to see the maps on the Northern line trains change, have not noticed them on other lines (yet!). I agree with you respect to needing that info. I have been surprised of late how many people turn to Wikipedia for information rather than the source data and this information should be correct in the station article. The Step-free Tube Guide can also be misleading. Take London Bridge Northern Line as an example. The platforms have Harrington humps, but nowhere have I seen any information about where they are located along the length of a train - and northbound, it coincides with the point were everyone enters the platform and stands. (Yes I know this became a bit of a ramble) --Stewart (talk) 14:39, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

The point is that line templates are a simplified schematic, not a comprehensive map or guide. For what you seem to want to do, you want something like the Japanese use of the icons to represent individual station layouts. Circeus (talk) 14:43, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Mixed crossovers

Any chance of adding to #Crossovers things like   (uemvÜWBl)? And if so, how can I help? --Tuvalkin (talk) 18:18, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Umm… a good place to start would be with keeping the e and x prefixes the right way 'round… (Compare your original upload with   (evÜWBl)).
Also, as a design note, it's not necessary to add an ultra-wide line (which should be colour  #f9f9f9 , not  white ) behind the upper route; I just use a closed path behind the second and third points of the two bridge sides. Useddenim (talk) 14:11, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Danish S Bahn

I'd like to create several icons for the Danish S-Bahn service, using , where   (SBHF) will be named something like SBHFdk and placing them in the subcategory Denmark of the Category:Icons for railway descriptions/suburban commuter service. Your thoughts on this? Wiebevl (talk) 06:49, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Or to keep matters simple, I could use the overlay functionality. Wiebevl (talk) 06:52, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Vertical half icons?

moved from User talk:Axpde/Archive 3#New Icons

Hello, I have uploaded a couple of icons,   (DSTa) and   (BRÜCKEa+DSTe). The purpose of the icons are that the non-stop station is between a normal track and a elevated one. I think the name for the first is ok, but I'm not sure about the other, too complex. Maybe hDSTe could be another option for the name.

I have the rest of the icons ready to upload, but I'd like to see if there's something to correct.

Thank you :)

--Danlx86 (talk) 17:37, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

What is the sense of placing a symbol on the border between two table rows? Placing an appropriate comment in a text column will be next to impossible. Regards, BjørnN (talk) 17:50, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
You could have used something like BSicon   (hHSTe). I think that makes life easier. Wiebevl (talk) 18:03, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
I think   (DST) and   (BRÜCKE) like I have now is more correct to a certain point :p. Actually it's worse than expected. The DST should start normal, then all the bridge length, normal again and ends inside a tunnel, if I read correctly... Thanks for your help, regards, --Danlx86 (talk) 18:41, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Have to agree to BjørnN, the main task of the row-by-row BS-templates is to have a designated place for text comments of each facility shown in the route diagramm. Splitting those icons does not make any sense! Plus complexity – same in naming – grows to infinity :( axpdeHello! 20:14, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Ok, that's why I only uploaded those two, to see if they were useful and correct. I learned how to made icons though :D. I have to ask, however, ¿did I correctly the procedure to upload the icons? Upload and the post in discussion here or better in the page where they were uploaded? I found there is not heavy set for tKRZto and tKRZtu, nor light both lines in use. Again, thank you for your help, regards, --Danlx86 (talk) 07:59, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
The upload itself is ok. If not sure, add Category:Icons for railway descriptions/experimental and {{PD-ineligible}} or {{PD-geometry}}. Maybe we should install a central place for talks about BSicons ... axpdeHello! 09:24, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
A central talk forum for BSicons? Absolutely!  Useddenim (talk) 10:12, 7 April 2011 (UTC) ✓ Done

Up/down half of BST are needed in diagrams with quite a big number of non-passenger stops, for example like in Moscow Railway. Example of templates are Link1 Link2 Link3 Link4 . In Link1 in Бекасово (bekasovo) huge station there are many stops (but it seems I managed in Bekasovo there to use only BSTl/BSTr); but in other places in schemes BSTf/BSTg is used (make search in these links). Separate cell (simple KBST/BST) would make the whole diagram wider/longer just because of one such stop (which is inappropriate) while diagram is long/wide by itself already. Having thought of introducing such thing about 2 months, I did not know a better solution. Of course, in some places in my links you can point out, that I can change to simple BST w/o making longer/wider, it will just look a bit uglier (wrong place connecting to neigborhood), but in some places it is not possible. In future schemes (that are in progress) such thing will also be needed.

Sometimes there are so many such 'stops', that it is not necessary to have a text name for them all (to the comment, that you cannot have a text for splitted BST):

  • It is physically impossible to have text for all, where there are many of them (see my example). So, it is not needed (just passenger and main/big non-passenger stations are named)
  • Name of stop is not known (or known, but w/o authorized source like WP requires).
  • HotLink on cell sometimes is enough w/o text. (or on both cells if splitted).
  • Text is possible with POINTER mark, that will be in concrete row. There are many POINTERs to point to correct side.

With this, having a definition of 'correctness' that names BSTf/BSTg (BSTf_legende/BSTg_legende) incorrect is just useless (does not mean anything), because BSTf/BSTg will be used similar (with similar rights to exist) to BSTl/BSTr/BST* in templates with described necessity. If name is inappropriate by some reason - you are free to change it (and in all places where it is used) (I tried to select a name similar to all existing conventions). Of course, you can delete the BSTf/BSTg from 'table' of ALL icons, but that will not be constructive/reasonable - let other people use it. 192.198.151.37 08:12, 6 November 2012 (UTC) MUR (talk) 13:32, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Ventilation shafts

Ventilation shaft on tunnel light rail track stretch.

I am making detailed diagrams of the Lisbon Subway and found a few instances of ventilation shafts as features of track tunnels — like in this presentation (and a few others hosted in what Wm thinks are spam sites, such as the SkyscraperCity forum). I thus created this new icon   (utVNT), with a new ID, VNT, meant for naming usage akin to HST or ENDE. Of course it only makes sense for tunnel track, I think. Grade-separated crossover with through line

I created   (vÜWBol+l), but am not sure that I gave it the best name (based on   (vÜWBl) – which I'm not sure has the best name to begin with: shouldn't it be named   (vÜWBol)?). Useddenim (talk) 18:15, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

I agree. It's one of many instance where people could not predict how more complex the system would get (the -o being redundant because the alternate name is -ur, which does not have "priority" in being specified in the name).   (vÜWBr)/  (vÜWBl) should probably have -o redirects created for consistency's sake. I think the name is as straightforward as we can get it, assuming that vÜWBol+r is the same with the bypass on the opposite side. Circeus (talk) 01:39, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

3 and 4 ÜW corners

I made all blue/red / used/disused combinations, no tunnels (nor elevated, cut, embanked) for now. They are presented here and here. These allow for less overlay levels. -- Tuválkin 09:50, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

New York City Subway icons

Not the best. It would be better to have legende versions of the bullets that can then be used as overlays. Useddenim (talk) 22:47, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
What is done for other system’s R.D.T.s, in several wikipedias, is to keep a generic icon, like   (uBHF), in the diagram, or one specific to the network/company in question (either whole, such as   (SBHF), or overlaid, such as   (GBHF legende)), and add specific line indicators in the text — either as simple text, styled text, or bullet-like images.
If icons for numbered lines are going to be created, however, I urge the creator to
  • Keep the names generic — thus not BHF_NYMTA2 but BHF_num2, f.i.
  • Create only overlay bullet-only versions of the icons, to be added on regular station icons, and name them FOO_legende.
  • Keep colors within sensible variation range — e.g. if a NY subway line uses RGB#445566 and we already have a set of icons using RGB#405060, use it, don’t make a new set.
-- Tuválkin 23:20, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
What about simply creating a series of redirects that follow the BSicon syntax, as in this example:   (LOGO NYC-S) from File:NYCS-bull-trans-S.svg? Useddenim (talk) 23:50, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
There’s elegance and practicality in that suggestion, yes. -- Tuválkin 01:40, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Indeed. May I even suggest  (LOGO NYC-1uBHF) ? That way there’s even a(n obscured, but present) "BHF" in the underlying code, should the logo be(come) unparsable. (Also BSicons in PNG?! Clap, clap — said the Chinese wiseman, with a pinch of sarcasm.) -- Tuválkin 19:14, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

uCPICr

Hello,
I don't found an opposite of   (uCPICl) (uCPICr). Can anybody make such this icon?
Thanks , Bob l´éponge (talk) 15:23, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

(uCPICr) has existed since 5 September 2007. Which catalog are you using to look for icons? Useddenim (talk) 19:11, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Oh, every time, I don't see it. (I looked in
en:Category:Icons for railway descriptions/set blue/CPIC
Thanks for the information
--Bob l´éponge (talk) 13:18, 15 June 2012 (UTC)
I think it's better to check the Catalog of pictograms (shortcut: en:WP:RDT/C) instead of the categories, because the icons are grouped by type and linked between pages. Useddenim (talk) 18:40, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Can someone make a opposite of   (uhKDSTe) (uhKDSTa)?

light rail/metro icons request

I'm looking to get the "um" version of   (mABZrf) and the same superimposed on to an elevated line. Lost on Belmont (talk) 00:55, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

✓ Done:   (umABZrf). -- Tuválkin 18:57, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! Although its interesting... I could have sworn that when I posted   (mABZrf), the joining (blue) line didn't overtake the main (red). All the others in the series seem to show that the joining line "ends" and becomes the main. In this instance I need the top of the   (umABZrf) to be blue (as the metro line continues). As you can see here, what I've got is a bit off because of this. Combining that with   (uhABZrf) would be perfect. Thanks. Lost on Belmont (talk) 01:07, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
The guardians of BSicon-dom over at de:Wikipedia have decreed that heavy rail shall always be superior to metro/light rail. Useddenim (talk) 23:42, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Ah... I guess that explains that bizarre inconsistency I feel every time I ride the rails downtown. Guess I'll have to rewrite 105 years of Chicago history! So glad they cleared that up for me. But seriously, as a token-carrying member of the Trolley Mafia, I'm really getting sick of this "real train" bullshit. Thanks for looking/trying, though. Looks like they need to take a closer look at   (mABZrf) then. Lost on Belmont (talk) 00:29, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Lost, the matter is both simpler and more complex than just tram/train rivalry. In practice, you can achieve the look you need with superimposition of  (uSTRhABZrf) . You are right that, given the convention,   (mABZrf) should be altered (jsut did). -- Tuválkin 13:42, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
I'd seen that superimposition was possible, but wasn't sure how to go about it. Thanks! Lost on Belmont (talk) 16:05, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Also looking to get   (uxpBHF) on an elevated line   (uhSTR). Lost on Belmont (talk) 00:55, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

It already existed:   (uphBHF). -- Tuválkin 18:57, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Back again. This time I need   (uhABZqlxr) (or even just   (uABZqlxr) so I can overlay) and   (uhABZdf). The best I could come up with for the latter was File:BSicon uABZdf.svg (uABZdfhKRZh)  (and, as you can see, it sucks.) Lost on Belmont (talk) 20:15, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! But I see that I made a little boo boo with the first icon. What I really need is the uh version of   (xABZqlxr). Lost on Belmont (talk) 01:37, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Hydroelectricity

To mark a hydroelectric plant (in BSicon waterways), I have (ab)used   (ELC legende). Any better idea? Should it be a full icon, or an overlay? -DePiep (talk) 19:48, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Maybe File:BSicon uDST legende.svg (ELC legendeuDST legende)  is less of an abuse and more clearly indicates that this is an actual landmark, not just an icon? -- Tuválkin 02:21, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, used it as a landmark indeed. Could be an inline (overlay of a water STR) elsewhere. There is no grand page where we can note these incitentals I understand. -DePiep (talk) 13:27, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
For future reference, try this: en:Wikipedia:Route_diagram_template/Catalog_of_pictograms/others. -- Tuválkin 14:54, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
Really, I gave up contributing to or even understanding the big thing in BSicon. Glad I did   (uPANAMACANAL-BASINSr). -DePiep (talk) 00:56, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
OK, I got it (cynically): "u" is navigable water (from "undergroud" metro), sorry to take it for actual "water". And "r" is "righthand" because, eh, it is on my right hand going downwards (only one direction always). Sure. Code everything always. -DePiep (talk) 01:03, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

ex version of dSTR-L

There is no ex version of the halfwidth left half of a STR. A halfwidth right half of it exists   (exdSTR-R). Here is the normal version of dSTR-L for reference   (dSTR-L). crossing of 2 tunnels

Hi, for wikipedia:de:Schnellfahrstrecke Nürnberg–Erfurt, the "Tunnel Füllbach" is crossing under the "Tunnel Höhnberg" inside the mountain. So I need new versions of   (exÜWBo+l) and   (exÜWBor), where the upper line is dotted (inside tunnel). thanks! --Andre de (talk) 23:54, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

You surely mean both as tunnel dotted lines, yes? Like   (utKRWl+l) but with a “bridge” marking, right? -- Tuválkin 03:59, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Like this   (utÜWBo+l) or   (extKRWl+lo), right? -- Tuválkin 05:02, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
The   (extKRWl+lo) is nearly right, but the lower tunnel should not be dotted on left from the portal. only the upper line should be dotted, and I would add its portals in additional BS-rows with existing symbols, see following example. --Andre de (talk) 09:02, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
uSTR utSTRa exSTR exSTR
(blue: Höhnberg start)
utSTRa utSTR exSTR extSTRa
Tunnel Höhnberg (existing symbols) (blue: Füllbach start)
utKRWl+lo utKRWro+r exKRWl+tlo exKRWtro+r
Tunnel Füllbach (neededadded symbols) (blue: Höhnberg×Füllbach, underground)
utSTR utSTRe extSTRe exSTR
(existing symbols) (blue: Füllbach end)
utSTRe uSTR exSTR exSTR
(blue: Höhnberg end)

New icons added, and blue layout suggested. -- Tuválkin 15:06, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

✓ Done, see the bigger images at right. However, unless Füllbach tunnel is a really short one (like this), I think it would be better to illustrate this in the diagram using the layout I added above in blue. -- Tuválkin 15:06, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Thank you very much! I implemented the red symbols in the article wikipedia:de:Schnellfahrstrecke Nürnberg–Erfurt. The blue version has 2 disadvantages: In reality there are no portals inside the mountain, of cause. And the blue version needs 5 rows for 2 tunnels, the red version needs only 3 rows. --Andre de (talk) 17:32, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
(Portal marks in icons such as   (tKRZto) and   (tKRZtu), as opposed to   (tKRZt), don’t necessarily mean actual underground portals. They are just an indication which tunnel was dug deeper below the other — see this and, again, this. -- Tuválkin 01:58, 17 January 2013 (UTC))
Can I suggest the following change?
exWBRÜCKE1 exhKRZWe
Füllbachbrücke (90 m)
extSTRa
Tunnel Füllbach (1113 m)
extKRWl+lo extKRWro+r
17,182 Tunnel Höhnberg (824 m)
extSTRe
exBS2l exBS2r
16,258 Niederfüllbach (Abzw)
Which shows the shorter de:Tunnel Höhnberg as, well, shorter and uses no additional rows. Useddenim (talk) 23:47, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your suggestion. But in your example, I have problems to identify, which tunnel description belongs to which tunnel. The portals are in different height, but both belong to the row "Tunnel Füllbach". I think, track symbols dont necessarily describe the length of a building, so I would keep the actual version in the article. Thank you very much for creating the symbols! --Andre de (talk) 12:33, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

PNGs inside SVGs

here's my input:   (CPICma blue) [renamed]   (KBHFa blue) [renamed]   (exCPICma azure) [renamed]   (exCPICm azure) [renamed] --γ=2πrt2 21:21, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

I already told him that bundling a bunch of pixels in an SVG wrap doesnt make the cut. Told him to use a text editor, too, yet somehow I don’t think this Base64 data was typed in by hand from calculations on graph paper. (I’d bet it is done by opening an SVG isn MSPaint, some paint bucket action, and then save as SVG again. With these results.) Still, even rasters of BSicons could be easily kept at 500×500 px, right? So, what do we have here? k-12 wikipedia? -- Tuválkin 03:07, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh — not MSPaint but http://www.imagebot.com/. Accessed via tablet, I’d guess. -- Tuválkin 03:09, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
These four now remade as proper BSicons; I’ll go get the rest. I should say I'm surprised that, in view of the quality of the original submissions, there was astuteness enough to grok how to use the bsq template. There’s hope… 03:37, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
