eath breaks before serv-ice is affected. Briefly, the work which has been done to date inplacing toll cables under permanent pressure, includessealing the cable at both ends and at all lateral tapswith beeswax plugs, installed without interruptingservice. In addition to plugging the cable at the endsand at lateral taps, intermediate plugs are installed atapproximately 10-mile intervals, in order to sectionalizethe cable for use in locating sheath breaks. Tire valvesare soldered into the sheath at approximately one-mileintervals. Gas is introduced at approximately 40pounds pressure at each valve in the section. Whenequalized throughout the section the pressure is between15 and 20 pounds. The cable is also equipped withalarm gauges which automatically indicate in adjacenttest rooms any lowering of the pressure in any sectionof the cable. Drying out with Gas Another important advantage of the nitrogen gasin maintenance work is the drying property of the gas (121) Bell Telephone Quarterly
Text Appearing After Image:
(122) Long Toll CaUe Construction and Maintencmce admitted on either side of a cable which is wet. Inseveral instances, we have avoided pulling in and cut-ting over a new section of cable. In many other in-stances we have practically restored complete telephoneservice within three or four hours after a failure. Inthese latter cases, the gas was applied and the dryingout process continued up to the time when the ductwas rodded, the new cable pulled in and the splicerswere ready to cut over. The drying out process notonly restored practically all of the telephone service, but materially aided the splicers in toning through thedefective section when cutting over. We are reason-ably certain that only those cases where the cable isslightly wet can be dried out completely with gas.Cases where the cable is thoroughly saturated withwater must be handled in the usual manner—either re-placing the section or cutting in a short piece of cable. The gas, however, is helpful in all cases in partiall
