Nederlands: Oude kerkDe Oude Kerk (ca. 1305) is het oudste nog bestaande gebouw van Amsterdam. Tot de Alteratie (1578), waarin het rooms-katholieke stadsbestuur werd afgezet, was de kerk gewijd aan de heilige Sint Nicolaas. Deze heilige geldt als de beschermheilige van Amsterdam. Het oudste kerkje op deze plaats, van omstreeks 1300, is in twee eeuwen uitgegroeid tot een hallenkerk met drie beuken (ruimte tussen twee rijen pilaren) en een groot priesterkoor. Groter en hoger was het devies. Rondom ontstonden kapellen, ieder met een eigen altaar, in gebruik bij verschillende ambachtsgilden. De Oude Kerk was doordeweeks ook een ontmoetingsplaats. Voordat de beurs van Hendrik de Keyser aan het Rokin in 1611 beschikbaar kwam, werd de Oude Kerk zelfs een tijd lang gebruikt door beurshandelaren. In de kerk liggen bekende Amsterdammers begraven onder wie de zeeheld Isaäc Sweers, de componist Jan Pietersz. Sweelinck, de stadshistorici Isaac Commelin en Tobias van Domselaer, de architect Justus Vingboons, de dichter Roemer Visscher, de schilder Jan van der Heyden en Saskia, de vrouw van Rembrandt.
