Description

B Company, 44 Battalion, Australian Imperial Force

Corporal W G H Bawden enlisted in Perth, Western Australia, on 7 January 1916 at the age of 18.

After sailing from Freemantle on board HMAT Suevic in June 1916, Cpl Bawden served on the Western Front.

He was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Croix de Guerre for continued gallantry in the front line during January to March 1917.

On 8 March 1917, Cpl Bawden was severely wounded in the face while evacuating wounded civilian workers from a factory in Armentières under shell fire.

His injuries resulted in the loss of his sight and required plastic surgery to reconstruct his face.

Cpl Bawden was discharged from service on 19 February 1918. He is shown after being invested with the Croix de Guerre.
