| Description | Built in 1924, this Art Deco-style building was constructed to house Baron’s Department Store. The building features a sandstone facade with a modified first floor shopfront, featuring large storefronts and doors surrounded by metal panels at the ends, with the intact second and third floors featuring decorative Art Deco fluted pilasters with ziggurat motifs, second and third story windows with decorative aluminum recessed spandrel panels and geometric trim above, and a parapet enclosing the building’s low-slope roof. The building today houses a restaurant on the ground floor, with offices on the upper floors, and is one of the few remaining fully intact former department store buildings in Downtown Madison. |
