Description
Svenska: FIGUR.
English: The Three Star Gods of Longevity, High Rank and Happiness, porcelain decorated in overglaze enamelsQing dynasty, c.1900The Three Daoist Star Gods were deities linked by astrologers to planets and stars in the sky. Popular in temples and households, they may still be seen in Chinese shops and restaurants today. The central figure of Shou Xing, deity of long life, has an enlarged cranium denoting wisdom. An old man, he holds a staff in one hand the one of the Peaches of Immortality in the other. Lu Xing, deity of High Rank, holds a ruyi (wish-fulfilling) sceptre in one hand and wears the cap and robes of an official. Fu Xing, deity of Happiness, carries a small boy in his hands. Fu Xing and Lu Xing both have real hair inserted into holes in their faces to form luxuriant beards, moustaches and whiskers. The triad were bought at Bukowskis in 1910, and the pieces were probably made not long before that date.
