Description
English: Lieutenant George Lawrence (ca.1730-1808)

A half-length portrait, very slightly to the right, showing Lawrence in a brown coat and white stock, wearing a grey wig.

George Lawrence was secretary to Admiral John Byng during his Mediterranean campaign and he appeared as a witness for the defence at his court martial. He was on the quarterdeck of the ‘Monarch’, 74 guns, when Byng was executed. The admiral gave his watch to Lawrence as a remembrance. He subsequently held shore posts in various dockyards, spending the last 30 years of his life living and working in Deal, Kent.
