Description |
English: Indigenous houses built on stilts over the water at Zamboanga, Mindanao A view across the water to the indigenous houses built on stilts in the water just off the beach at Zamboanga, Mindanao Islands, Philippines. In the forground is a local boat with outriggers. From its size, it could be the 'sahpit', used for the tranport of cargoes. Other outriggers are secured to the stilts in the background. HMS Challenger (1858), on her scientific circumnavigation, visited the same area twice: once in October 1874 and again in January/February 1875. However, the photographs next in the sequence for both albums relate to Manila, which was visited straight after in October 1874. The same print features in album ALB0859. The captions in the albums are different, indicating different places. However, it is the former that is correct:
ALB0175/98 - "Moro or Indian Huts built in the water, Zamboanga, Mindanas"
ALB0859/33 - "View at Dobbo [Dubo] Aru Islands", which are in the Moluccas. |
