Longquan ware porcelain vase with carved decoration and celadon glazeYuan dynasty, 14th centuryLongquan kilns continued to make porcelain through the Song, Yuan, Ming and early Qing dynasties. After the Song dynasty such wares were no longer made for court, but instead for a huge domestic and export market. This vase was one of a pair, made to stand on the altar of a Buddhist temple. Its animated carved decoration reflects its use. Around its neck is a triangular diaper; on the shoulder a band of curved shapes making a design known as ruyi meaning ”may everything be as you wish”; round the body scrolling lotus flowers, the flower of Buddhism; and above the foot a rising band of lotus petals. A famous vase of similar style in the Percival David Collection at the British Museum has an inscription recording its dedication to a Buddhist temple, and the date 1327. |
