From a Minnesota photo album (see below) a high-res scan of an original carte de visite (cdv) of the grave of Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861) the famous Illinois politician of the "Lincoln - Douglas debates" that brought Abraham Lincoln to the public's attention. The cdv was published in the 1860's and is now in the public domain; the reverse is blank with no back-stamp. Douglas, defeated by Lincoln in the election of 1860, died shortly after the start of the Civil War of typhoid fever on June 3, 1861. According to Wikipedia, Douglas read over Lincoln's proclamation calling for 75,000 troops after the bombing of Fort Sumter: "Douglas looked over the proclamation before it was issued and endorsed it completely. He suggested only one change: Lincoln should call for 200,000 troops, not just 75,000. "You do not know the dishonest purposes of those men as well as I do," he said." Douglas has quite a different looking grave site today: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_A._Douglas_Tomb#/media/File... A Minnesota Photo Album: My friend Mike was browsing the "bargain-mart" community store at a senior living/retirement village where he found an antique photo album, containing 100 original Civil War era cdv's, a large portion of which bear back-stamps from Minnesota photo publishers. Mike was able to purchase the entire album for only $60. |
